Governor Smith said nt a dinner In Albany: "Tho opponents of female suffrage take a Jaundiced view of things. They are like old Batch. "'I see that Jones has married his cook,' a man said to Batch, at the club. '"Humps. That's Just like Jones,' Batch snorted. 'Ilc'd always rather fight than cat.' " III and Nervous. Nurses dislike the season of thun derstorms. "We are not afraid of lightning ourselves," a nurse lu a woman's hospital told me, "but It has a harmful effect on the patients. Most sick people fear lightning. In cases of extreme weakness or nervousness a dozen Hashes of blinding lightning re duce the patient to a state of utter prostration." Fitting. "O Happy Day" sang the laundress os she hung the snowy wash on tho line. It was a "happy day" because aho used Ited Cross Ball Blue. You will always have money If you save half your earnings. President Yllson,s cabinet split wide open on the followlug question : Was Captain Mntlack Justlllcd In bentlng the Mexican bandits out of $0,500 of the, ransom for tho two army aviators? With the professors of ethics who supervised military mor imo'ti n? frrm 3ANGHE fcS-tev WRONG., .7 to break a promlso nuulo even to n criminal. Another group contends that tho breaking of a promise mnde under duress is justifiable. Then there is a utllltnrlnn school of thought maintaining that the bargain ought to have been carried out Implicitly becauso the impairment of our reputation with the bnndlts for good fnith may embarrass future negotiations to ransom our citizens. The Mexlcnn border's contribution to the controversy was that General Dlckman wns seeking wuys and means to pay ttie remainder of the ransom to the bandits. The sportsman, who hns a nice sense of honor In disputed questions of this kind, will unhesitatingly say that General Dlckmnn Is right. The average American will probably say: "I'ny the bandits tho money and then shoot 'em." Yankee Saleswomen to Sell HE Amerlcnn women's chamber of commerce, tho first organization of Its kind having natlonnl nnd International scope. Is tr.vlnjr to do 'these thlncs: Prevent compulsory physical examination of American school teachers by mnn surgeons; extend through the Southwest and middle West a truck delivery of fresh vegetables, eggs, milk nnd other farm products, with girl drivers In charge of the truqks; pop ularize American lingerie nnd toilet articles among tho sultan's daughters, and populnrlze American shoes among the women of China. Mrs. Kntherine Clemmons Gould, n founder and past president of the organization, who recently returned from a business trip to China, tells all about It. First attention is to be paid to the Smith-Towner senate bill for physical examination of women teachers. The chamber will Insist that the examiners be women. And, while they are on the subject of teachers, the women of the chnmber of commerce will fight to obtain for them a higher rate of pay. "We first had to educate tho women of Chinn," said Mrs. Gould, "who formerly believed that it was sinful to permit their feet to develop nnturally. In many Chinese cities wo have persuaded merchants to handle Amerlcnn rnadc shoes for women, and as the Chinese women gradually adopt the west ern custom n great field for the American sTioe Industry will be opened." Saleswomen hnve been sent to Turkey with a line of toilet articles and apparel nnd have had tremendous success. Mere men, she explained, cannot even approach the feminine Turkish customer. Navy Aviators Fight A.VY aviators are against the proposal to concentrate the air service of the army, navy, postofllce nnd const and forest fire patrols under a single executive, probably a new cabinet member: Differing kinds of service, with special qualifications for each, make A a luntlc squadron, department of navy fl(? y aeronautics. oJ L oA -'XTiJ Captain Steele and the Shawmut . SJSSCVi NNTik ,ire now Ilt Newport, It. I. Previous to Its assignment there the boat was a mine sweeper on the Irish sen, but returned to American waters In time to handle the testing of the navy airships prior to their transatlantic flights, and Inter In Lisbon, where they landed. "There are reports," snys Captain Steele, "that tho proposed congressional legislation to consolidate the nlr services will provide for a separate cabinet olllcer as head of the department of aviation, nnd others that say the head of the aviation department will merely bo a chief, such as tho various bureaus of the army and navy have. "Either of these plans, or any other plans which take aviation for the navy out of complete-control of the navy department will mean the service will suffer, nnd such legislation should bo opposed. "A navy flyer has to know how to navigate, either from tho flimsy cockpit of an airship or from tho bridge of a vessel. He has to know how to do navy scouting, bombing and torpedoing, coast patrol work, and flnully the spotting of shots and regulation of nnvy Are." Captain Steel's conclusion is thnt tho army aviator cannot know the difficulties of the navy flying game and it takes him yeurs to learn his own. BETTER TO KEEP GOOD BULLS Farmer Sold Registered Holsteln for $50 That Afterwards Proved to Be Worth $5,000. (Prepared by tho United States Depart ment of Agriculture.) When a certain farmer a few years ago sold his registered Holsteln bull to his local butcher no records had been mnde by any of the bull's daughters. Within a year 11 of the daughters freshened at the ages of two and three. Itccords were then made of milk and butterfat produc tion, nnd to the astonishment of every body the average milk production wns 14,502 pounds and tho nvcrnge butter fat production was 573 pounds. But before these records were avail able the bull was dead and his hldo had become leather. Because there were no records, a $5,000 bull had been sold for $50. The cow-testing association tests the dnms nnd daugh ters, and the bull association makes High-Class Purebred Dull. It pniotlcnble to keep a bull until his dnugliters have been tested. Theso two associations would havo saved that hull. Itegistratlon alone ennnot guaran tee production. Itegistered dairy bulls should bo backed by good pro duction records. Without record backing they niny be very well bred, but there Is nothing to prove It. COVERING FOR CREAM CANS Great Part of Value Is Lost if Product Is Exposed to Sun While Be ing Hauled. A prent part of the vnluo of keep ing cri'iim cool on the farm and at tho station or creamery is lost If tho cream Is exposed to the direct rays of the sun while being hauled from th'e farm to the point of sale. Ear too few peoplo stop io realize the lmportnnce of cov ering their cream cans when bringing them to town. Expensive Jacketed cans nre not a necessity to keep tho cream cool. In summer weather just an ordinary piece of wet burlap thrown over runs will keep the temperature of the cream as much us 20 degrees below what it would rlso to If left un covered while being transported over the iiNerugo hauling distance. DRYING UP COWS NEGLECTED Some Animals Inclined to Keep Up Heavy Milk Flow Until Calving Time Care Is Needed. Some cows aro Inclined to keep up the heavy milk flow until cnlvlng time, and the dairyman Is apt to neg lect drying them up. Some cows dry themselves whllo others must be dried up l the milker. Care must bo taken or I lie udder will be injured. The best practice Is to cut off tho grain feed, giving no grain at all, and In some cases giving less of other feeds. Tho cow should bo milked only onco a day for u few days, and then tho period lengthened until only onco In four or flvo duys. This should bo kept up until tho flow has entirely ceased. c a package c a package 5 c a package THE FLAVOR LASTS SO DOES THE PRICE! The Cult of Fashion.
