((Prepared by tho United States Depart ment of Agriculture.) To have dairy cows ns a part of tho equipment on every farm, enabling tenants to becomo eelf-supportlng throughout the year nnd nt tho snrao .time mnlntnln desirable soil condi tions, Is n plnn recommended by the burenu of nnlmal industry, United States department of agriculture, nmong tho land owners of tho South. Tho plan Is accompanied with nn active campaign for feed production ; ns n re sult n mnrked Increase In the ncrcngo pt legumes, particularly velvet beans and peanuts, has been shown. Every effort Is being made by field men of tho department to nld In bring ing In n sufficient supply of good cows to establish dairying nnd to fix tho typo of good cows In tho minds of the farm ers. Tho readiness of bankers to help finance the purchnso of dairy cattle Is an indication of how well established tho .Industry has becomo through co operative and stato work. ESTIMATE VALUE OF MANURE Result Given of Test Conducted at North Dakota Experiment Sta tion With Corn and Wheat. Manure applied to land that was put into corn nnd followed by threo crops of wheat (at North Dakota experi ment fitation, 1000-1010) nt the rate of six loads per acre Increased the yield enough to bring $1.40 pur lontL Wheat wns then averaging about 80 cents nnd corn BO cents per bushel. Now that wheat and com arc over $2 per bushel nnd tho return per load of ma nure will be about $3.00 if tho saroo rate of increase In tho crop Is fle cured. PLAN TO GUARD LIVE STOCK Any Animal Should Be Segregated Soon as Symptoms of Illness Are First Discovered. Preventive rather thnn therapeutic measures will help farmers to con serve moro live stock, nays O. P. Fitch, hend of the veterinary division, Minne sota College of Agriculture. Dairy Farmers Will Find It Profitable to Give Fowls All They Will Consume Each Day. Experiments havo shown that tho feeding of milk, including sour milk and buttermilk, Increases the egg yield und dnlry farmers will find It profitable to glvo their hcnsuill they will drink nnd also mix the damp mash with milk If a damp mush is fed, ft RECORD FOR WHITE LEGHORN Northwest Queen Produced 235 Eggi in Twelve Months She Is Mod est, Retiring Hen. She did not stop laying nt tho end ol tho twclvo months, however, but kept right on and finished her 213th egg in twelve months nnd twenty days. This plcturo wns taken nt that time. She is a modest, retiring sort of n queen but sho rules with grout decorum in n queendom where there are about font hundred who look like her in tholi snowy whiteness. Tho vnluo of good lnylng strain of hens Is so great, according to Supt. 0. C. Selvlg of the Crookston Agrleultur- Northwest Queen No. 117. nl school, that during war times espe cially, every effort should bo made to Increase the number of hens nnd also by scientific care and feeding to in crease their yearly record. PREPARE FOR SPRING LAMBS Success of Crop Depends Greatly on Care and Feed of Ewes During Cold Weather. (Prepared by tho United States Depart ment of Agriculture.) The enro nnd feed of tho ewes dur ing winter has u grcnt deal to do with the success of tho spring lamb crop. Wise feeding, is especially Important because of tho high prices of feed nnd sheep. The flockowner Is fortunate who has a good supply of clover, alfal fa, cowpeas or soybean hay, for thoy aro good feeds upon which to base the winter ration of ewes. Corn stover, oats straw, silage, and roots are- econo mical supplements. "Feed economically but well" is tho advice offered by sheep sneclnllsts. Tho wise application ol this good ndvlco will depend on the farmer himself nnd such specialists as he may be nble to consult. LIGHT DRESSING OF MANURE Yields Larger Returns Per Ton of Fertilizer Used Than Does Heavier Application. A light application of manure yleld9 larger returns per ton of manure used than does n heavier application. This has been proven by the trials nt many experiment stations. Heavy applica tions of 30 to 40 tons per ncro give the largest yields, but when the amount of manure is limited nnd the nren of Innd Is large, light applica tions of six to ten loads per ncro give tho most profitable returns. Very ben eficial results may be secured by giv ing u very light dressing of ono to threo loads per aero to tho fields which aro to be plowed for green manure. Tho manuro doubtless increnses bac terial notion nnd hastens the fermenta tion and decay of tho organic matter, PROVIDE ABUNDANCE OF AIR Where Vegetables Are Growing in Cold Frames, Slide Sash Pjiwn on Every Mild Day. Cauliflower, cabbage, lettuce ad parsley plants which nre In the cold frames