Dear Slr:
Inclosed horcwlth please 11ml iv
check for $11,00 nB payment for ono
year's subscription to tho Seml
Weokly Tribune.
It is rather hard to cot auy nows
from tho States in theso parts, so it is
through your thriving paper that I
win try to keep In touch with tho nco-
plo at homo.
1 havo been hero In Mexico for n
lttlo hotter than four months, nnd Uko
It pretty woll. I am employed at tho
Matn Rcdonda Terminal of tho Trans
continental Oil Co., (Standard Oil), as
an offlco clerk, nnd havo boon acting
Cnmp Boss for nomo three months,
this work being In conjunction with
my offlco work. I had u rollef from
New York last month, but. ho did not
soom to get along with tho Chinamen
In tho hotel, so nftcr n fow had quit
their Jobs ho wns llred and of course
tho Job fell hack Into my hands, and
bids woll to stay for some tlmo ns
they havo mado no effort to sccuro
another relief.
Tho Matn Rcdonda Terminal like
sovoral others close by, resembles a
smnll railroad shop town, with their
shops nnd offlco buildings and brick
collages. Tho tormlnnl is situated
on tho bench, and loads oil tankers
through plpp lines running nhout a
mllo out In tho Gulf. Wo aro ablo to
load twcnty-flvo to thirty ships a
month, or about 2,000,000 barrels of
oil, and oxpoct to bo ablo to load on
an avorago of 4,000,000 barrels within
tho coming year.
Tho o11b aro situated In tho foot
hills somo 3G kilometers dlstanco nnd
tho oil is pumped through linos to
tanks nt this terminal. Thoro aro
numerous oil fields from which oil Is
taken in this part of tho country. Tho
big fields being, Zncamlxtllo, Amat
lan, Chinnmpa, Los Naranjos and tho
Topclato near Toxpam. All North
cm Mexico Is In tho midst of n groat
oil development. Extending from tho
Tempetato district to Los Naranjos
district is n broad oil bolt forty-flvo
miles In length nnd all along that bolt
thero Is dovolopmont on a lnrgo scale.
Mexico, howovor, Is not a small
man's field. It requires large capital
to develop oil properties horo and for
that reason only big companies like
tho Texas, Atlantic Refining, Stand
ard Oil, Gulf Rofining nnd Agulla can
afford to enter tho field. Wolls In Mex
ico run down about 2.200, nnd It costs
nny whoro from $50,000 to $70,000 to
put down n woll. So vou can readily
seo (hat tho man with smnll capital
hat no chance nt all.
Natlvo labor Is Inexpensive, costing
Hiont, A pesos ($2.00) a day. Export
drillers nnd other exporlneced lnbor
got much hlnhcr urines, of course.
Sneaking of Mexico's future iib an
o'l nrclncor it Is unfe to say that tho
dovolopmont to dato has scarcely
more than touched tho odgo of tho
(possibilities Tho country Is the
world's oil storohouso for tho future
Geologists aro divided ns to whether
iMoxIcan oil occurs In "crovlscs" or
"pools," but thero can ho no doubt as
to tho vnHtncss of tho Hupply nnd the
fn.ct that tho territory Is hardly more
than scratched.
At present Moxlco Is witnessing a
big lnllux of Amorlcnn lubor. Tani
plco is tho hendqunrtoi'B of all tho
companies In northern Mexico. A
