In the rear of tho living room Is a raised dais on which the entire family sleep, and In the front part stands the stove. This stove consists of a hollow stone tilled with seal oil In which burns a rag wick, which llghtn. and heats the house and cooks tho meals. Up to Date. At the now justly famous Jackson day dinner a number of good stories were told and the women are enjoying one told by Senator Hitchcock of No oraska apropos of tho growing influ ence of women. Chairman Motor Truck Commlttse, Nntlonnl Auto mobile Chamber of Commerce ) Motor highway transportation has grown to such vast Importance In tho past few years and lias so well dem onstrated Its value ami evncloney that It has won official public recognition In many of our states. Hut this activity can develop In u sound economic way only as good roads programs are de veloped. While there are examples where motor transportation lias suc ceeded when run in territories l hut have undeveloped roads, they, In com parison with the thousands of mo tortruck routes, tire practically negli gible. One of our greatest wastes in the handling of tho prime necessity, food, occurs In our present transportation methods. Hundreds of millions of dol lars are annually wasted because tho present method of transportation adapted to our present road system, Is so costly that It does not pay to move this fond from the farm to an area of consumption. It Is said that New York state hn ts.'ion miles of surface highways and 7!.'S miles of unimproved rural roads. While the state has a much higher per centage of improved roads tbnn Is com mon for tho United States, they do not benefit tho farmer as much as could, be desired. f Long Island is one of the most pros perous agricultural areas In New York stnte. It is not exceptionally fertile; In fact, it may he said that it Is fertile becnuse man lias mndo it so. There ore many areas In the state that are nnt urally more productive than Long Is land, but which are far less prosper ous. If you could take a trip over the Island you would know the reason why the Island fanners are famous for their product and financial Inde pendence. A well-planned, well-constructed, and finely maintained sys tem of roads Is the greatest asset tho Island has. Every evening one can seo hundreds of motortrucks, from two to live ton capacity, rolling over these roads, bound for the New York mar ket. Here Is no fiO nor -10. nor even 10 per cent waste.
