Sentt'Beeklu Subline. IRA L. BARE, Editor and Publisher SUBSCRIPTION RATES: One Year by Jlnll in Adrnnco....$1.25 Oho l'cnr by Carrier In Adrnnco $1.50 Entered at North Platte. Nebraska, Postoffico as Second Class Matter. TUESDAY, JANUARY 15th, 1918. PETITION FOR COUNTY IS GRANTED BY BOARD 1 if SL the i ill Last Friday tho county commlsslou b granted a petition Uiat had been asking that they make an ap- latlon of $1,500 to help defray senses of a county agrlcultuarl agent- This petition contained the names of six or seven hundred land owning farmers, and In taking favor able action the commissioners stlpul nted that tho money should not bi available until atfer tho now levy had been made, which will bo in July. To helo defray tho expense of the agent, tho federal government will appro-' priate $1,200 per annum. HUNDRED MILLION A MONTH TO TAY MEN More Hogs. Whilo tho pork Increase meetings! wero not well attended in Lincoln ( county, this was not duo to a lack of( interest but rather to tho fact that tho farmers had already decided to in crease the number of sows kopt Sel dom does ono find a farmer who Is not breeding more sows than ho bred last ear. rne increase in mo oru uibuiw. prising Lincoln, Keith, Duel, Gar- Arthur and McPherson counties, shown by 174 reports, is at per. cent. Tho average Increase tor mo, state as Indicated by 1200 reports is 24 per cent. A recent report states that the corn rop is 24 per cent abve nor mal after making popcr deduction for the condition of corn. This justifies an even greater hog Increase. o Tho pay roll of the fighting force of the United States is now nearly $ 100,000,000 a month. This Incudes salad m of officers anl enlisted men in U10 army and navy Berving both In this country and abroad, family allotments and com pcnsatlon for certain services ren dered. But it does not tako into account family allowances paid by the" gov ernment toward tho Bupport of fam ilies of enlisted men, under specified conditions, nor does it include any of tho special compensatory features of tho military and naval insurance net. Details of tho pay rccelvel by sol diers and sailors and of tho operation of tho war risk insurance bureau havo Just been complied by tho sovoral do nartmcnts for information of tho house, and those relating to the navy wero made public by tho committee on public information. Others will bo made public later and separately. The committee statement shows that in December $17,000,000 was disbursed as monthly compensation for the services of 300.000 officers and men who iconsttuta tho uniformed force of the navy. This did not include any amounts that might havo been paid under tho war risk act as family al lowanco or other compensation pro vlded for by that law. .:o: Roy Cochran In France. Roy L. Cochran, former county sur veyor, Is now In Franco, having reach ed that country about ten days ago. Before going over he was stationed at Fortress Monroe as a lieutenant In tho Thirteenth Coast Artillery. There are now a half dozen or more former North Platte boys "over there." Now Danger for tho Soldier Boy. Arrest at the Instance of an army officer of a young woman who had committed bigamy in order to secure the allowance granted to soldiers dependents gives color ,to the warning iRsuod aeainst this new type of "vam plre." Young soldiers are picked out by these women and deliberately led Into marriage, the one pMrposo being to secure money from tho government, ho eame is not a new one, nor uoes It exhibit much modification in its ue tails.' It is retorted from some of the southern army camps that as many as three and four soldiers, havo been wedded to the same woman. Omaha has developed but the ono case so far as is roported, but it is sufficient to mark the danger and put tho boys on guard. The young men who are away from home for tho first time, wearing their country's uniform, should be warned that marriage is not merely ah enlistment for the war, and therefore to bo approached very seriously. Ro mance is part of a soldier's life, but it may havo consequences that will embarrass him in after years. Tho "vnmnlre" is one of his chiefest dang ers, and ono against whom it is difficult to euard. How to protect the young men in the army is a puzzle for the authorities as yet, bait a way win lm found to mlnlmizo the. danger now that its exlstance is realized. Omaha Bee. Mny Consolidate Trains, OMAHA, Consolidation of the Ovor land and Los Angeles limited trains and tho removal of the extra fare on tho overland is a war measure sug gested by President Calvin of tho Union Pacific railroad to tho commit tee now working on new schedules at Chicago. Tho train will split up at Ogden. ono portion going to Ios Angeles and tho other to San Fran cisco. Another contemplated consoli dation is that of the Pacific Limited and Oregon-Washington limited will ibo consolidated and operated as ono as far as Granger, Wyo., whore It will divide, one section going to San Fran cisco and the other to the Pacific northwest.
