In 18G9 thov camn to Omnlin. whore Mr. Worthly was In charge of tho power In tho Union Pacific. Ho was thoro three years. From Omaha ho went to Ilawllns, Wyo., for n short time and then In 1873 ho came to North Platto to tako charge of tho handling of tho power In tho Round House. In that capacity ho built tho first engine around tho first boiler built nt this point. In 1880 ho took up a homestead, living on It and working In tho shop at tho samo tlmo. In 188G ho left the service of tho Union Pacific and gave up rail roading for good. Ho lived on his ranch and ran a dairy and raised cat tle In 1906 ho retired to his homo In North Plntto. At one tlmo In his early days ho was City Councilman of North Platto for two terms but public llfo did not suit him very well, although ho wns active In the development of tho city and tho sur rounding country. From the time ho arrived In Omaha until his death he only loft tho stato onco. -No chlldron came to tho homo of the Worthly's so In Apr'l 1870 they adopted an Infunt boy nnd cnlled him John Parko Worthly.
