MONRO Ono night at a masquerade ball two persons appeared, a man and a woman, who excited considerable interest. The man represented Faust, the woman Marguerite. Presently u third person entered, representing Mcphlstophelcs. The interest wus heightened by Mc phlstophelcs and Faust tnlking togeth er, both nt the same time enstiug glances at Marguerite. "That girl will lose her heart." said a guest representing Rob Roy to an other dressed as Martha Washington. "Tho fellow got Up us Faust is a lady killer." "And I know the girl," Bald the other. "If Faust tackles her she'll make him regret It." 'I'll tell you what you do. Tell Mar- gucrlto to go for Faust. I'll tell Faust ' to go for her. I'll bet you n dozen pairs : of gloves ngainst a box of cigars that I win." The bet was made, though It was ex pected that It would result In a draw, for It was not likely that a definite re sult could be obtnlucd. Faust naturally gravitated toward Marguerite, and tho two disappeared in an uufroqueuted) part of tho house, where occasional passers saw them sitting tete-a-tote, unmasked. They seemed very much absorbed In each other. Faust left Marguerito to keep an en gagement to dance ho had broken two engagements for Marguerite, but tho woman with whom ho had tho third enmo for him and Mcphlstophelcs Joined her. When Faust finished his dance ho came back to continue the tete-a-tete and, finding Mcphlstophelcs In his place, scowled. Mcphlstophelcs scowled back. Marguerite gave tho latter a nod, indicating that she pre ferred tho former, and Mcphlstophelcs went away sullen. Later Marguerite danced with Me phlstopheles, while Faust was " scon standing apart, evidently In no good , humor. Tho man calling another, tho two hurried ly left the ballroom in company with Marguerite. As soon ns they were out of sight and hearing of tho dancers sho sold to them hurriedly: "Thoso two men are going to kill each other!" "Tho devil!" exclaimed ono of the men. "Yes, the devil and Faust Mr. Bur net and Dr. Wells." "What for?" "Well, I suppose it's about me. Go quick! Stop them!" "Which way did they go?" "They're out on tho tennis court." Tho two men ran out through a back door. It was Just light enough to seo two dim figures on tho tennis court hacking at each othor with tho short knives thoy hnd worn In their belts during tho evening. Tho two men and tho girl ran to whero they were, and tho combatants, seeing, thnt they had attracted attention, desisted. Ono of those who had Interfered took Faust by the arm, and the other, n large, powerful fellow, took Mephistopheles by the' ear and led them back to tho houso and Into tho ballroom. Tho dnncing had ceased, and the dancers wcro promenading or resting. On sccli:g Faust und Mephistopheles led In llko two naughty schoolboys thero was a shout of lnughter, Mar guerito made for a door, but sho was caught and brought back. Even the absurdity of tho situation did not prevent the rivals from scowl ing nt each other, and Mephistopheles wus unconsciously playing tho part of Satan to perfection. "Hello, aim!" said ono of his chums. 1 "When did you como up from below?" Jim cast a malevolent glnnco nt the speaker, but made no reply. "Kate," snld tho lady who had made tho hit, "I knew you were a match for any man, but I didn't think you wore superior to Satan." "Como to tho supper room!" cried tho man who had lost tho gloves. "I've a toast for you all." Tho rivals and tho Nglii they had fought for wero pushed Into tho supper room, fresh champagno was opened, and this was tho toast given: "To the only girl that over lived who has been too much for the devil." A Professor's Story By OSCAR COX iff Aftor tho death of Professor Kooi niun, one of tho most remarkable sci entists of Germany, tho followlug man uscript was found among his papers. Ills sou, into whose hands they fell, refused for a long while to publish it, for thero were thoso who belioved that tho professor hud Impaired his mind na well as his body by too close appll. cutlon to scientific research. However, tho heir nt Inst nssented. Tho paper reads! Holding tho chair of chemistry In the university, ull tho work of my brain has becu devoted to tho decomposition and reconstruction of matter. I have long been convinced thnt wo must pass through matter to get at spirit In oth er words, our medium Instead of being a person must bo science. Now, by chemical ngents we photograph matter which wo can sco. Moro than this, wo photograph objects wo cannot see ex cept by tho aid of tho microscope. Still more, wo photograph objects beyond tho range of our vision