There are various estimates on milk production costs and they nro likely to ho different under different circum stances. Moreover there Is consider nhlo variation In milk quality, nlso, as It ranges from barely three per cent butterfat test to nearly Ave per cent. However, none of the figures available show that the producer of milk Is "profiteering." In Illinois the state experiment sta tlon secured accurate figures on milk production costs from GSO dnlry farms with a total of 18,002 cows. Those fig ures showed the cost of nil Items en tering into the production of 100 pounds of mlllc ns follows : Grain, 44 pounds at $55 per ton.. 51.21 Silage, 1S8 pounds nt $0 per ton. . .50 liny, 50 pounds at $30 per ton 75 Other roughage, 30 pounds, nt $10 per ton 10 Labor, 2 hours at 30 cents net hours 7fi Totnl cost per 100 pounds $3.40 The cost is 3.40 cents per pound, or, taking 2.15 pounds per quart, 7.44 cents per quart. EYE TEST FOR TUBERCULOSIS Used as Check Upon Older Methods, as It Happens Occasionally Re actors Escape. The cyo test for detecting tubercu losis' In cattle has the approval of the scientists of the bureau of animal In dustry, United States Department of Agriculture. The ophthalmic or eye test Is used as. a check upon the older methods, as It happens occasionally that an animal that will not react to the subcutaneous Injection or Intra dermal test will react to the eye test. Two tuberculin tablets are placed In the conjunctival sac beneath the lower lid of the left eye and observations are taken at approximately Uie third hour Eye Teat for Tuberculosis Mas Its Best Use on Dairy Farm, Where Conditions Are Best Suited. following and at frequent Intervals up to 24 hours. Reaction to the test Is In dicated by discharge nnd swelling. The bureau of animal Industry Is not prepared to accept the evidence of the eye test alone where cattle are Intend ed for Interstate shipment. The test, however, furnishes an additional safe guard when used with the older method. The eye test Is not well adapted for use upon range cnttle or cattle In transit, because of the possibility for dust setting up an irrltntlon not rehit ed to tuberculosis. It has Its best use on the dairy farm, where conditions are such ns to give sure results. The experts have observed that In herds which are frequently tested by the subcutaneous method It Is advis able to apply the Intradermal and the eye test. The combined test sometimes detect reactors which have escaped detection by other means. CRUSHED GRAIN IS FAVORED Any Aid Given Cow In Digestion of Food Will Show In Increased Flow of Milk. There Is no animal harder worked than the dairy cow giving a large How of milk, and any aid given her In di gestion will show decided increase In mill; and In her condition. Some grains nro ensy of mastication nnd dl gestlon, but the usual rntion of the corn belt Is comprised mainly of wheat. corn. oats, rye and barley. All of these grnlns will show up In the feces If fed whole and unless the cattle are followed by hogs It Is entirely lost. Crushing grain Is better tbnn grind ing It line, for the digestibility may be decreased duo to failure to mix prop eiiy with tho saliva. IJownro of dairy feeds too finely ground, for they mny contnln filler and cannot be properly digested. BEETS ARE EXCELLENT FEED Because of Labor in Harvesting and Cost of Handling Are Not as Cheap as Silage. Sugar beets are an excellent feed for dairy cows, but because of the labor In harvesting and the expense of handling, are not as economical as corn silage. They have a larger nmount of nutriment than inangels or rutabagas, but It Is generally held that the latter will yield somewhat more per acre and are less dllllcult to handle. Sugar beets are not hard on the kidneys, but If fed In too largo quantities there Is a tendency to scorr the animals. This Is due to tho high sugar content of tho beet. r Improved Roads MMENSE SUM FOR HIGHWAYS During Year 1919 Over $400,000,000 Was Expended for Rural High ways and Bridges. During tho cnlendar year 1010, 40 states of the Union expended over $400,000,000 on their rural roads and bridges, the bureau of public roads of the United States Department of Agri culture recently announced. This to tal Is made up of tho actual cash ex penditures for such Items as labor. materials, supervision and administra tion, amounting to $3S0,455,031, and convict labor and statute labor, tho value of which, not definitely knotvo, Is estimated at about $132,000,000. So far as possible, all expenditures 'on city streets within Incorporated towns Building an Up-to-Date Highway. nnd cities and nil Items of sinking-fund payments or the redemption nnd Inter est payments on road and bridge bonus have been excluded. The road and brldgo expenditures for 1010 show an Incmise of approxi mately 33 1-3 per cent over those of 1018 nnd 70 per cent over those of 1014. More striking, however, Is the Increase In the proportion of the total