    THE HAND

Br AUGUSTUS G. SHERWlN
A FREAK OF
FORTUNE
By CECILLE LANGDON
(Copright, Hit, Weitern Nwppr Union)
Trotty Rltn Fowler shook her finger
In playful warning nnd censure as
a croup of schoolboys halted, each ono
armed with n dozen or more snow
balls. Ono side of the house roof had
pendant from thn oaves n glittering
arrny of Icicles. They formed grilles,
festoons, canopies, thick spirals, a tar
get nrray bringing delight to the de
structive Juvcnllo soul.
It was tho clattering of flying broken
particles of the icy pendants against
tho panes that brought Rltn to tho win
dow. Immediately tho lads scampered
nway, but not until they had bulked
a collectlvo fURlllndo dn tho great
hanging bulk which had attached It
self to the caves trough pipe, and, fed
by constantly congealed drippings, hud
acquired a formidable volume.
If Rita's heart had not been bub
bling over with happiness and Joy, sho
would have gone out, havp obtained a
clothes pole nnd disconnected the men
acing monster of Ice. So much was
thero to do about the home, however,
and so engrossed was sho In viewing
the engagement ring on her linger and
In thinking of its donor, Wade Burton,
that sho forgot all else for the time
being. It was getting on toward dusk,
and nt seven o'clock her mother and
sister would be home, needing a llttlo
snack, after a long, cold walk. Then,
too, an hour Inter Wade would drop
In to sec how tho fiance of 21 hours
wns getting along.
Rita bustled about, and when sho
went Into tho cozy living room where
a cheerful firp was blazing In tho grate
nnd sentcd horself on tho rug with a
small pastcbonrd box which contained
photographs of denr friends, notes,
letters, bcrlbboned mementoes, and ono
by one she tool: them up In half sad,
half smiling reverie, reviewing tlio
memories they suggested. Some sho
saved. All those that nppllcd to close
boy friends and later suitors Rltn cast
into the flames. Sho shuddered as
she took up n package of letters on
tho top of which was tho photogrnph
of a sinister-eyed, bold-looking young
man. It was labeled "Ralph Tru
dalo." With a nervous movement she thrust
tho package out of reach and It was
quickly consumed.
Ralph Trudnlol Tho nnmo thrilled
her with somber memories. She hud
never Ukpd him, but because he was
tho brother of an old girl friend sho
had tolerated him. Ills headstrong, but
unsuccessful wooing had been brief.
Ho had been arrested for forgery and
sentenced to pennl servitude. Only
twice a year hntl Itlta heard from him,
through letters written to her from his
prison coll. They hrenthed love, but
vengeance, too; and ho told her with
emphasis that she should yet bo his.
Trying to forgot hla fierce, unworthy
acquaintance of hc past, Rltn abruptly
started and glanced at tho window.
Outside, Ids fnco pressed close to tho
pane, was n man. In a flashing in
stnnt she recognized her old persecu
tor an esenped convict Ralph Trudalol
Ho vanished as she sprang to her
feet. A great terror possessed her.
Sho ran to the corner of the room and
snatched up the telephono receiver. No
signal wns given, and Rita know that
tho wlro outside had been severed. Tho
next moment Trudnle crashed In tho
sldo door and wns in tho room, and
past him In tho yard roudwny Rita
mado out an autamobllo with Its
lights lowered.
"I have como nt n risk, nnd 1 must
loavo quick," spoko Trudalo, his eyes
gleaming with a settled purpose. "And
you go with me. A now lover, eh? and

Will bu placed with a woman friend at
a distance. Then I give you a week
to consent to n marriage, or I will
kill you, and myself, us well. I am
n desperate man,nnd I mean every word
I say."
Tho Intruder snatched up n clonk
nnd threw It over tho head of the
shrieking, appealing Ultn. Sho was
prostrated by bis threats nnd her re
sistance was weak and futile ns ho en
circled her arms and body with ntiiout
silken cord.
"Ono minute,' and 1 will be back to
carry you to tho automobile," spoko
Trudalo rapidly. "No outcry, or I will
gag you."
Paralyzed with terror, Rltn sat In
tho chair he had thrust her Into, help
less. She noted him glldo through the
doorway. Then there was u strange,
tearing sound, a heavy thud, a crash, a
muflled shriek, a groan, nnd then nil
wna still as Itlta sank into n swoon.
Bho'canio back to consciousness to
find her mother nnd sister and Wado
Burton bending over her. Her bonds
bad been released. Sho struggled wild
ly to her feet
"Oh, that horrlblo maul" she pant

pened?"
"Oomo and see," said her lovor, lend
ing her to tho doorway, and Rltn, gaz

tho corner of tho house- her dread vis

It was an Ideal home of the olden

The place occupied tho areu of a full

Its owner, John Marshall, clung to
the house where he wns born. Tho

Its residential environment was obso

She wns the daughter of his oldest,
best beloved friend, whose death had
left Edna orphaned. She wns eight
years old then. Ho hnd practically

And now, at the end of thoso years,
John Marshall had come Into the hlgl:

Ednn sat with her flance, Barry

"I wonder If you two would mind
If I took up your time telling you of

Edna Immediately moved over to
tho sldo of tho old man and took his
hand In a loving clasp. Her lover as
