MEET TO DISCUSS THK .
DRAINAGE PROPOSITION.
Members of the city council direc
tors of tho Chamber of Commerce and
other ij.tlzens met last evening to
disciiBs a drainage proposition that
would roBitU in taking care of the
water which Hows from tho west
through tho city both north and south
of the railroad tracks. The solution
of this water problem seems to bo
the construction of a drainage ditch
west of tho second ('oily Addition
running north under the railroad
track and emptying into the Irrigation
ditch at a point west of the cometory.
Tho south end of tho ditch would be
at a point on a parallel with a con
tinuation of A street. The co3t of
tU'.B ditch would not be less than
$15,000 to which would need be added
the purchase of right-of-way.
A ditch for a similar purpose was
constructed a number of years ago
and seemed to servo tho purpose dur
ing Hood times, but as those Hoods
did not occur eacli year tlio ditch was
not taken care of and eventually
drifted full of .sand and the company
filled i the culvert which had been
placod undor tho track.
Whether this ditch will lower the
water level and tond to keep out the
inflow of water into basements is a
dobatablo one, some .insisting that is
wUl, others that it will not. .It would
seem probablo that If this Hood water
from the west is kept from flowing
through the street ditches, a portion
of which undoubtedly sinks into tho
ground, it would havo some "uffect on
the water lovol.
