MA.N1 and gront are the changes which hnve occurred In Encland slnco Dickens wrote "A Christmas Carol," but they have not affected the national lovo for the festival and the determination to preserve unimpaired the traditional wagmth and heartiness of its celebration. Christmas week is still tho great week of the year for the English people. It Is the one week when scattered families are reunited, when tender memories and old asso ciations are revived, when friend greets friend with a cheery expanstveness in striking contrast with the character istic reserve of the English nature, so, undemonstrative to those who do hot kjiow it well, apparently so dis tant nnd unsympathetic. From Wednesday all business will bo suspended, not to be resumed till Mondny morning. The whole nation will give itself up to good cheer and good fellowship, and for a brief season, all strife and controversy are hushed, and peace, charity and concord reign supreme. Good Year for Violets. Sweet peas have been forced for tho Christmas market only for many years past. They must be started blooming before tho cold wentl.-er begins, Then they will bloom nil winter. Daffodils do not get In until February, but al most nil tho rest of tho spring flowers, hyacinths, nnrcissusos, bavardln, and so on, nro on tho Christmas countors. Easter lilies, too, though rather cold and while for Christmas, are sold. Vi olets, aro lino this winter, deeply, darkly, beautifully blue. Some mi gnonette now comes In enormous sprays. There are carnations but tho bright red Christmas carnation ts tho favorite. Holly comes from tho hills of Maryland and tho south. Tho wild holly supplies the market and thcro has never seemed to be any percepti ble diminution of the supply. Great quantities of It nrc purchased by all sorts of dealers, who decorate tkclr stores with It and send out n sprig at tached to every Christmas parcel. SAD FATE Wooden Sol dier: After faith ful service In the nursery for a year, I will bo cast aside for a new toy this Christmas. Dumb Animals Remembered. Tlio noblest observances of Christ mas aro its charities. In nil nges and among all peoples tho poor have nl ways been bountifully remembered on that day, and In many parts of Eng land and Scotland oven the lower ani mals aro given an extra feeding that they, too, may have cause for rejoic ing wJicn nil mankind nro glad. Many readers will remember Burns' address of the auld farmer to his mare when presenting her with an extra feed of corn on Now Year's day. "A guid New Year 1 wish thee, Maggie. Hac. there's a rlpp to thy auld baggie." Best of All Holidays TAKING It all In all, It may bo safety asserted that Christinas Is the merriest nnd tho best of all holidays, and one which Is likely to bo observed for ajres yet to come. Nations may rlsa and fall, new beliefs ni'd ro- llglons may sweep away tho old, but that would seem, indeed, a dreary and empty year wiucn brought no merry Christmas in its annual round. May old ra ther Time Ioiik snaro his holi day to mankind to gladden the hearts of all with Its coming, and may each Christmas be still merrier than the last. An Ancient Christmas Dish. An Indispensable Christmas dish of ancient tlmesv was "frumenty" of "frumantc." Here Is tho recipe fot making the dish according to a faith ful old chronicler: "Tnko clean wheat and bray It In a mortar until tho hulls bo all gone off, and scctho it until it burst, and take it up nnd let it cool; nnd tnko clean, fresh broth nnd sweet milk of almonds or sweet milk of kino and temper It nil ; and tako tho yolks of eggs. Boil it a little and set it down and mess it forth with fat veni son or frcsli mutton." Frumenty was often served alono without venison or mutton. When served by Itself it was well sweetened. Wc are not going to have u Christ mas tree, writes a correspondent. To make them brilliant many pretty little ornaments are needed nnd -they cost a good deal. My plan Is for a bnrrel in place of a tree. I have the barrel now In a closet. It is covered with old dark green cambric and the day beforo tho great holiday I urn -going to pin sprigs of evergreen nnd holly over It. It will look pretty gay, I think, when It is fdied Willi the gifts thnt arc go ing Into It now, all prettily tissued and tied, nnd my son ns Jolly Old Santa Claus stands over It to delve in to its mysteries nnd to proclaim tho names of those who nro to solve them. I am sure we will enjoy our bnrrel an much as wo would a tree. Opal Watts left for Kearney Mon . day whero she is teaching school. Tn tlio records of every nation we nnd traditions of the Christmas festi vnl. traditions which have been hand ed down from generation to genera tion in oft-told tales which turmoil the hearts of the listeners with al ternate fear and delight. Sir Walter Scott tells us that they xwho aro born upon Christinas or Good Friday will sec spirits, and will have tho power of commanding them. He nlso adds thnt tho Spaniards imputed tho down cast looks of their monarch, Philip II, to tho disagreeable visions to which this privilege subjected him. DR. 0. H. CRESSLER, Graduate Dcntisl Office over the McDonald State Bunk. Bring Smiles of Gladness. It is not so much the thought of re ceiving the customary holiday gifts which most pleases the fancy, but rather that pleasure tho heart derives from dwelling upon Joyful surprises It may bestow upon others. To bring a smile of gladness upon another's face Is, Indeed, n boon more precious than a Christmas gift, and the Joy of bestowing can never be equaled by the receiving. IJOl'LB cannot be too care ful In guarding against flro when trimming a Christmas tree, snya a correspondent in Good Housekcep- lnir. There have been scores of Christ mas tree fatalities In homes nnd In Sunday schools which a littlo caro might have, prevented. Tho writer once set a treo In a blaze, consuming nearly half of It, tinsel omnments go ing with lho green branches. A tiny candle hnd been wired too high, nnd it took only a few minutes of itsbrlsk heat to char n branch above it and start a tlamc. A thick portiere was torn' from its pole and thrown over the blaze". If it had not been a,t hand tho light window curtains would have caught DrQ in another minute. Slnco thnt Christmas our tree has always been placed In the center of tho room, nnd wo have eschewed cotton wool, tissue-paper angels, and celluloid or- nnmcnts. First of all, wc wire each candlo securely in place at tlio furth est end of n branch which has noth ing nbovo it, either flr tree or trim ming. Then ns the treo is denuded we wntcli carefully the fast-disappearing candles.
