The Nursing Service ui' the American Red Cross throughout Nebraska has assumed propor tions undreamed of during the last year. A year ago the Ntnit; hnd but one Ited Cross nurse. Today prac tlcnlly every large city In the state has u lurge or small staff of STILL ( GREATEST ijCmZR EWORLD trained nurses. The chapters are paying particular nttcntlon to their districts where health work has been neglected. For this reason r. large number of classes In nursing Instruc tion arc In progress at this time. The city problem nnd the rural prob lem for visiting nurses arc necessarily different, but tho same fundamentals of training ure needed to prepare the nurse to cope with them, and the young woman who assumes tho.respon slblllty of a rural situation must be exceptionally broad vlsloncd nnd well prepared, becauso the service usually is Isolated nnd the Individual nurse has to depend upon her own Initiative In matters that are exclusively profes sional. Great Task Ahead. The Nursing Service has a great work to perform In Nebraska. De 'splto the fact that work along this lino has been neglected, the Red Cross chapters arc rallying to tlio cause and Intend to "carry on." An example of the excellent work the Nursing Service Is doing was clear ly demonstrated recently during the school Inspection In one of the rural schools. The1 nurse, in her examina tion found that the school of 203 pu pils did not have one normal child. She Immediately called a meeting of the parents and Informed them as to j the serious condition. The children also were lectured on health essen- j tlols. This nurse will, from time to I time, receive a report of the children's health and will f6l!ow up her work . i. i i I, iiuuuKiiuiii tin." yuur. Teaches Many Subjects. The examination of "the school ehll- J dren Is just one of the Important phases of the nurse's work. She con ducts classes In home hygiene and mnl j nutrition ; sho aids In the establishing ' of health centers ; she instructs vol- untecr workers and organizes commu nity work In all she Is the teacher, i In many of the smaller districts of Nebraska where the Red Cross chap ters have been unable to carry on the task through lack of workers, a num ber of the chapters have combined their- Interests nnd work under one Ited Cross chapter. This was true In the community around Knox county, where eight Ited Cross chapters con solidated and now work under wone chapter the Knox County chapter. Everywhere In Nebraska the great est Interest Is being manifested In, the work for health and the chapters ure furnishing recreational and other com munity needs. JUNIOR RED CROSS BUSY IN NEBRASKA With the opening of school this term In Nebraska the Junior Red Cross ac tivities huvc began with enthusiasm. The year's program presented many new features for the boys and girls, nnd they entered Upon It with revived Interest. Many local projects of servico to the schools and to unfortunate children is being stimulated by partial an I com plete financial reports by the Junior Red Cross. Such projects, except In case of unfortunate children, are In volving the betterment of the schools as u whole nnd. not any special group. Tho Junior Red Cross intends to co operate more than ever with the BChools throughout Nebraska this year. In all the communities it Is working with tho school authorities in carrying on regular class room activities. Of course, the boys and girls will help this full with tho community work, as they have in the past. Tho annual clean-up programs will be aid ed by tho Junior Red Cross, as well as the promotion of health campaigns. :o:: ' Mra, W.. A.
