"A liuly to see you. sir," spoke Susnn
Dodge, tlie old hoiifekreper; "two of
thorn In fact mother und daughter, I
think."
Professor Albion Dncro lifted hla
eyes from his hook wltli surprise, al
most donconi In his timid oyc
"If It Is a, subscription or some
thing of thnt sort, yott might attend
to It, Susnn," suggested her employer.
"I don't think It Is anything of that
kind, sir," explained .Susan.- "The
..Mm- in.lv said something about wish
ing to tnlk to you about tho young
lady."
"Vory well ; show thoni In," directed
the professor, although ho rather re- '
sotited any Intrusion uiiou his darly
loved solltudu.
"J am .Mrs. Eunice" Ward," spoke n
trained, even voice, and a matronly
appearing lady with a rellned fast of I
featups Introduced herself. "This Is
my niece, .Miss Gloria Trosham."
Professor Dacre courteously ac
knowledged tho greeting of mo elder
lady. As ho fixed his eyes upon her
coinpunlonr It seemed as though tho
latter had brought Into the staid, well
governed house the very essence of
youth, beauty, a breath of tho forest
or the sea, free, unrestrained, an In
definable spiritual something that
caused the professor to feel as If this
lovely creature was uultu of unothor
world.
Mrs. Ward was brief, concise and"
practical. "We have Just moved Into
the house diagonally back of yours,"
she said.
"Ah I then we are neighbors?" ob
served the Professor.
"My niece, Gloria," proceeded Mrs.
Ward, "has lleen brought up- for eight
een years In tho remote wilderness.
When her mother died my brother1
went into seeiusion, taking his only
child to share It. Gloria has been
brought tip among nature's solitudes.
She has had music, reading, the de
voted love of her father In her hermlt
llko seclusion, comfort, even luxuries,
but no outside companionship. When
my brother died 1 hastened to assume
her charge. Gloria Is u loving, In
nocent child, who knows nothing of
the great world. She can read, she la
a wonderful panlst and singer, but she
1ms not been taught to write u line.
Sho knows nothing of tho science ot
study. Professor' Dacre. would you
consent to take Gloria as a special
home pupil, with the Idcu of famlllur
. Ulng her with the system and methods
of acquiring learning? And later on sho
might enter upon a course In some
seminary."
It was an extraordinary concession,
to nsk of a man as occupied and as
well paid as Professor Dacre. Tho
sweet eyes of Gloria Trosham fixed up
pn him, he wns Influenced to say :
"Madam, 1 have two hours dally In
the afternoon unoccupied and usually
devoted to rest, or reading In my libra
ry, or the garden.. It will bo a duty
and a pleasure to have your niece for
a casual pupil, but please do not speak
of compensation," and n sentiment of
t ,
pity for the orphnn girl nnd a nnttiral
deslro to be helpful to others so clear-
ly spoke In the p'avo, earnest oyes.
that Gloria's own boatowed a glowing
clnnco unon him of gratitude and con-
fldence.
Within n month Albion Dacre was
lifted Into a new phase of existence.
To lilni Gloria wns nn untrained wild
row, sweet ami beautiful, who shamed
his practical worldly-wise nature In
contrast with freshness, purity nnd In-
iificiineo of a soul that had known-and
loved nature with the ardor of a child, i
Many a time the professor nurtured as ,
a dream embracing nil that was worth
while- In life, an ardent longing to
seek a now existence amid the glories
of nature In Its primeval wUdness,
away from tho drudgery and Inhar-
monlousncss of his present sphere,
1IV,II"I7..V". V. , .
communing with the flowors, tho birds, i
the stars, and lenmlng from the Hps
of his fair young pupil lessons of the
real loveliness and peace of a happy
existence, "forgetting the world and
by the world forgot 1"
"Oh. think of It I" exclnlmcd Gloria
rapturously one day. "I can write a
whole lino. See," nnd the rugged
heart of her tutor boat tumultuous-
ly as she placed bofore him a sheet
bearing tho words, "I love Aunty
Eunice and dear Professor Dncro more
than anybody olse In the whole world."
Then after that thorp seemed to
creei) Into her nature a certain shy
ness that puzzled Albion Dacre. liven
her aunt observed the change. Con
tact with the world was teaching the
artless girl that she should repress
the naive free Impulses that her life
In tho wilderness had encouraged.
One afternoon the professor came to
the tree-shaded table where Gloria
took her lessons to find her sunny head
pillowed on one arm and her lovely
eyes closed In slumber. She had been
writing In a little memorandum book ;
and he could not help but scan the
open page before him.
It held the secret thoughts of a girl j
In love herself. It artlessly analyzed i
the deep devotion thnt had grown up 1
In her heart for the man she adored !
himself. I
Suddenly Gloria a roused.. She dis
cerned thnt ho had scanned hot treas
ured confession. A deep blush over
spread the beautiful face. She has
tened to hide It against his arm,
whore she murmured softly:
"It's true, every word of ,ltl" and

Cook With Oil on Warship.
The Uood, the monster mystery bat
tleship, launched from the Clyde the
other day, Is fitted out with a large
oil-fuel cooking galley. For several
years past the use of oil fuel hns been
common In the British navy for pro
pulsion purposes, but Its employment
for cooking Is quite nn Innovation.
The galley referred to Is cnpable of1
cooking for 1,200 men. The hont Is
