NORTH PLATTE SBMT.WEEKTjT TRIBUNE. PACKAGES HELP TO SELL GOODS .Desirability of Packing Products in Clean, Sound Containers Is Emphasized. 'REGENT INSTANCE IS CITED (Farmer, Who Shipped Large Amount of Butter In Dark, Unattractive Barrels Suffers Loss of 8 Cents a Pound on Shipment The desirability of packing fnrm products In clean, sound contnlners Is ;ngnln emphnsized by the loss of 5350 recently suffered by a producer In con anectlon with n single shipment of but ter, soy specialists of the bureau of markets, United States department of agriculture. Used Dark-Colored Barrels. This farmer shipped In barrels un wilted butter that scored 89 points. IJeeause of the dark gray color of the 'barrels, which suggested packing stock butter, the receiver was unable to In terest buyers In the commodity. He nllzlng that he would be unable to sell It at all In that condition, ho salted and reworked the butter and then packet! it In butter tubs. Although tho butter had deteriorated In quality 1y this time-, tho niinearance, of tho Other Things Being Equal the Lower Parcel Post Packages Will Market Better Because of Their More At tractive Appearance. packages commanded the attention of hnyers niul the butter was promptly sold;. The loss, to the shipper was practically 8 cents a pound, or over .$350 on tho entire shipment a loss lint would have been avoided In tho 41rst place had the shipper packed the butter properly, and- n loss thnt would have been grenter had not tho receiver done so. The same principle applies to eggs, -beans, or any other commodity, say the bureau's experts. If the packages -present an Inviting nppearance. the wile Is half made; for good-looking packages suggest contents of high quality. Another Illustration. Another Illustration given by the bureau of markets Is that of a coun try creamery that forwarded a five tub sample shipment of butter to a Commission firm and received an of fer for future shipments. In tho next shipment the creamery used second hand tubs Instead or bright, new, clean, attractive packages, such as -were used In the five-tub sample. Al though the butter shipped was uni form In quality and scored 02 points, the commission firm was unable to dispose of it as "extrns." and tho ship per was compelled to take n loss of ,2 cents a pound on the shipment. 'STRIPED CUCUMBER BEETLES Clean Garden of All Forms of Vegeta. tlon In Fall and Burn It to De stroy Harmful Pests. The best way to handle the striped -cucumber beetle Is by cleaning the garden In the fall of all fo'nns of veg etntlon and making a bonfire of It. "The adjacent plots to tho garden houhl also bo raked and tho rubbish uurndf. In this way many species of insects will he killed that would oth erwise live through the winter. Many "mall gardeners leave the garden cleaning until spring nnd then wonder -at the numerous forms of Insect life. One day of cleaning and burning In I ho fall saves several days of Insect nicking during the spring and the loss oi a number of plants. Some observ es make the statement that one day , In the fall Is equal to ten days of - tghtlng the young In the spring. Among the birds that have been seen eating the cucumber beetle on several occa sions are the quail, English sparrow, wren, grosbeck and oriole. HINTS FOR SUMMER WEATHER Extra Care Should Be Taken to See That Young Chicks Are Not In jured by Hot Sun. In hot weather, special care Is nec--o.ary to prevent chicks from being overheated by exposure to tho sun, confinement where ventilation Is bud, or overcrowding. The brooder should be under shelter, with good circula tion of air around It, and tho number of chicks should not be greater than It will accommodate comfortably un der hot weather conditions. life-' PLAN TO MAKE YARD FOR POULTRY FLOCK South Side of Building Is Favored by Experts. Height of Fences Will Need to Be Reg ulated by the Variety of Fowls Hexagonal Wlre'Nettlng Is Not Expensive, If convenient, It Is well -to hnva double yards, for then one may rotate green crops. Small yards may bo sown to oats, wheat, rye, rapesecd, etc., but If largo yards are nvullable they can be kept In n permanent sod ot bluegrass, alfalfa, or clover. Wlillo tho fowls are using one ynnd the green feed In the other Is getting- a fresh start. If tho yards nre to be on only ono sldo of tho house, they should be on the south side In order that tho fowls may have the benefit of tho first dry ground In early spring. It not Infre quently