    ROADSTERS
TWO
By DOROTHY DOUGLAS
(0, 1920. by McClure Newppcr Syndicate.)
Helen Moore hnd broknn the speed
limit, successfully, on her wny out
to lior father's country homo nt Great
Neck. Her little rondster lind enten
up (lie miles us If famishing until they
were ull consumed.
Helen hnd Invited n largo number
of friends, on the spur of the mo
ment, for u week-end party, and there
was sennt times to provision the
closed homo before tho first guest
should arrive. They would all motor
out from the city and would get n
mlghly cold reception unless she hur
ried a bit.
Arriving at Great Neck, Helen
drew tip at the butcher's, and her
purchases put, as usual, In her car,
she went with them to tho grocery
shop to make another order.
Her little roadster swung against
the curb a few yards beyond tho
door. A delivery wagon was directly
in front, so Helen took the next best
position.
Tnsldo the shop sho mndc her large
order.
"Just put them In tho car," she
told the grocery boy.
"Tho roadster?" questioned the
boy, as, laden with the huge box,
he obeyed orders.
A nod and a smile answered him, and
Helen then turned to write a check in
payment
It was a scant five minutes before
sho emerged ready for tho final spin
that would lead her, well-stocked with
food for the inner man, up to the big
driveway to her country home.
nelen sent a swift glance Into the
car, to make sure her big box was
safely there.
There was no box 1 And the hoy had
returned empty-handed to tho store
beforo she had finished making out
her check. She hastened back to de
mand of the grocer the whereabouts
of her order.
"I put It In the roadster," said the
hoy, and accompanied Helen to tho
door. There his henrt gnvo u nasty
turn. There must have been two sim
ilar cars by tho curb and he had placed
tho groceries in tho wrong car.
Helen grasped the facts Immediately,
and scanned tho main street for the
other roadster. If It were In sight It
would bo quicker to follow and get
her box, rather than wnlt until a du
plicate order was made up.
"That's probably tho car turning the
bend," sho decided, and swiftly Jumped
Into her seat. Being In a tremendous
hurry, nnd trying to follow tho direc
tion of that fast disappearing car,
Helen did all tho wrong things. She
flung Into roverso gear, stnllod her en
glnc, almost banged head-on Into tho
one trolley In sight, nnd finally got
nway.
Sho sped nfter tho receding car
ns If sho longed to kill every Inhabi
tant of Great Neck. It seemed often
as If fortune wero fnvorjng that oth
er car, for when Helen seemed about
to spring alongsido It sho Invariably
had to slacken for a truck or tho sud
. den nppearanco of a child In tho road
way. Wrath wns gathering In her eyes
and' her cheeks were scarlet n-lth cx
cltcmqnt. Had sho not been flic
daughter aof a well-known towns
man Holt undoubtedly would hnve
Bcreamed t tho occupant of that
twin roudste. to stop and give her
her groceries. Time was getting
shorter, and sho realized that her
guests would be cooling Impatient
heels on her mnsslvo stono doorstep.
Tho man, for It wns n man In gray
tweed cap pulled well over his oyes,
wns oblivious to tho fact that ho was
being angrily followed.
But suddenly be turned off n long
bit of clear road, and In another sec
ond It would hnve seemed ns If tho
Vnnderbllt cup race was on, for tho
two cars careened along that high
way as If In hot pursuit of a whirl
wind. It wns then that tho man
know ho was being watched, hut
merely ns the occupant of one speedy
car trying ui pass uio oilier.
They went hood to hood until
iiuum wiu iiuiBii ui v. i cm nnui. 11
wns then that the tweed cap driver
saw that his opponent wns n girl.
Ho had not made tho observation be
fore, being well content with trying
the full capacity ot his engine's power
TJrtw wltli tT-mt rrnnrlnmnnlv fnnf
Now, with truo gentlemanly tnct
ho shut off gas, slowed almost Imper
ceptibly, nnd let tho girl drive well
pnst him. Ho fell to wondering then
If ho hnd been racing with a mad
vfomnn, for sho wns turning straight
in the roadway so that n collision
was only averted by swift Intelligent
uso of tho brake and steering wheel.
Tho sudden stop flung Davis with
n bang against his wheel, It wns then
that he heartily gave vent to nn ex
prcsslon not finttcrlng to woman drlv
em.
"You have my groceries I" tho an
gry sentence flashed from ono car to
tho other,
Davis stared at tho flaming cheeks
and' brilliant eyes of his stormy accu
ser, then dragging reluctant eyes
uwnyiio glanced down ' o his car.
Then he did tlm mot unpardona
ble thing ho had so fur done. He
laughed uproariously.
''Helen Mqoro wns furious.
Wwiiltnueously both engines were
shut ff ns If to pave tho wny for a
conversation under lest strenuous
clrcuinBtiineos. Having quiet now at
their command It was Davis who
spoke next.
"Wlint makes you think I huvo
your property In my car? My house
keeper was In the village making an
order and was going to put the box
In here with me."
Helen sank buck a trifle appeased,
for In her heart she knew the
man was In no wny responsible for)
her predicament yet sho could not
help a glow .pf anger. He might !
have looked to see If tho box was
his boforc dashing off like a tornado
WUI, it '
This' much she told him beforo
even ns much ns a ghost of a smile
wns permitted to dawn about her
lips.
"Then where are my groceries?"
demanded Davis, as If Helen were re
sponsible for their loss. "I hnve n
gang walling at the house now for
food."
"I suppose yours nrc back In the
shop," x Helen suggested. "If you
don't mind, I would like that box
my guests will have gone back to
town If I don't get hack soon."
"That lets me out of getting over
to Kmnllwoods' to arrange for the
muslclnns I wanted for tomorrow
night." Dnvls was n bit peevish
himself now, and Helen's tone became
wonderfully soft.
"I'm so sorry," she said, "but I
have already engaged those musicians
for my dance tomorrow night" She
wns watching Davis now bb ho removed
the box of groceries from one rondster
to tho other, and as sho watched him
her Inlerest grew. Ho was the type
of mnn that any womanly girl would
like, and like very much.
"Those coons I And they are the
best on Long Islnnd. It wns because
of them I got my bunch out here," la
mented Davis. "Those men could make
a motorcar dance. Well you got them
first." Ho wns standing close to Helen
now, nfter having deposited tho box
safely In Its rightful place. "I nm
sorry you had to chase your groceries,
but I was really not to blame wns I?"
He waited his answer, and Helen knew
he would wait until ho got It. ne was
that type of man.
"Not In the leust," she quickly told
him, nnd did not regret tho color that
crept Into her cheeks. It told him so
plainly thnt she rather liked him. Then
Impetuously, she added : "I wonder If
It would be awfully unconventional If
I wero to ask all your" house party
over tomorrow night to Join our
dnnco? It is really n pity not to all
enjoy thoso musicians Isn't It?"
Davis smiled swiftly nnd with un
mistakable Joy.
"By Jove I Thnt's great of you."
Then quickly, and with direct meaning,
he added: "And does thnt mean that
my party enn dance with your party,
and"
"In other words," laughed Helen,
"you mean, will I dance with you
Isn't that It?';
"I would say It was," admitted Dav
is frankly.
And as Helen started tho motor of
the little red rondster that wns twin
to that other one: "I am so glad tho
grocery boy made a mistake."
And then began that other rnct tho
ono on the rond to love.
