NATION'S DEBT TO' PILGRIMS
Their Famous Compact of Government
Rightly Treasured as a Great
State Document
In tho harbor at the tip of Cape
Cod occurred the first birth nnd the
first denth among the Pilgrims In
America. On board tho Mayflower, as
she lny nt anchor, wns born Pere
grine, son of William and Susannn
White. Hero wns another child for
the ship's nursery, ulready occupied by
little Oceanus Hopkins, who flrst saw
tho light of day far out nt sen.
The death wns that of Dorothy May,
wlfo of William Bradford, future gov
ernor of Plymouth colony. She was
drowned.
First of Importance, however, of
all that occurred here, and also In
the sequence of events, was the draw
ing up and signing of tho famous com
pact of government, originally desig
nated by Bradford In his history as "a
combination," And so it wus, In the
most literal sense, A combination.
This agreement, made In writing by
a little group of Englishmen who had
been dismissed by their mother coun
try as "good riddance to bad rubbish,"
la now trensurcd by tho nation in
Amerlcn, to which thoy contributed as
much as one of three great documents.
The other two nro the Declaration of
Independence and the Constitution of
tho United States.
Begone Dull Facts.
Two friendly little neighbors, aged
respectively and 0 years, recently
seated themselves on tho curbstone
near my windows for n religious dis
cussion. It seemed they had over
heard some grown-ups repcutlng n
recent prophecy of n certnln sect ns to
tho Imminent end of the world and
were greatly exorcised at tho report
The elder child, n fnlr-hnlred skeptic
from n northern stnte, scornfully de
clared thnt ho didn't believe tho story;
but the swnrthy, dark-eyed little Texan
solemnly asserted: "Yes, It's true; I
know it's true; fob this mo'nln I
read It In mah Bible." The midget
doesn't know one letter of the ulplin
bet from nnother, but he refuses to be
pinned down to vulgnr facts when his
spirit wishes to soar. Aro children
of the period brighter than their pred
ecessors? At his ngo I nm sure I
could not have flbbed with so solemn
and convincing nn nlr. Los Angeles
