In the following article Superin tendent Snyder of tho Kxporlmontal Substation has wrltton In nn Intorest lng and oaslly undoratood manner tho chief facts contained In a rathor tech nical bulletin on "Forage Poisoning" tainted as Extouslon circular No. 33 of the University of Illinois. According to this circular, tho cause of many dlseasoa among farm ainmals duo to forago poisoning has been traced to an organism or( vory closely rolatod group of organisms which the scientists" call Bacillus Datulinus. This is the organism which causos poisoning from oating spoiled meat or vegetables or olives. Tho food may appear wholesome and yet bo very poisonous. Thoro is no way of determining tho condition of tho food except in tho laboratory or by feeding it to animals. Tho poison may bo present in practically any kind of food. Although "cornstallv' poisoning was not mentioned in the circular it is prohablo that it would bo placed in this class. Tho toxin is develdpcd on tho food rather than after the food lias been taken lntotho body. In this respect tho poison is liko strychnine or ar senic. It is Independent in its action, of the organisms that produco it. Tho polson is usually taken into tho body with food or water although it may outer through an Injury. It Is very virulent. The tasting of contamnated vegetables has boon fatal to man in some instances. One drop of a lab oratory samplo Injected under tho skin of a thousand pound horso has proven fatal. Much has been accomplished in pre venting and overcoming tho effects of the poison by tho uso of scrum. It is doubtful however, if this treatment has yot reached a stage of develop ment whoro it is practicable for tho ranchman, though in sevoro attacks it would bo worth trying. Tho chief remedy is a complete change of feed, now pastures or new forago. This is not a now proccoduro as it is now usual for tho stockman to change all tho conditions rathor than guess at the specific source of the trouble. It is recommended that infected hay or grain bo spread to tho air and sun light and if possible washod with water. It is gratifying to learn that the Experiment Station are sorlouily I busy on thoso problems.
