Hosier nnd Secretary Miss Sarah Kelly entertained at a re ception Snturday aftornoon from: three to five o'olock at tho Elks' home, ' tho u of which had' been tendered I those war workers. This reception was an appreciation of the willing and , efficient service rendered by the seven companies during tho fourteen mouths tho canteen has been In oporatlon. The rooms wore profusely decorated with i garden flowers as wore also the tables' which wero arranged In the form of a cross. During tho afternoon a letter from Gardner Morris, Director of Bureau of Canteen Sorvico for tho Central Di vision dated at Chicago, September 18th, addressed to Commandant Mrs. Jlogue'wns read, am from this letter the following excerpt is taken: "You and your committee arc to bo' congratulated, and I wish I wore ablo to sufficiently thank you for the) the splendid work that has been car- rled on by the canteen workers. They have dono such splendid work from the start, and it has always been a great comfort to this office to feel that all troop movements over tho Union Pacific would receive canteen service at North Platto. Repeatedly wo have been told of how wonderful the servico was there and how hearty the welcome extended to all our boys as they passed through." Gardner Morris did not dictate this compliment to tho North Platte Can teen unadvisedly, for at the end of each month there was sent him a re port of tho work of the Canteen, and from this ho learned what tho mem bers wero doing. Had Gardner Morris dally visited tho depot on the arrival of trains, us 1ms this writer, nnd seen how solicltious tho Canteen workers wore for the welfare of the soldier anil sailor boy,s in transit; how the boys Wero met' with a smile as they stenneJ from, .the . ralnand, directed "to tho Canteen;; how 'courtc.quslyvthey were received as they entered; 'iow they wero sp nicely and so quickly server! J had sqen tho dark skinned Etheopla and the copper colored Asiatic re ceive the same treatment as others the uniform being the passport for courtesy; had witnessed the caro giv en the boy who was sick or wounded; had seen these white garbed women carry Into the cars lunches for men who were unnblo to leave tho car; had watched these same women day, in and day out report nt 7:30 in the morning and romaln on consecutive duty until ten or olevon or some times one o'clock at night; had Gard ner Morris personally seen nil these things, tho estimate of worth ho has placed upon tho North Platto A. R. C Canteen would even bo greater. The North Plntte A. R. C. Cantoen opened Its services July 13, 1918, af ter having been authorized so to do by tho division director. Prior to thu opening the executive committee of tho Lincoln County Red Cross Chapter rocommonded the appointment of Mra. Bogue as commandant; this recom- mondatlon being made for the reason that she was the first, or among tho first, to suggest tho canteen sorvico and that she possessed the enthusi asm and capability. Mrs. Boguo was' given authority to organizethe worki and she selected as her assistant Mrs ! Hosier, and Miss Kelly as secretary i Seven companies of ten members each1 woro organized, with Mrs. Walter Kockon, Mrs. O. E. Cool, Mrs. Callh ' Davidson, Mrs. Edmond Dlckey Mrs M. E. Scott, Mrs. York Hlnman nndi Mrs. W. J. Tiley as captains. Mr Kockon later removed from tho cltv. and was succeeded by Mrs. Ray C Langford. With but three or four exceptions the personnel of cadi company has remained unchango'l during tho fourteon months. Tho uao of the Union Pacific building formerly used as offices for tralnmnster, dl patchers and tolegraphors, was given ( by the compnny officials. A well appointed kltchon was insUl' ed, n- dining room furnlshod, a sick ward fitted up, and ft lounging and ontortninmont room furnished with a plno and other requlsltos for comfort nnd amusement. Here the boy,s wore fed, tnkon care of if sick, nnd if dis heartened cheorod by tho kindly wol como and sincere expressions of inter est in their welfare. Among tho 113, 000 boys to whom canteen sorvico was oxtonded during tho fourteen months, there Were many, that woro homesick, and one can well imagine how thoy appreciated tho kindly ministrations of these women whoso pleasure wan to sorvo und servo well. To tho credit of thoao seventy wo men it can truthfully bo said that they worked In complete unison; titers woro no Jenlouslos, ho blckorlngs, no strife: no army on tho field moved with more precision; tho compnny members were loyal to their captains, the captains to tho commandant nn.i her assistant and to this writer the corirmandant has frequently expressed her appreciation of the loyalty, tho willingness and the enthusiasm of ev ery member of her "army."
