.4 i 1 l! 4 4 UP IN THE AIR By CECILLE LANGDON (Copyright, 1920, Western Newspaper Union) 'Tin nil up In the air!" muttered Illrnm Scrlpps In n dazed way. "Don't say thnt, neighbor," urged his friend, Robert Wnde. "Think, man, think 1 You had It once. It's got to como hack to you ngaln." "Think?" repented Hiram glndly. 'Tvu done nothing else but think ever slneo that happened," and he pointed sorrowfully toward the charred ruins of a burned down shed nt the rear of the lot. "To have the model of my great Invention working like n chnrui, to have a big capitalist offer me a for tune for It, and now nshcsl" "Cheer up, old friend," consoled Wnde. "You needn't tU me that a man of your genius mid ability won't be able to make over what you once made." , "I can, all but the little Jigger that was the soul of the whole device," re plied lllram. "It simply won't come to me, and without It the new model Is simply kindling wood. Ohl I'm not mourning the loss of a fortune. It's Miss Tlbetts I'm fretting about." "Thnt's bad. Hiram," observed Wade. "No, It's good," dissented Hlrnm with jmotion. "It's good because I've found out how much I love her, dear, sweet angel that she Is I Wade, when I hod spent the last cent of the money I got from mortgaging my place here and didn't know where to turn to get enough to finish my model, that lovely, unselfish being drew her savings out of bank, five hundred dollars, and forced It on mc to help mo out. Ohl the shame of not being nblc to pny her back will crush me. Whnt will she say or think?" "Sny? Thnt you could have more If she had It. Think? More of you than ever. It's the way of women love, pity, sacrifice. Don't fret on that score. Get your mind on something else for a while, and before you know It the little Jigger you can't remember will por Into your mind. I say, there's a circus In town. Let's stroll down to It and take a look ut things." "It won't interest me one bit," de clared Hiram. The two friends reached the vacant lot where the big white tents Invited, but Hiram was In an abstracted mood and the glowing ennvns daubs held no attraction for the unhappy Inventor. "Let her go!" came the order, and the guy ropes of n show balloon were released find the distended monster sagged nnd swayed. "HI ! out of the wny there." The yell was directed at Hlrnm. It startled him out of his preoccupation, hut he did not move quickly enough to evade a bunch of trailing ropes. One of them whipped about him, tugged, tightened, nnd he was lifted from his feet. Ho grasped nt the rope to steady himself. Then nloft he went. Wade was awed, horrified. The crowd thrilled, the balloon men on the ground shouted wildly to the operator, but up like nn arrow, fairly one hun dred feet, shot Hiram. Later, wheiA questioned ns to his unique experience, Hiram Scrlpps avowed thnt such u thing ns four nev er occurred to him. He declnred that the sensation was one of exhilarating buoyancy. His mentality seemed re leased from all natural bonds. In a flash there came to him, clear, per feet, remembrance of the part of his machine thnt he had so vainly sought to grasp. The startled balloonist turned a valve and began to descend. As Hiram's feet struck the top of a roof the rope slacked nnd ho let go of it The balloon swayed free of him, but Hiram, left without support, rolled down the roof and struck the ground with a shock. "Oh, he's killed 1" groaned Wade, ns niram lay Insensible. "Get n doctor, quick i" A pbyslcinn hnppened to be on the grounds. He hurried to the spot "A bad bump on his hend, but no bones broken," he reported. Just then Hlrnm opened his eyes. A glorious smile Illuminated his face, In another moment he relapsed Into unconsciousness, but not until he had shouted out rapturously: "A concentric shaft and two rntch ets hurrah !" "Mind gone concussion of the brain," pronounced the physician dole fully. "Get him home quick." It wns several hours later when Hiram opened his eyes. Beside his couch were two willing nurses Miss Mlrandn Tlbetts and her married sis ter. "And oh, Jnnetl" the former was sobbing, "what If his brilliant mind never recovers! And oh! I love hlra so, nnd If he was a mere beggar I would work and die for him, If nec essnry." "You sny that, you loving sweetest of all womankind