How Whales Breathe.
An eminent naturalist says concern
ing the breathing apparatus of the
whale: "The windpipe does not com
municate with the mouth ; a hole is, as
t were, bored right through the back
of tlia head. Engineers would do well
to copy the action of the valve of
i ho whale's blow-hole; a nioro per
fect piece of structure It is Impossible
to Imagine. Day and night, asleep or
, awake, tho whale works Its breathing
apparatus In such a manner that not
u drop of water ever gets down Into
the lungs. Again, the whale must of
necessity stay n much longer period
under water than seals; this alono
might possibly drown It, Inasmuch as
tlie lungs cannot have access to fresh
air. We And thnt this dllllculty has
been anticipated nnd obvlnted bj a pe
culiar reservoir In tho venous system,
which reservoir Is situated it tho
back of the lungs,"
