' 12th. tttmmS I?".' wqui i u ' jJiMjbw''?i . , OF LUCK By GENEVIEVE ULMAR (Copyright. 1920, Wentern Newspaper Union.) A thousand dollars was not much, , but It fairly dazxled Mars Seaton. He , had led n hnppyjgo-lueky existence foe over live years exploiting mining pros pects and real estate bourns, hud lived from hand to mouth and the unoxpect-1 ed legacy of what to him scorned to be a substantial sum of money brought new ambition nnd dreams of opulence. It was William Morse, an old-time partner, who had remembered him thus strangely after they had not met for ten years. The money was paid promptly to Seaton, who emerged from the threadbare vagabond Into n qulto presentable and well dressed man. "I'll make the thousand reol capital, no wasteful living It up." decided Senton. "There's ciinnoos down-In tho how oil Holds near Elmore. I'll bo careful, wary and economical until I get on my feet. And this time I'll stny there." Senton put up at a hotel at Elmore nnd began . looking around for busi ness chances. At the end of a week ho decided that 53 a day was too steoi for him." He had boon told that a widow, a Mrs. Alma Bryce, had room and board for a respectable guest who was good pay. Senton one morning walked up to her llttlo home. Ho found her absent, but her two little children were playing In the ?nrd. Handsome, hearty Mrs. Bryce came home to find tho trio tho very best friends In the world. Seaton pre sented his plea for housing, nnd clean liness and prime cooking mnde his new home a palace to him. "You are the kind of n woman I've J always pictured In my mind as pret-! ty nigh perfect," he declared one day. - One day Senton came home to find 'f& stranger seated on the porch enjoy ing its coolness and shade. "Been waiting for you, Mr. Seaton," announced the visitor crisply. "I'm named Burt Talbot and I'm a specula tor. I heard you were to be In El more nnd I wanted to have first chance -at that oil land of yours down at Herkimer Forks." "Aren't you mistaken?" Inquired Seaton. "I own no land ailywhere." "I expected that nutural for a ten derfoot to be cautions. All right, I'm square. I happen to know that a cer tain tract Is registered In the name of Mark Senton and have some partlen who might be prevailed upon to give a snug sum for it." Now Seaton was clever. Could It be possible that William Morse had added to his benefaction and Included some property? lie decided to con sult the records and llpd out. .Mean time he would be duly'polltic with his visitor. "You see," Talbot enlightened hlfii effusively, "I'm only u go-between'. Ten per cent commission Is all I'm of fered. My buyers have all the equip ment to handle your land and capital enough to stnnd a risk. Shall I 'feel my wny on n $20,000 basis, say?" "Too little," dissented Seaton. "All right, If I get your figure and thero Is a sule will you seo-that I am pnld for my services?" "Oh, sure!" acceded Seaton, and after the man had left, hurried to the record oilice. Sure enough, there was the document on file showing that over live years ago a "Mark Seaton lit Denver." had owned the property In question.' "That settles it some other Mark Seaton," soliloquized Mrs. Bryce's boarder nnd wont and played with the children to forget his shattered dream. But two days later a letter was sent to him which had been delivered at tho hotel. Seaton read It to find that It was from "Your wife, Nclla," at Denver to "Mark Seaton" of the Bnme place. It hoped that 1ier hus band would make a sale of his oil land final U ean-up nccs oiik adies V A ml White Dresses One lot of Voile Dresses, contains dresses that sold up to $8.00. Now - $495.
