Hugh Wardell begun u dream and tried to live It out. He was humble. obscure, but the gentle Influence of a bcnutlful girl hud Instilled a lasting Impulse In his soul to make himself worthy of her. Uc was eighteen yeuis of age when his father died. Hugh had not known n mother's care since, he was a babe. The old ruin of n house they lived In wns located on the shore of a great western river, and for half a century Gnbrlel Wardell hud made his living by fishing. Hugh' wns still a boy when he was left alone In the world. For some time lie bad assisted his father at his dally work, and llshlng was all that he knew anything nbout. Half a mile away llcd Homer Iteeso and his only child, a daughter, Miriam, was Just the ago of Hugh. Like tho latter she never knew a mother's love. This deprivation naturally brought boy and girl together in spirit. Mr. Reese was getting old. He made a proposition to Hugti to live at his home and continue his business, share and jluiro alike. At the best there was nothing better than a bare living assured, but this was enough for Hugh as long as lie had the sweet companionship of Miriam. To tho ardent souled lad she wns the all In all of life. A's to herself, tho sincere admiration and friendship of Hugh made her almost satisfied with her humblo lot. Mr. Iteese bad secured the exclusive Ilsh and shell rights to n long swamp strip of river shore, and the fresh wnter clams were abundant. Hugh had traded his father's boat for a horse and wagon. Under the guidance of his more mature partner Hugh entered upon double duty. Ten miles distant a button factory had started and there wns a regular demand for clnm shells. During off season fishing spells, with rake nnd pronged fork Hugh loaded shells Into his wagon and conveyed them to market. As he received as much as sixty dollars per ton and sold six tons the first year, this extra en deavor meant considerable In the way of Income, Mnny a time when alone with Hugh the old man revealed his hopes and ambitions regarding Miriam. "5Iy daughter must have an educa tion." ho said earnestly. "It Is iho one thought In my mind day and night. It Is so slow earning and saving Hint get disheartened at times." "You menn she will hnve to go away from here to school?" asked Hugh blankly. Yes, Hugh. There Is a girls' col lege at Ironton and she has an old aunt living In that 1 town, poor, but willing to look after her I am sure, It's the first fitting out, the getting stnrted. Then I know Miriam Is smart enough to work her way througt college." After that Hugh began to work nnd scrape nnd save Just as Mr. Iteeso was doing to add lo tho slowly devel oping surplus of their business. It was nbout a week before Miriam was eighteen that Hugh came Into the house looking eager nnd excited. Ho sought out bis partner to find him In the attic mending n fishing net. Miriam's sweet voice could be heard singing downstairs so he knew that they would be free from Interruption, "I've made It, Mr. Itoose, "announced Hugh, almost breathlessly. "Oh. tho rare luck of It 1" He held between thumb and fore linger n beautiful pearl. Its shimmer dazzled Mr. Iteeso. "Pure nnd per fect," he spoke. Where did yon ever get It?" "Spilled over a shovelful in loading. I stepped on It nnd noticed It. It weighs thirty-eight grains nnd the gem people made a price of eight hundred nnd fifty dollnrs. You are to take It as If you were the finder. Miriam I" and Hugh's eyes were radiant. "Her edu cation!" and Hugh's lips quivered So It came about that Miriam went nway, fully able to enter tho lists of learning with money enough to see her thi'ough a two gears' course. Hugh kept his eyes open for a now find, .hut It never came about Some small Imperfect pearls en mo his way, but it seemed ns If destiny had bulked Its favor for one concroto need only. He would dream of the great future in store for Miriam, and Idenllze bow she would marry some one of the cultured city men, mnybe visit them once In a while, but tho hope of ever winning the love of one so far above him hnd been nbnndoned long since. Sho came back to tho old home ns though it was but yesterday that she' had left It. She fell Into its old way prcpnred to brighten It up. but with no expression of desiring otlier com pnnlonshlp than that of Its Inmntes One day Mr. Iteeso camo to Hugh "My boy," ho remarked, "my con sclenco wouldn't let mo keep tho truth from Miriam about the pearl that meant her education to her." "What did she say?" faltered II ugh. "Sho cried," wns the reply. "And then she looked through the open win dow nt you as you stood hitching up tho team. There wns tluit In her bonny eyes of fondness that told of world of love. 'Noble anil true nl wnvs.' she sobbed, and hid her face on my shoulder and whispered softly.
