A LOVING RECOMPENSE By RALPH HAMILTON (Copyright, 1120, Western Nfwpnpr Union) A tramp passed by the little cottage on the hill, hurrying to shelter from the pelting snow, sniffed tho nlr redo lent nnd appetite-Inviting with n savory flavor, nnd grew hungrier than ever. The general store delivery boy. tossing Ids packngo on the rear porch, peered covetously In at a window, slightly lowered to let out the steam of cook ery, nnd saw on n table great bowls of freshly cooked doughnuts, noted Al ice Ford, aproned, Hour-covered and lovely, dipping nnd lifting out the tan tnllzlngly crisp nnd browned product of her task. Then, (lilting nbout busi ly, this queen of the kitchen nodded nnd smiled as her neighbor friend, Maud Trevor, came bustling Into the bouse. "Thought I'd run over before the drifts got too deep," she announced. "For mercy's sake I What arc you up to? Starting n bnkcry?" "Pretty nearly," smiled back Alice. "There I thnt makes twenty dozen, two hundred and forty, nnd the (lour Is nil used up," nnd Alice sat down In n chnlr, her dimpled elbows bared, with n sigh that was restful and satisfied. Maud's big eyes took In the bowls and the pans piled high with dough nuts, scenting a mystery. She know of no local function whero food do nations had been asked for. "What have you cooked all those for?" sho asked bluntly. "I promised to have them ready for Roscoo nt noon." Mnud Trevor (lushed at tho mention of Alice's brother, but exclaimed: "Is ho to cnt all of those?" "Oh, no; ho Is coming hero In his flying tnnchlne from tho forest pre serve slgnnl station. Of course you have heard about the ship caught In tho Ice eight miles out In tho lake?" And then, as Mnud nodded affirmative ly: "It's held fast among the floes nnd can't budge, nnd between It nnd the shore It's a foaming field of loose cakes. They couldn't reach It by tug or patrol boat, and tho crew wigwag ged tho water tower yesterday for help) There's a friend of Roscoo's named Ralph Wharton aboard, and for that reason and because the crew may bo suffering from want of food, Roscoo telephoned that ho was coming to tho rescue. The town has got ready a lot of fresh and salt meat, flour, sugar, milk nnd butter ,nnd Roscoe suggested thnt I contribute n hag of my famous doughnuts, ns he calls them." "I guess I'll stay and help you pack them," suggested Mnud, her mind on Roscoo. "Isn't It n risk trying to get tho nlrplano aboard of that ship?" "Oh. Roscoe won't do that," replied Alice. "lie couldn't make a landing. His idea Is to circle above tho ship nnd drop the pnekages on Its deck." Maud had been titivating herself ,nt Allco's mirror, and wns fluttering with eagerness ns the young aeronaut nppaared shortly nftcr noon. lie had n kiss for his sister and n sugges tive hand clasp for Maud. "I've load ed tho supplies down whero I lnnded," ho explained. "You've got a lot of them, hnven't you?" as ho noted the two pillow cases filled nnd tied, nnd helped himself to some samples from n plate. It was nearly evening when Roscoo returned from his aerial trip, watched Into the vngue distance nnd the way back by half the population of tho town. The details of his venture were soon popularly known. lie had nr rnnged to remnln nt home for n spell, Ills mechnnlc tnklng tho airplane back to Its starting point; much to the do light of Mnud. "Tho meats donated I nnd in! nil right on the deck of the ship," reported Ros coe, "but a crate of eggs fell Into the water and wns crushed by tho Ice." "And my doughnutB?" Inquired Alice anxiously. "Thoy fell right among tho passen gers nnd crew, and there was a great scramble. The crowd stood munching nt tho delicious dainties until I left. The ship Is caught between two lm pense (Iocs nnd can't budgo until tho wind chnnges." It wns tho next afternoon when Ros coo came homo from down town. "The ship got to port here," he nnnounccd, "nnd tho passengers nnd crow nre cel ebrating their rescue. They've got norns nnd n drum, nnti they are serenading the butcher, tho baker nnd tho candlestick maker, who treated them so generously, and thnso dough nuts, Alice l They'll bo hero soon." "Here they comol" erred tho excited Mnud, as blares and booms rent the nlr, nnd n few minutes later, In pro cession, there came marching down the street n merry, mired group. Ralph Wltfirton wuh profuso In his praise nnent the delicious doughnuts, nnd persisted in wenrlng his souvenir, Tho double pair passed a delightful evening, nnd young Whnrton was In vlted to remain as a guest until tho ship was repaired. It took two weeks to do that, and Wharton was glnd, and bo was Alice. Tho last evening of his stny, Alice, by request, mndo some of tho now doubly fnmous doughnuts. "I'm going to take my souvenir to my mother," observed Ralph, "and ask her if Bho didn't think a young lady who can produco such perfection Is worthy of tho deepest remembrance." "And then?" questioned Alice nrcbly. ' "Why, then I'm going to comp back and aBk your mother if I can havo tho maker oC the snmo provided you arc Willing." DIDN'T FEAZE THE PROFESSOR Snake Expert Got Out of Rather Tight I Fix In a Somewhat Clever Manner. ! rhere Is a certain professor of nat- urnl history who delights In propound- lug rnteh questions to his class, nnd , one young fellow, who had boon caught by one. determined to get even. At the next dims, therefore, he said gravely: "Professor, you hnve mndo a special study of snnkoH, hnve you not?" "Yes, I think I am fnlrly well In formed ns to that branch," the profes sor responded. "Then, professor, you can undoubt dly Inform mo on n point which, while doubtless simple, puzzles me. May I nsk you n question?" The professor iicgnn to fool uneasy, but there was nothing to reply but yes." "Then. sir. whnt I desire to know Is, whero does n snuke's tall begin?" the young fellow n sited gravely. The professor was silent for n mo ment, nnd n titter began to run over tho room, which Increased to a roar as io professor replied calmly: "That is quite simple; It begins nt the end of tho snake which Is not the bend." An aero squadron, preparatory to ho start for the front, wns being Initiated again Into the mysteries of close-order drill. While most of the men knew every nut, bolt nnd square Inch of canvas on the planes, they were more than hazy about the forgotten details of their apprentice ship days In the army. "Squads right!" bellowed the com manding officer. The mnjoiity of the squadron man aged to get there somehow or other, but No, a, rear rank, fourth .squad, was totnlly lost. He maneuvered nlmlessly nbout the field for a time. trying to find his place, and finally walked Into the nrms of the enp- tnln. "Here, you, where do you belong? Whnt's your number?"
