Mr. Welborn Is an engineer and at tho time of the attempted burglary! was out on the road. Through the many housebreakings which havo oc-l curred. Mr. Welborn was aroused to a Bense of protection for his wife! during his absence, and had perfect-! cd a system of burglar alarms. It was through this alarm that Mrs. Welborn was awakened about four o clock, and grasping a revolver she went forth to meet tho Invader. As she looked Into an adjoining room sho discerned tho form of a man in the act of crawling through a window. She raised the re volver and flred, but the shot went a mlss, and tho man dropped back to tho ground and beat a hasty retreat. ::o:: The Gregg Shorthand has been adopted by the board of education for uso in the beginning classes during tho coming year' and in all classes af ter this year. The class which start ed in the Pitman system will be con tinued, the coming year so that all students may finish the course without loss. The Gregg system is said to be a little easier to learn and equally as efficient as tho Pitman. Mrs. Robeson N lias qualified as a teacher of Gregg and "will carry the classes in both systems.- This department of tho High School has made a good record and the high standard will be maintained Tiy this change. Tho corps includes about sixty vohlcles of various kinds and about 250 men, and therefore quite a big tract of ground is re quired for parking the cars and erecting tho touts. A committee will bo appointed to drive east to Gothenburg or somo oth er point to meet the transport and to extend a welcome from tho people of North Platte. Burrow9, who was up from Walker -precinct yesterday, said that farmers in that section of the county had about finished cutting wheat. Sorenson receiv ed word yesterday that their son Har vey had landed nt Newport News from overseas service. Tho battery for the Methodists was Plttman and Adams and Johnson and Sandail for the Lutherans. In this gumo Louis Johnson, In sliding to second, dislo cated a knee, and Sandail was hit in tho eyo by a thown ball.
