One merchant told us last Saturday afternoon that by JVlunday he would have nil of his stock oiMhe counters and would be ready for the Christmas business. Wo looked over the slock. Now to romody this condition the rabbits are being trained every day by a compet ent force of men and we will have no more largo number of killings. Under ordinary cdndltlons this Is a clean and oxclting sport and the num ber of rabbits killed Is only about flftoon to twonty porcont of the num ber engaged. This Ih a sport that has gained wido popularity throughout the Suspicion Is a poison which dostroyg the stalwarts of tho earth. No one can : Country. It Is not tho Intention of the stand against It. Tho Directors of the Chamber of Commorco hold an open mooting in tho Court Room Tuesday nlgh't for ,tho public discussion of the proposi tion for an Increased gas rate, that Is to bo made by tho .North Plntte Light l'owor Co. Tho discussion took tho form of a debate. C. It. Morey, local manager of tho Company furnishing .tuo gnu to North Platto was the first .spoakcr. Ho gavo a detailed presen tation of tho question as It appeared In North Platte papers it few weeks ago. JIo thou rend from newspaper clippings of tho nctlon taken In other placos under similar conditions and maintained that tho request was reas onable nnd fair and in line with what (ithor placos havo done. W. IS. Shumnn was called on to take tho part of thoso opposed to tho raise In rates. Ho claimed tho franchise granted by tho Council was a bargain and wns valid and could not bo brok en or changed. He maintained that the local Light & Power Co, hnd been bonded for a gigantic sum and that i wn not right to ralso the rates to pay ; merest on watered stock. W. V. Ilonglnnd next was called up on to support tho stand taken by Mr. Shumun. Ho claimed tho North Platto Light & Power Co. belonged lo the Union Light & Power Co. of Omuhn. and that It was an example of uoro- pinno finance. Ho said that tho Coun cil had no right to grant n rulse in rates slnco tho people by vote had approved the franchise. Ho said tho Company 'should glvo ub good gas bo- roro coming before the people asking lor a rnlso in rates. He proposed that the peoplo of this part of tho county organize h district, bond Iho commun ity from bore to the lllrdwood and put In a plant which would furnish electricity nt a ruto that would invite nmnufacturera Ho clnlmod It Is lar ceny to collect 12 cents a kilowatt for electricity. J. J. Halllgan spoke tho cloning ur Kumeut for the gas sldo of the ques tion. He road from the Charter of the City of North Plntte where It said that only the City Council had powor to grant franchises and rogulato Uio price of water, gas. electricity, etc Ho denied that Interest on tho more than $500,000 bonds was being prUI and offorod on the part of tho Light & Power Company to let any cerUfled accountant examine the hooks and make any kind of a report of facts found therein. During his talk there was a disposition to interrupt him with lrrelevent questions but this was promptly suppressed by Chairman Dlxoh and the rp'rlt of the meeting seemed t one r fvrness to both sides. At the close of Mr,. Ilalllgan's speoch, Chairman Dlxou announced the discussion of the subject before the Directors ot the Chamber of Com merce to be closed, and announced that the Directors would probably Issue some statement or make some recommendation to the City Council of its findings in the matter. Som- of those present did not seem inelln I to want, to stop the discussion bo 'hey had some more speech making o vote was finally taken by those remained which was overwhelm' ni.,ulnnt any raise In rates.
