Nebraska Towns arc Paving.
Alliance lias lot tho contract to
Spraguo & Nicely, of Beatrice, for pav
ing ilftoon blocks at a cost of $17G,-
000
Broken Bow has instituted a paving i
program that Includes one hundred
and forty, blocks, twenty or thirty
blocks to bo paved next spring, and an
equal numbor each year following.
Bids will bo oponed In Cen'ral City
today for paving district tto. G, tho
work In flvo districts having been
completed.
At tho last meeting of tho city
council of Itod Cloud, a contract was
awarded for thirty-eight blocks of
paving, thirty-four of which are In tho
residence district.
Tho llttlo town of Kimball will
soon advortlso for tho construction of
paving that will cover the busluoss
district and a number of the residence
streots.
Down at Kearney tho thirty-eighth
paving district has been formed. It
Is tho Intention of tho residents of
that city to pavo every Btreot In tho
town.
Grand Island has let the contract
for a largo amount of paving to bo
complotod this year.
Paving in eight now districts in
Hastings has boon let to tho Hugh
Murphy Construction Co., of Omaha.
Utucr town mat aro coim.ioung u'K
paving contracts aro Albion, Wnhoo,
and Norfolk.
Tho abovo Is published Just to show
that Nebraska towns aro not delay
laying their paving "until labor and
material gets cheap," as has been
dono in North Platte. This city Is a
very strongly unionized town; do
our union mou favor cheaper labor?
Aro they in favor of pounding down
tho wages of tho man who works In
tho brickyard, in tho cement mill or
who handles tho brick and concreto In
tho construction of tho pavemcnt7
Certainly North Platto union men aro
not so solllsh as to demand Dig wages
for themselves and yet favor tho cut
ting down of tho wages of other me
chanics or laborers.
If North Platte is to maintain its
present prosperous condition It must
bo up and coming as aro other Ne
braska towns. Preliminary propara
tlons should bo made this, wlntor for
paving at least fifty blocks next year,
and not wait for cheap , labor ana
cheap material. Wo don't, want cheap
labor, and wo can't got cheP materi
al unless thcro Is cheap labor.
