Wm. il. C. WOODHURST, 0l3 County Judge. (Copyright, mt, Wesurn Nvwupuptr t nlon "1 saw It first 1" shouted Robert Lch lie. "And I heard It tlrstl" roared his brother, Martin. "Why, what's your Idea?" Jeered tho first speaker. "Suddenly taken a liking to huuinnlty, that you want to grab u poor little abandoned skit of a thing, ufter " There Robert Leslie paused. An acute expression In his brother's face checked him. He was sorry, for he realized that he had made a bad break. There had been n passage in both their lives where anger hud led to Injustice nnd this, iu turn, to sorrow deep and lasting. Into their lonely lives this sunny af ternoon there had come a startling ex perience. Their home was u doublo house, with a common porch. Robert lived alone in his quarters. Martin had a housekeeper, a Mrs. Wade. Thus for years these two rare old bachelors hud lived, daily sinking deeper into a rut of uueventful existence. "See here, Robert," spoke Martin, after a pause during which the twain ;:iized down at the little huddled atom onugly ensconced in a padded basket, "I see we are of one mind. Some moth er, heartless or driven to direful ex; tremlty, has left the child here. Why she selected two crabbed old cranks to take In the little refugee I cannot com prehend. Here It Is, though, and we ure like two schoolboys with an odd toy. All right we'll adopt the child." "Yes, It will break the loneliness," responded Robert; "but what do we know about babies?" "That's Just It," said Martin, eager ly. "But I have Mrs. Wade. She's old, but she's a woman and knows a baby's ways. Don't you see?" 's'o, I don'.tl" growled Robert. "1 have as much right to the child us you have." "Grunted, ilnd we'll make It a mutual adoption," pacliled Martin, persuasive ly. "I've thought for a long time how senseless It was for us to maintain sep arate establishments. Close up your Joint and lessen the expense by taking a room with us, and share the baby among us." So the little foundling was carried Into the house, each of the queer old characters Jealously insistent on hav ing a handle of the basket nil to him self. "Here's a visitor, and we're going to adopt the little fellow," announced Brother Mnrtln, and Mrs. Wade went Into ecstucles over the tiny stranger. Never was such a lovely, smiling, blue eyed ungel! Why, set he wound hlq chubby lingers around her work-worn'1 hand und actually laughed up at her! Oh, this wus such a rare gift from heaven I And Martin grinned and chuckled, and Robert hopped from foot to foot In a state of high excitement, And Mrs. Wude cried and laughed, while the baby cooed and crowed. In the following Irrational week Mar tin sneaked down town and came back with all kinds of baby goods. Robert contributed n high chnir and a rocking horse. The two fond and foolish guard luns hovered ubout tho cradle on ull ' occasions possible. "I've been thinking that baby ought to have uome one to enro specially for him," suggested Mrs. Wade. "I huvo my otnei duties, und I'm old and slow," so search was made and u Mrs. Mln turn hired to take charge of the child. Slyly Martin hid a baseball and bat, a kite und a pocketknlfe. Robert se cretly went him one better. He had a toy wagon and a sled under the bed. The days went by pleasantly nnd peacefully, the Infatuated brothers dis covering dally some new cuteuess und intelligence In the baby, nlwuys crow ing and smiling. One day the new nurse was wheeling the little child along the street when a ludy, youthful In face and form, stopped her to bend over und curess the baby. The nurse was attracted by this Interest. They fell into conversation and the nurse mentioned that she would have to give up her charge, as some relatives had asked her to make her home with them. "Oh, cun I trust you? Will you bless ray life by one simple net?" broke forth the strange lntly. and Into the nurse's ear she whlspereTJ a story thut brought tenrs of symputhy to her eyes. It came about that when the nurse left the Leslie home sho recommended "a friend." As Mrs. Bell, the latter succeeded her. Tho boy seemed to love her from the sturt. She won upon tho brothers and Mrs. Wade. One duy Martin called his brother into the library, closed the door cure fully nnd extended to him a letter. "Read that," he said soberly. "Why, what Is it about? Who wrote itr "Mrs. Bell, otherwise Mrs. Arnold Leslie, wife of the nephew you sent adrift eight years ago. He 1ms been 111 ln.n sanitarium for a year. She had to work to keep him there and had to give up the Imhy. The letter tells ull tho story, and Arnold Is well and (join ing for her." '"Not to tnkc the baby away?" quav ered Robert. "Unless" "I understand," spoko Robert, aris ing and leaving the room. He drew a roll of banknotes from his pocket. He found Mrs. Bell In the garden. "Daughter," he said, tendering tho money, his voice quivering with tho ut most emotion, "eud for our nephew and tell him Ufo, and baby and homo und love ure ull waiting for him hero home I" I & " - - ,, ' : ...v ' I 1 doited by thu Censor.