funds supervised by the severnl state highway departments. In 1018 the ex penditures by or under the supervision of the state highway departments amounted to $117,285,203, while the local road funds, over which they exer cised no control whatever, amounted to $108,812,025. In 1010, however, the stnte highway departments supervised the expenditure of $200,202,004 as against the total of $180,103,237 ex pended by tho local road and bridge authorities. REMOVING SNOW FROM ROADS Becoming Increasingly Important Be cause of Large Amount of Travel During Winter. Snow ramovrii from hlghwnys Is be coming Increasingly Important bo cause of the lnrge amount of travel by motortrucks and automobiles. Sev eral states, have made appropriations for removal of snow from the main highways but In other states thoro hits been no appropriation of funds for this purpose. Vnst quantities of com modities must be hauled over the high ways next winter because of the lack of sulllclent railway cars to move them, nnd stnte money, rather than local funds' ought to be used to keep truck highways open. IMPROVED ROADS WOULD AID Many Counties Rich In Agricultural Possibilities Are Burdened With Poor Roads. Fluctuations In market prices mny have severnl explanations. They fre quently take place In regions where the locnl production does not equal the nnnual consumption. There are counties rich in agricultural possibil ities, burdened with bad roads, where the animal Incoming shipments of foodstuffs exceed the outgoing ship ments In the ratio of four to one. Many such counties with Improved roads could not only become self-supporting, but could ship products to other markets. TREES DO NOT INJURE ROADS Instead of Taking All Out It Would Be Better to Thin Out to 50 or 75 Feet. Why cut down nil trees nlong tho highway being graded? We recently saw two or three dozen lnrge maples along a road taken out entirely. It would look much better and be ns usable If the row had been thinned to 50 or even 75 feet. If the rond wero well made the trees would not Injure It nt all. Lot's have some shalo on our new ronds. LeRoy Cady, as sociate horticulturist, University Farm, St. Paul. Plant Some Trees. Determine Profits. FnnnerB' profits arc determined by the difference between production nnd transportation costs nnd the selling prices. Production must cense when the transportation costs wipe out the difference, MITES CAUSE OF SCALY LEG Application of Crude Petroleum to Legs With Brush or Dipping Is Best Treatment. Two species of Itcji mites attack fowls, one of which is tho cnuso of scaly leg. While this mite commonly remains ou tho feet, burrowing through the scales nnd cnuslng their enlargement, it also attacks tho comb and the neck. A crust of looso tissue Is formed nbovo tho burrows, and In teuso Itching results from this mining habit. When scnly leg Is left untreat ed the feet of tho birds often becomo badly distorted, and in sotno cases the fowl can scarcely walk or get to the perch. Sometimes terminal JoInVu of the toea are lost. As tho mites nro transferred from ono bird to another, scaly-leg fowls should bo trented promptly nnd should not ho Introduced among clean birds. Investigations made under tho super vision of tho United 'States Depart ment of Agriculture show that car bollneum or crude petroleum used on the roosts doubtless will aid In pre venting the spread of the scaly-leg mite from one fowl to another. Ap plying crude petroleum to tho legs with a brush or dipping tho legs into this oil Is very effective. One appli cation usually Is sulllclent, but If tho scales nre not lnrgely shed off after n lntisi nf 30 davs the treatment should bo repeated. Kerosene oil Is applied by some fnrmers In the same way, out effective than crude oil. In using either, enre should be taken not to get tho oil on the upper part oi the leg or on tho fenthcrs. GIVE CHICKENS EARLY FEED Excellent Plan to Have Some Grain Scattered In Litter Ready for Their Breakfast. If there Is a reasonable amount of litter on the floor und the house Is rat- proof, It Is a practical plan to feed so that there will be some grain left In the Utter overnight. This will he an Inducement to the hens to get to work ns soon as It Is daylight. That's one practical and Inexpensive method ot prolonging the day. As a rule, hens like to go to tho perches rather early In the evening on cold days, but they will be down at dawn If they know that they will find something to ent. See to It that some grain Is thero In tho litter ready for them. This Is an easier and plensanter method than getting around to do the feeding bo- lore daylight. If the hens loaf on tho perches until broad daylight one of two things Is wrong: Either tho house Is too dark or tho hens are over fed. Either condition Is readily cor rected and It will ho dollars In your pocket to do so. SORT OF PULLET 10" RETAIN Fowl, That Is Well Matured, Has Strong Constitution and Lays Early Is Valuable.