happens that In localities where snow Is abundant the ground on the south sldo Is dry many day's be fore that on the north side. If the yards arc to be In permanent sod and aro to furnish green feed for the fowls, 70 to 80 square feet should bo allowed for each bird. If part of tho green feed Is to be provided for other wise, nnd the ynrds used mnlnly for exercise grounds, 35 to 40 square feet for each bird will bo sufficient, poul try specialists of the United States department of ngrlculturo say. Hexagonal wire netting, 2-Inch mesh. Is suitable for fencing and can Ife nought cheaply. Where several runs are ndjoinlng, the fences may be boarded up at the bottom to a Height of 2 to 2 feet, or 1-Inch mesh wire can bo used In place of these hoards, fo prevent the males lighting one nn other. Height of fences will need to ho regulated by the variety of fowls. The heaviest breeds, like, tho Brnhtuns, may be restrained by a -1-foot fence, while most of tho other breeds can be kept In by n 0-foot fence. Some of the Ilnmburgs and leghorns, however, need a 7 or 8 foot fence. By clipping the (light feathers on one wing they enn be kept Jn wltlmut much trouble. Gntes should bo provided In order to permit access from one yard to the next. Shade of some kind should be pro vlded, nnd this can often bo ndvan tngeously furnished by planting fruit trees (such ns pear, plum, peach, cherry nnd apple) In tho yard. VEGETABLES GROWN IN FALL Some of Pickling and Cannlnq Stock Missed in Spring or Summer Can Be Produced, After the hot summer weather is passed, when the nutumn rnlns have begun ono slfoult plan for the fall garden. There are many vegetables that will mature In n short time thnt are welcome additions to the bill of fareT and some of the pickling nnd canning stock that we failed to get In the spring or summer can yet be pro duced. WELL SELECTED CORN SEED Supply Should Be Set Aside at Time Crop Is Being Husked Store In Dry Place. e The corn for seed should bo selected and saved when It Is being husked. Save no enrs for seed which are not of medium size, fnlr, rows straight, even nnd of-the stnndnrd color antf borne at least two on the stalk. Seed corn should be spread out In tho grnnnry or on the top floor of the bnrn where It will keep dry. FALL GREEN BEANS FAVORED Superior Vegetable for Canning or Pickling Red Valentine Is Always Tender. Fall green benns are Just tho thing for canning or pickling as the con tinued cool weather Is less apt to cause them to spoil. The Bed Valen tine Is a favorite variety for fall planting ns they come quick, are al ways tender and strlngless, and yield heavily. LOCATION OF FARM HOME O When planning to hulld a O II m 1 . What does it cost to keep n cow for n year or to produce 100 pounds of market milk? To answer this ques tion In terms of labor, feed, add other cost factors the dairy division of tho United Stntes department of agricul ture has been collecting for several year fuels and figures from various sections of tho country The results for northwestern Indiana, typical of many farms supplying the Chicago market, arc now available In bulletin form. In collecting the Information tho department worked In co-operation with Purdue university. To give permanent vnluo to tholg ures, tho Investigators determined tile cost of milk production chiefly In terms of feed, Inbor, nnd other Impor tant factors. Thus by applying cur rent vnlues to any cf tho Items a dairy man, or anyone else Interested, mny compare his present costs with those published by thp department. Practi cal farms owned or handled by resi dent farmers were used In tho Inves tigation. Among the outstanding results nre the following: The unit requirements for keeping a cow ono yenr were: ConcentrAtes, 1.02 tons; dry roughage, 3.04 tons; hauling tfnd grinding concentrates, 51.5R ; bedding, 0.30 tons; pasture, 1.30 acres; human labor, 101.5 hours; horse labor, 10.2 hours; overhead and other costs, $27.11. Credits other than milk: Manure, 0.8 tons; calves, 0.87of ono calf. Feed and pasture comprised 57.0 per cent of the total cost of produc tion; labor, 19.5 per cent; ovorhend and other cost, 22.0 per cent. Tho totnl cost was offset 22.3 per cent by cnlves and manure. A different per centage relationship would exist, how ever, If present prices for the various Items were usod. The extent to which cows, of high production save Inbor was shown One Way of Lowering the Cost of Milk Production Is by Having