Children of Holland and France Look for Santa Claus' Visit Early In the Month. N THE strict order of things children should have hung up their stockings for Santa Claus on Dec. 6, and re joiced In his Rifts. For It wus the feast of St. Nicholas, alias Santa Claus. He has nothing what ever to do wlHi Christmas, and his visit then Is an Anglo-Saxon anach ronism, which came from America fifty years ago. As their patron saint, children were taught to look to Nich olas for care and protection. To show the reality of ids love for hoys and girls, parents relntod that on his eve lie went up and down the earth rewarding- the good with presents, as lie Iind In Ills life secretly thrown purses of gold Into the rooms of poor maid ens through the window. Children were taught to hang up their stock ings which parents noting as the saint's deputlos filled with sweets, npplcs, nuts and toys. In. England the custom was nhollshed with the wor ship of saints at the Reformation, and was rc-estahllslied In the Ameri can guise of Father Christmas in the middle of hist century. But in Holland Santo Claus makes Ids visit on the right day, Dec. 5. In stead of stockings, the Dutch children place their shoes, with straw In them for the donkey on which Nicholas rides, in front of the fireplace. In the morning good children find pres ents there, hut the shoes of the nnughty contain only n hlrch. The custom Is tho same In France. In southern Austria, n young man, ar rayed as St. Nicholas, In episcopal robes, visits each house nnd examines the children In their catechism. To those who answer well the saint's at tendant angels give fruit nnd sweets, while demons nro admitted to terror ize tho careless. On going to hed the children place baskets or dishes on tho window sill for his future gifts. Catholic Germany furnishes the transi tion between the origin of Nicholas and modern Santa Clans. Arrayed ns Father Christmas, he visits each home and question the children as to (heir past conduct. For Iho good then.' are cakes and fruit, and for nil a lecture. He then asks what presents they would like the Christ-child to bring at Christmas. London Dally Chronicle. FOR THEIR CHRISTMAS PARTY Appropriate Decorations ,Add to tho Zest and Gayety of tho Yuletldo Festivities. IF SANTA CLAUS is to bo present nt the Christmas par I ty supper and of course he should ho invited ho may appear In nn automobile, but In order to be quite orthodox ho should be driving his eight reindeer through the snow; and therefore the hostess should use a strip of snowy cotton wool plentifully sprinkled with frost for th! table center. Purchase a somewhat large Snntn Claus; he will be mort effective dressed In a lirown cloak with scarlet Imoil and cap. A fniicy basket In the form of a wheelbarrow or chariot will aii'-wer the purpose for hN sldgh, and should be loaded with presents of all kinds. The iidiidcer. which citn be filled with Mveci-i, may be ban osed to the sleigh with scarlet ribbon" on which have lieen sewn a number of tiny bells. At Intervals down the table plaeo boxes of bonbons hi the form of Yule Jogs, with garlands of berried holly and mistletoe arranged from log to log, the menus to be In banner form, each one being held by n miniature Father Christinas. A Cinderella scheme for the supper table Is pretty. For the c ner pur chase from your florist the wire frame of n conch. Cover It thinly with mo-s, binding it on with hemp; then oor It with scarlet gonmluins. attaching the blossoms to the coach with line silver wire; hnrii"ss two milk-white toy horses to It with ribbons to match the geraniums. A suinrt little coach man nnd footman must be placed on their respective p'nees. and a doll to represent Cinderella dressed for the ball should be Hittlnu Inside. Appropriate presents to be placed for tin1 children would consist of n slipper filled with sweeties for each little ho.. nnd u doll dressed as a fnlry in white gauze spotted with sil ver stars, holding a tiny wand, would delight the heart of each little girl. mm About the Mistletoe COLES, In his "Art of Hlmpllng," observes. "If one hang mistletoe about the neck the witches can have no power of him." Some llngorlng superstition remains In the present day, and In many houses n bunch of the mistletoe Is sus pended from the celling, under which the male port of the as sembly have the privilege of taking the ladles and saluting them. At the same time they should wish them a luippy new year nnd present them with one of the berries for good luck. In other places people try by lots by the cracking of tho loaves Aim berries In the fire. An Unsatisfactory Plan. "Why, Johnny," said the caller, as tho lad wept bitterly, "crying on Christmas morning?" "Yuh yesslr," sobbed Johnny. "Wo all agreed In our family this year to gug-glve each other only what wo needed most." "Well, that Isn't such a bad Idea, is It? Nothing to cry nbout. anyhow, eh?" "It's rur-rotten," sobbed Johnny. "Dnd gave nie n Hckln'." ' 1 6 - - 8 DR. J. S.