Oven assisted by tho- telescope. Ergo, may wo not by tho extension of iho prdcess at last get a plcturo of beings existing In spirit form? This dry scientific preface Is but pre liminary to tho story I havo to tell and Is essential to its understanding. Ten years ago I married Louisa Murkhnm. Five years ago sho died. Since then my scientific studies hnve run in but ono view, to bring her within tho sight of my mortal eyes. Tho discovery of radium gave a ucw lmpulso to my investigations. Radium is tho first substnnco known to exert power without exhausting Itself. Tho steam engine must havo coal, tho body food. As soon ns I heard of radium it struck mo that here was a substance akin to spirit, neither requiring fuel. We may photograph matter even "Su Invisible. Therefore may we nt photograph spirit? ; 1 will not ask you to follow. mo In my ,studlcs of Photographic processes, tried to peiietrato the realm of soul. knoyn form of matter. I could never get them again. If they wero spirits they had happened to bo whero thcy would bo photographed. I pondered long on how I might pho tograph my wife, provided sho was ac customed to frequent places sho had been used to frequenting in life. Thero Is a window of her bedroom at which sho used to sit and look over a view of rolling ground on which wero scatter ed several of tho college buildings. It occurred to mo to keep a plate con stantly exposed bearing on tiro chair sho had used in this window In tho hope thnt sho would como there. A week's exposure failed to show any Impression on tho plate. Possibly, I thought, ordinary light is not strong enough for tho purpose. I determined to use tho strongest light available. Tho room faecd south, tho "fidii being on It In summer from .8 o'clock in tho morning till about G in the evening. I rigged a lens on tho principle of tho common sunglass outsido tho window, throwing on tho chair a light com posed of tho converging rays of the sun. My lens was arranged to turn by clockwork, 30 that tho light thrown on tho chair would continue Irrespective of tho sun's apparent motion. I exposed my pinto ull ono very clear day, but found nothing on it when de veloped. For five successive days tho sun shone well. I continued the ex posure. After tho fifth exposuro a f alnt figure nppeared on tho plnte. A print showed a woman sitting In tho chair. Tho figure was not disthict enough for me to tell whether or not It was that of my wife. I mourned tho Im perfection of my materials and sighed that I had 110110 more delicate. I caught tho flguro at tho window Bev- enil times, but tho impression wus al ways blurred. How I longed to pro duce a picture that would give tho fea tures of tho fuce! Doubtless I would then sco my wlfo looking at mo as sho had often done wlillo silting In that chair. Soon after this I changed tho basis of my Investigations. I laid out a sc ries of experiments at taking pictures with tho light of radium. I worked and though so incessantly that at last my friends Interfered, thinking I wOuld break down. They interrupted me, however, Just as I had succeeded. havo mado a number of photographs of my wlfo holding out her arms to mo ana wearing mat smiic. Hardly any words in tho English lan guage havo Btrayod farther from their original meaning than tho terms of for estry, Thus'n forest was originally a great tract of country, which might in- cludo woods, cultivated lands, pastures and oven towns and villages, nil tho hunting rights over which wcro reserv ed to tho monarch. A chaso differed from a forest mainly In tho fact that tho hunting rights wcro vested In n subject instead of a king. A park was a fenced preserve, cither In or out of a forest, wlillo n warren was a pleco of waste ground over which tho right to hunt tho hare, tho rabbit and tho fox, tho pheasant, tho partrldgo and tho woodcock had been granted by tho king. In tho same way tho term afforesta tion had nothing to do with tho plant ing of- trees. It meant tho subjection of any tract of country to tho forest laws In other words, It was tho set ting nsldo of this tract as a forest. A forest might and commonly did include vast estates of landowners and largo towns whoso rights remained untouch ed except ns to game. London Mall. Thb Outdoor Woman. In other words, sho would soon bo an old maid if something wasn't done. But whnt? In her perplexity she consulted tho seventh dnughter of a soventh daugh ter. "I feel," declared tho young per son tragically, "as if I wero drowning." Tho seventh daughter of a soventh daughter was not lacking to herself. "Precisely," sho replied.