should bo given nn abundance of nlr. Slide the snsh down about half way In tho middle of every mild dny for ono or two hours. When it is not safe to take off the sash entirely in tho middle of the day, let them be raised upon props two or three inches at tho back of tho frames to let In fresh air to tho plants. MANURE SHEDS ARE FAVORED Measures to Protect Valuable Farm Product Are Well Worth Ex pense Prevent Leaching. The hlch cost of fertilizer makes barnyard manure n most valuable product of tho farm. Measures to pre vent It from leaching, such ns storing ft In a shed, are well worth the ex pense. Experiments carried on in Ohio show that manure loses about half its potash, one-third Its nitrogen and one fourth its phosphorus when exposed to tho wenther for three winter months ESTIMATE VALUE OF MANURE Composition From Different Animals Varies That From Sheep Rich In Plant Food. Tho composition of manuro from dlf- ferent animals varies. Sheep manure is riencst in plant-food elements; hog mnnuro ranks second; horse manure third nnd cow mnnuro fourth. A inn of barnynrd manure contains, on tho average, 10 pounds of nitrogen, 2 pounds of phosphorus nnd 8 pounds of potassium, having a plnut food valuo nt present prices of about $8 a ton. POWDER HENS BY MACHINERY Discarded Churn Makes Application of Insect Powder Easy and Quite Effective. (By C. S. ANDEItSON, Colorado Agri cultural CoIIoko, Fort Collins.) A hen may be healthy, well fed, nnd well housed, but If sho Is overrun with lice nnd mites sho cannot remain n profitable producer or a good mother for tho young chicks. Under ordlnnry conditions, Hco and mites can bo kept down by frequently spraying the poultry houses, roosts, dropping boards and nests nnd by pro viding n good dusting bath for tho birds. When theso precautions fall, In dividual trontment must bo followed by dusting the birds with sotno good Insect pwdcr. In largo flocks this Is very laborious, and tho following use of nn old discarded churn may help to solve the problem. Put a cupful or so of Insect powder In tho churn. Next put In tho birds one at n timo and turn the churn gent ly for n half-dozen revolutions. If the powder contains cnrhollc ncld or some other strong irritant, It will be well to protect tho birds' eyes by slipping n small cloth sack over their heads. Tho rotation of tho churn causes tho bird to relax and tho feathers to open, thus letting tho Insect powdor get well Into the skin. TURKEYS ALWAYS IN DEMAND Because of Constant Decrease In Num ber of Fowls There Is Increased Profits In Them. (By ANDREW WKINANT.) Because tho number of turkeys In tho United States has constantly de creased In tho last few years whllo the demand has perhaps increased, a more profitable sldo lino than turkey raising for those favorably situated for tho work could hardly be found. Given plenty or range, turkeys will readily find grasshoppers and other insects, groen vegetation, the seeds of weeds and grasses, waste grains, nnd acorns nnd nuts of various kinds. In this way tho cost of raising them Is small and tho profits large. Grain nnd stock farms are particularly well adapted to turkey rulslng, and It Is In such places that most of tho turkeys nre found. Llttlo has ever been done In tkc way of raising turkeys In con flnement, nnd when It hns been tried tho results havo been discouraging. WAR RATIONS FOR CHICKENS Corn Is Probably Most Important Food for Poultry and Should Not Be Overlooked. , In spite of the high cost of feeds n flock of good fowls will continue to re turn n hnndsomo profit, because of tho great advanco In prlco of eggs und poultry. There Is no cheap ration, because all grains nnd feeds hnve ad' vanced. Corn Is probably tho mosl Important food for poultry nnd should not be left out of tho ration. Cracked com nnd oats may well constitute tho bulk of the hnrd grain, using equal quantities by weight of each. A little barley, say 20 to 25 pet cent, will ndd variety, but wheat l! out of tho question. Low grndes and screenings that do not contain too many weed seeds may nlso he used DAMAGED FEED FOR POULTRY Before Buying Low-Grade Grain Make Sure That It Has Sufficient Amount of Nutriment. Before buying low-grndo or damaged grain to feed the poultry, mnko sure that it has enough nutriment in It to ho worth tho price you pny for it Grains that aro simply shrunken, If bought cheap enough, nre sometimes profitable to feed; but thoso which are damaged in some other ways frequent ly nre almost useless and arc 'ihi slve at nny price. When possible, It Is well to send snmplcs of this kind of grain to your state experiment station for examination.
