THE SEMI WEEKLY TRIDUNE, NORTH PLATTE, NEBRASKA. WHERE FIN! G IS PROFITABLE The Future of Great Possibilities. Rome Idea of the grent wealth that the Western Cnnndn farmer hiul In view a few ytars ago Is now being real lied. Tho ninount received from the Balo of wheat, oats, barley, flax aud rye tH 1017 was $270,000,000, while the Bales of live stock at Winnipeg alone netted $-10,000,000 additional. Of this Bum hogs alono gave over eleven mil lion dollars. The Increases at Calgary and Edmonton were over 0 million dollars. This money, so easily earned, Is be ing, spent In Improvements In farm property, purchasing additional land, buying tractors, automobiles, aud Im proving homo conditions, providing electric light, steam heat, new furni ture, pianos, buying. Victory bonds, paying up old debts, etc. Over five hundred tractors were sold In Southern Alberta In 1017. One Implement agent reports that tho In crease In his business In 1017, over that of 1010. was caual to" tho total business In 1015. It Is tho same story all over the country. And It Is not this evidence alone which proves the advancement and growth of the three nrnlrle provinces, but tho largo In crease In tho number of settlers; the Improvement In tho extent of the cul tivated areas and agricultural produc tion; tho Increase in value of which over 1010 was $77,000,000. This wonderful progress that has been made In .agriculture In Western Canada Is but the beginning which marks the future of the greatest agri cultural country on tho continent, showing a future of great possibilities. There arc millions of acres yet un tilled, and of land ns good as any of that which Is now giving Its owners a return of from twenty to thirty dollars an acre, figures that In many cases represent the cost of tho land, with all cultivation costs Included. It Is true that tho cost of production has In creased during tho past few years, but the price of the product has also In creased to a figure which leaves a large balance to the credit of the pro ducer. "That the effective conduct of tho wnr demands Immediate attention to proper construction and maintenance of the highways of the country Ih n plain statement of facts," asserts Chairman George 1 Coleman of tho American Association of Stnte High way Officials. "Never before has thero been such urgent need of a comprehensive nnd definite policy for road and-strect con struction and maintenance as Is the case at present, and, In making their request to tho United States govern ment to formulate and promulgate at' the earliest hour a plan which shall be countrywide In Its character, the, state highway ofllclals believe that they are expressing tho concensus oil opinion of all citizens Interested li roads progress Intended to encompass tho greatest economic and military value In conserving tho resources ot tho country nnd facilitating the high ways transportation of freight. The main roads of Connecticut have, hong been famous for their excellence, a condition due to their efficient main tenance under heavy tratlle as well ns to thalr original good construction. State Highway Commissioner Bennef has organized a special branch of his bureau to attend to this maintenance. so that there Is no divided responsibil ity for results. It Is under a super intendent of repairs, W. Lcroy Ulrlch, who recently explained how the good results are attained. The state has been divided into ten districts. Any part of each of them enn be easily reached from a central point, whero tho ofilce of the district supervisor of repairs is located. Each district In dl vlded Into sections, eaclr in charge of a foreman. In addition each dis trict has ono or more gangs transferred from place to place to carry on recon structlon, oiling and other work which Is occasionally needed in such amounts that tho section forces are unable to perform It without neglecting other du tics. Tills bureau handles all tho maintenance and small reconstruction work of tho state and keeps the roads In good condition until long stretches become so worn that their reconstniC' tlon by contract Is more economical hnii further maintenance. QUARTERS FOR DAIRY CALVES To Prevent Bumping and Jostling of Young Animals Small Pens Should Be Provided. (Prepared by the United States Depart ment of Agriculture.) Small calves should not ho bumped and jostled about. An easy way to prevent this Is to provide small pens, not less than four by six feet In size, In each of which n calf may bo kept for the first two weeks. The pens should be fitted with feed boxes for grnln and racks for hay. After tho calf Is old enough to run with tho others It Is placed with them In a larger pen. Stanchions nro fixed on one side of this pen to provldo for tho separato feeding of tho cnlvcs, so ns to lnsuro thnt ench receives Its proper care. Hacks for hay should also be placed within easy reach of tho calves. Too much cmnhasls cannot bo laid upon the necessity of having light, dry quarters for tho calves. Bedding al ways should be abundant and should be changed often, In order that - tho pen always may bo dry. Lack of at tention to theso ronttors is very likely to allow tho development of tho vari ous calf dlscnscs. After tho calf Is a few weeks old, It can stand considerable cold If It Is kept dry and hns dry quarters. Pro vision ulso should bo made to allow , the calves plenty of exercise. A small paddock or pasture adjoining the calf stables Is excellent for this purpose. Except for the very young ones, calves may bo let out In the excrclso lot for a short period each day when tho weather Is not too cold or stormy. If the calves aro kept together In a large pen It Is very difficult to feed them by hand unless they are tied. When they are looeo the milk often Is Trees Along Highways. The highway commissioner of Penn sylvania suggests that trees planted along highways should be fruit or nut bearers. This would mnko fine pick ing for tourists nnd small boys. Ruin Asphalt Pavements. Asphalt pavements are softened and sometimes disintegrated by Illuminat ing gas leaking from mains beneath them. Good Qualities of Horse. Part of the stamina, durability nnd spirit of u horse ls Inherited and pari Is produced through proper feedlug. Bad Roads Expensive. Had roads are the heaviest expense (hat production lu required to meut. l5 Good Place to Keep Calves. epillcd, and the lnrger calves get part of the smaller ones' share. Very simple stanchions may bo constructed to prevent losses of milk and lnsuro the equal distribution of tho feed. To prevent tho calves from sucking ono another they should ho kept in tho stanchions for some tlmo after feeding. A calf stanchion mny bo constructed of cheap or scrap lumber. It Is usu ally 80 to 40 Inches high nnd hns a four-Inch space for tho calf's head. SANITARY SHED FOR MILKING Cows Should Be Kept Clean and Ud ders Wiped With Damp Cloth to Keep Out Dirt. Tho cows should be kept clean and milked in a place free from dust. If the udders of tho cows are wiped with a damp cloth It will prevent dirt, dan druff and hair from .falling Into the milk with their millions of bacteria.- A covered or small-top milk pull should always be used In milking. It keeps out more than half of the germs. COWS RESPOND TO FEEDING Bcfps fecth. breath . appetite, digestion. "Give it to me, please Grand daddy."
