A failure of the Infant crop for fifteen years would result In the decay cf the habit of hanging up stockings, mid only an tiquarians would nny longer tnke the trouble to have Christmas trees. Of course, in such an unthinkable con tingency as tluit our world would bo In such a desperate state of dejection that It would have no fun, though It would go through the motions of ex istence from habit. A great deal has been said, written nnd sung nhout the plum pudding or old England, hut centuries ngo It bad n formidable rival for epicurean favor kifown as plum-pottage or porridge. It consisted of beef or mutton made Into a broth, thickened with brown brend, which whs - then thoroughly boiled after raisins, currants, prunes, cloves, mnce and ginger had been add ed. This dish Is now entirely obsolete, though "Poor Richard's Alinnnae" mentions It as late as 1750, and a Mrs. Frhzer, who published a cook-book in Edinburgh In 1701, announcing her self on Its title page us the only teach er of the gnjnt art of cookery In that city, gives a recipe for making It. while Brand, the popubjr antiquary, tells how he partook of It at a Christ mas dinner In the mansion of nn old English gentleman In 1801, but It has long since been wholly supplemented by plum pudding. The origin of the latter Is veiled Into obscurity. Tho curliest cook-book which makes any reference to It Js tho one by Mrs. Fnizer nlrcndy referred to as contain ing a recipe for plum pottage.