I" cried out Hiram, startling the ladles by bolting upright. "Then life Is Indeed wortli living. Oh, Miranda! the golden luck. A concen tric bar and two ratchets Hurrah !" "Oh, my denr! my dear!" pleaded Miranda, breaking down utterly, "for get such wretched ravings !" "Ravings?" fairly shouted Hlrnm. "Why. thnt means thnt 1 remombor the Importnnt mechanism thnt had es enped my memory. Ur 'Jio air no longer, my darling! I can tinlsh the niodi'l now. We're rich, my sweot, and yours shall be the fortune thnt Is n&w Mireb ours, nnd myxolf In th. bargain, If you ill imve ion." HONOR CLAIMED BY WELSH Writer Asserts Natives of That Coun try Were the First White People In America. ' In nn ninnzlngly interesting old , book, published by the author, John Wllllnms, Vale street, Denbigh, Wales.-' In 1850, entitled "Ancient nnd Modern Denbigh," there nppenrs the following rare bit of Information: "In A. England had been conquered by tho Normans In the previous century, nnd tho sons of the grcnt bnrons Wllllnra tho Conqueror lind brought with him from Franco were tnklng possession by force of the conquered kingdom, as they could. They were not nlwnys successful In their little Indlvldunl wars, and a good ninny Saxon earls nnd squires hold their own ngalnst them. Especially did the Normans hnvo a had time trying to oust the nnclcnt Britons from their property In Wnles. It was not until 1283 thut Dn vld, Inst king of the old British empire, wns defeated, and King Arthur's royal crown wns taken by the Normnn-Eng-Ush, as was the Welsh relic "crocs cnydd" made of the true cross nnd In closed . When it conies to selecting the re gion of abbeys and priories in Enginnd there is but one county to think of. That county Is Yorkshire, which lias no less than 25 famous abbeys and priories within Its boundaries, several of them renowned nil over the world ns being the finest nnd most beautiful ruins and scenes one enn possibly ex pect to view in this connection. Twenty-flve. nt lenst, of these benuty spots, the ancient founders of religious houses selected In Yorkshire centuries ngo. Of course not all those 25, In their ruins and environment, are so nmnzingly beautiful nnd picturesque todny. Klrkstnll abbey, charming ns it still nppenrs In certnln ways, Is too much overshadowed by the smoke of Leeds nnd the murky, evll-smelllng wnter of the Aire. But when the old monks first came to tills nbbey, the vale whore It rested was almost surely as delightful as Fountains' wondrous scene is today I However, most of the Yorkshire nhbeys even yet retnin their pristine delightful surroundings, their fnlrylike loveliness, nnd have thus won n world-wide renown, nnd are visited by tens of thousands of folk from every qunrte'r of the globe year by year. Influence of Lunar Cycle. Physical and mental alternations are well marked In chronic Invnlids nnd In tho Insane. In the case of a sufferer from heart disease, with asthmatic symptoms, n careful record wns kept of the singuinrly regular lunnr month ly nttneks. Tho cycl'c excitement of lunntlcs has nlso been studied by phy slcinns, and In one of the investign Hons It was found thnt 40 per cent of men and 40 per cent of women In 388 asylum patients hnd definite periods of relapse. The Influence of the lunar cycle up on tho prevalence of suicide lias boon observed by several Investigators. More cheerful is the evidence thnt the phnse of the moon affects tho mhrrlage rate. Tho rhythm of the aptitude for mental attention Is a topic of great sig nificance In the conduct of life. Laundry of the Millionaire. Order is pleasant. If 1 wore n mil llonaire which I thank heaven I am not, nor scarcely a millionth part of one I should take pleasure In the silent orderliness that shadowed me through my home. Those Invisible hands that patted out the pillows nnd shlned the shoes nnd picked up every thing, even the Sunday newspapers those I should enjoy. I should enjoy especially tho guardian angel who hid from me the casualties of tho laundry nnd put the surviving laundry nwny. In henven there Is no laundry, or mending of laundry. For the million aire the laundry is sent nnd tho latin dry Is sorted nwny, blessed be the nnmo of the millionaire. I envy him little else except, perhaps, his linen sheets. New Republic.
