Announces his discharge from roilit

It wns in li ipirlnl Rome that I had
first met Rafael Urose. 1 wns then of
the artist c 'immunity nnd Ids plensnnt
ways and love of pictures hnd com
mended hlin to every mombor of our
Uohcmlnn group. He was wont to
innko the round of the studios, an en
couraging visitor nnd oft (hips a pa
tron.' Onci or twlco he brought with
him his sNter, Teresn. Slio was then
bnrely sixteen and the most beautiful
being I had ever met. She nnd I wore
fast drifting from mutual friendship
Into something moro fervent when sud
denly both brother and slStOr disappeared.
It was an old nntlve sculptor who
solved the mystery of their, vanish
ment. , It seemed tlint tho Broscs wore
the Inheritors' of n deadly Vcjulettn
Which hnd pursued the fnmlly until
four of Its members foil victims to tho
stiletto.
"The last living relatlvo of Rafael
lied to America to savo' his llfo five
years ago." explained my lnfornmnt.
"I heard that ho had died there. Por
hops he 1ms loft hts fortune to Rafael
find Ids nlpte."
Tlio 'memory of the beauty nnd gen
tleness of Teresa did i.ot leavo me,
even nfter I hnd returned to my home
ln,"n western city, hut I learned noth
ing of their whereabouts until nbout a
year later. I had entered a city res
taurant ono day and just ns I seated
myself nt n table from the next there
arose n young man and n veiled lady.
Tho former wore a beard, the latter
colored glasses, but I knew them at
once.
"Rnfnol. my denr friend 1" I exuber
ated, rushing up to him nnd seizing Ids
nrnf In a transport. In n flash he
turned, cast a sweeping glance over
tho crowded room nnd said hurriedly:
"Not that name In public. Follow
ns it casually until we get ciear ot
this place." '
I handed Rafnol my card. "Tonight,"
lie said in u low, cautious tone. "And
it mny he late." .
"At tiny hour; I shall bo waiting up
for you." I replied, land they hurried
away, Teresa with ir slight responsive
movemtjjit of her linnd.
it was alter miunigni wuen onise
tapped at the door of my studio. He
lingered nt the threshold for u mo
ment or two,- peering shnrply down the
street stairway as though fenrful of
being followed.
It was a strange story thnt Rnfnel
told me. For tho sake of his sister lie
hnd fled from Ids native land to evade
tho desperate mennce of tho vendetta
thnt hnd been sworn against them. Ills
uncle had died, bequeathing nil he
"owned to them, but it wns in a shape
where slow liquidation would be nee
essnry. ,
Ills dealings had been mainly with a
large number of foreigners. Rafael
had taken up his abode and that of his
sister In the poor quarter of fBe city
where his uncle hnd lived, assumed n
new nnme and pretended to be tho at
torney for heirs abroad. Piece by
plcct hut unostentatiously, he had
been, selling off the property.
"About ,u month ago," he told mo, "I
received h black-hnnd letter demand
ing a largo sum or death would follow.
Some one of my enemies abroad, or a
meal blackmailer hns guessed my true
identity. With fervent haste I nin
closing up my business, then to seek a
new homo under less hazardous con
ditions,. I hope within a week to close
out all' my business and then we enn
welcome-, you ns the esteemed friend
that you ''are."
It was one evening, a month later,
when my landlady enme rushing to
my, room In n state of frantic exclte
meh. "Oh, sir !" she quavered, "a gen
tlemnn all blackened and burned is in
a taxi below and n lady with him,
fainted or dead!" I ran down to the
street. Rafael Indeed looked as though
ho had gono through some terrific ex-
ni'Wnneo. Ho bore ids sister in his
arms.
"Give us shelter," ho spoke. "She
hiU3 only fainted from fright. The
Mnek hand dvnnmited our house, but
I escaped with a few bruises."
My landlady took charge of Teresa.
When she had been carried to her
room Itnfnel sat in my apartment tell
ing of the vindictive efforts of his per
secutors.
''I urn through with It nil, however,"
he snld, almost gaily, "as all the old
business has been settled," nnd so we
sat discussing our plans for a pleasant
iomo on the const, for a renewal of
our old close friendship.
There wns a tap at the door. A gen
tlo voice spoke. It belonged to Teresa.
"Mny I come In?"
I stood spellbound. Thero wns my
old-tlmo love, now vellloss. Thore wns
the old-time beauty, unmarred. To
drive away rude and unwelcome visit
ors she had disfigured her fnco with
pigments and stains. Now her peer
less beauty shone forth, nnd, too, in
those expressive eyes, divested of
glasses, thero gleamed tho old radiant
light thnt told thnt she still loved me.
Thero lsj no echo of tho dark past
for Rafuol Broso now, for his peerless
sister Is my wife. In a beautiful homo
looking down from vlnc-qlnd hills upon
tho plncld ocean, I at my easel, Rnfaol