Cows of Good Breeding and High Pro. ducers. clearly by comparative figures for the 25 herds studied. The owner of one herd of cows averaging 0,200 pounds of milk nnnunlly had to feed and milk nine cows to obtain the same quan tity of milk ns that given 12 average cows In other herds. The results mentioned, together with other details, are given more ful ly In the new publication department Bulletin 858, "Requirements and Cost of Producing Milk In Northwestern Indiana." ' FLY PROTECTION FOR STOCK Destroy Larvae or Maggots, Remove Breeding Places and Use Fish Oil Repellent There are three ways In which ani mals may be protected fjrom flics. One lb by destroying the lnrvne or maggots from which the flies develop; another Is to keep the stable or bam dark and cool, ns Hies do not usually bother the animals under those conditions, and the other way Is to apply an oil or spray to the animal which acts as a repellent. The Jjrecdlng places for the flies are the decaying straw and ma nure plies, whero the ties live over the winter nnd where they propagate during wnrm wenther. The minimum amount of these around tho bnrns will help to minimize the number of illcs. An oil preparation which can be used ns a repellent on the animals can be made as follows: One gallon of fish oil, two ounces of oil of pine tar, two ounces of oil of pennyroyal, one-half pint of kerosene. MOTORTRUCK AIDS DAIRYMEN Vehicle Cheapens Cost of Haul, Speeds Up the Delivery and Saves Valu able Time. Dnlrymen everywhere have found tho motortruck a great help In deliver ing their products to their pntrons. Tt cheapens tho haul, speeds up the deliv ery, and saves much vnluable time and Inbor. It also Insures the delivery of the dnlfy products In much better con dition which will Insure better prices nnd better sntlsfled customers. The only wonder Is thnt more dairymen have not purchnscd motortrucks. Know Cow's Profitableness. Test your cows and know .whether they nre eating up your profits as well 518 your feed. Horticultural Facts PRUNING FARM APPLE TREES Regulated More In Accordance With Owner's Conditions Than In Qen. eral Orcharding. Pruning of apple trees on the gen eral farm Is regulated inoro In accord ance with tho owner's farm conditions than where orcharding Is the main oc cupation. Tho trees must' be shaped to enable tho fanner and his team to make satisfactory progress with plow, cultivator and harrow. When quite young, the trees 'Wo trained to grow straight and tall for several years, until the lower branches can be spared and tho treo assumes n permanent form. This can generally be accom plished within n few years after plant ing. No permnnent limbs nre allowed to form closer to the. ground thnn 4 feot, nnd many at thnt height will have to be sacrificed. Three to live main branches aro genornlly sufficient. It Is wlso to cut these bnck to within a foot of tho free, leaving a terminal bud whero the branch Is removed, so that an elbow forms, pointing upward, giv ing great strength to the branch and spread to the tree.. 'The laterals re ceive like treatment In a year or two. A tree thus started will huve little use for a central stem whleluexcludes the sunlight so necessnry for tho fruit. We tlml thnt too sovero' topping of the tree Is apt to Induce sun scald on tho branch or body of the tree. Having given the treo Its founda tion shnpe, the next care Is to keeping that shape. Each year attention Is given to removal of water shoots or suckers, branches that cross each oth er or shut out the sunlight and Inter- Apple Tree Properly Pruned. fere with spraying. Perhaps 20 feet Is the limit- to the height of an apple tree with these general form condi tions In view. March Is a good month In which to prune. BEST SOIL FOR STRAWBERRY Field Which Has Produced Good Crop -of Corn Is Favored Manure Is Benoficlal. Strawberries will thrive on a great variety of soils, but a very fertile soil brings theT)ist results. For an average Held which has produced a good crop of corn about ten loads of manuro per acre, evenly spread this fall, with the manure sprender, wouhl be benellcjnl to the growth of strawberries. Then tho Held can be plowed early next spring and disced and burrowed until the mnnure Is thoroughly worked Into the soil. Mnnure should be plnced on the strawberry ground ns soon as possible 'nfter leaving tho stnbles as this helps to keep down the development of tho will to grubs which eat off tho roots of strawberry plants.
