Writer In Commercial Farming Shows That Greater Profit Is Made by Sending Fowls to Market Alive Time Is Lost. Many farmers' wives dress chickens for tho market rather than sell them nllve, on the theory that there Is more money in a bird dressed for the oven than In one sold ullve. A good way to determine thnt for oneself Is to keep notes on the weight of the live and dressed bird, und the prices for same. Some time ago, T. B. Orr, In Commer cial Farming, gave IiIb experience in this line, us follows: "We sorted out 49 birds thnt weighed 200 pounds. Then we divided them, the 20 lnrger ones weighing 100 pounds, the twenty-nine smaller nnd harder to Jress, weighing the same. Of course, at 12 cents a pound, each lot would have brought us .$12. "Of the largest, eight weighed as follows: Allvo, 45 pounds; beheaded nnd plucked, 37 pounds a loss of one pound each on head and feathers; fully dressed, 33 pounds n loss on crop and pntrnlls of one pound each. (They had had no food for 18 hours.) The total loss was 20.00 per cent. Alive they would have brought us 5.40; dressed, they brought us $5.01, so wo had 21 cents for dressing. "Tho smaller 12 of these 20 birds weighed ns follows : Alive, 53 pounds ; fully dressed, ns tho others, 30 pounds a loss of 1.25 pounds each, or a loss of 29 per cent in dressing. Alive, they would have brought us $0.00; dressed, they brought us $0.03, so we only had i total of 24 cents for dressing 20 birds. We saw that we should lose our time nnd some money also If we dressed the other 29"; therefore, as we had killed the most attractive-looking birds, we decided to let the others go alive. We estimated that they'would lose 35 per cent, or dressed 05 pounds to tho 100, thus bringing us about $1 less dressed than alive, and It would have cost us fully $1.50 to have .dressed them. On growing cockerels, tho loss averages not far from 30 per cent; even on particularly good ones, It can not bo less than 25 per cent." TO SECURE PURE SEED GRAIN Bulletin Issued by Expert of North Dakota Experiment Station on the Important Subject. How to secure seed grain that Is free .from mixtures and diseases is the subject matter of circular No. 12 Just issued by the North Dakota ex periment station. Professor Bolley advises securing ns pure seed as possible, cleaning and treating It and sowing It so as to leave every seventh row for a path to walk through to pick out weeds and the plants that are diseased or that are not true to type. In this way pure disease freo seed can be secured for next year's sowing. RACK FOR MANURE SPREADER Object of Device Is to Make It Possl ble to Carry Much Bigger Loads How It Works. HAECK1CR, Lincoln, Nob.) Silage Is a splendid ration but not complete. To got tho best results you should hnve some feed to go with it, which Is strong In protein, such as ol falfa hoy, clover hay, oil tnenl or cot tonseed meal. Cottonseed meal Is the balance for corn silage. Here Is a great feeding problem In a nutshell. Good feeding means to supply nutri ents with their required nourishment ut the least possible cost. Tho re quired nourishment means n supply of digestible enrbo-hydrutes and pro tein in proper proportion. Corn silage Is tho cheapest known form of carbo-hydrates alfalfa, cot tonseed meal and clover furnish n cheap form of protein. A thousnnd pound steer can consume nbout 35 pounds of corn Rllnge per day. With Calves Eat Sllaga Like Pigs. this he should have six or seven pounds of alfalfa hay and a grain mix ture made up of ground corn, cotton seed or Unseed meal. The nmount of ground feed will depend upon how quickly you wish to market the cat tle. The most economical rations und the cheapest gains arc mude on small grain rations, ranging from four to six pounds. HANDY OFFICE FOR FARMER Room In Farm Home Should Be Con- stdered Necessity Rather Than Luxury Ideal Make-Up. 1 1 i If you arc planning to build n farm home, mnkc it complete by Including in your plans space for an ofllce. Such a room In the farm home should be considered more ns a necessity than as a luxury. The business farmer should have n place In which to look over, and take care Of his mall, to file his business documents, to keep his agricultural papers and books, nnd to receive his business callers. Every farm home is supplied with a room In which to receive social guests ; why not one for business guests? The farm ofllce should hnve an out side entrance, plenty of light, nnd nn inside entrance. By nil means, it should be cheerful and never allowed to take on n stuffy appearance from an overdose of furniture, pictures, or plants. The Ideal farm ofllce Is furnished with a flat top desk and n filing case rather than a roll-top desk nnd pigeon holes. Tho tendency to stick things away Is thus, to n certain degree, over come. It also contains n sectional bookcase, strong, comfortable chairs, a typewriter und place for hanging coats and hnts. Men bent on a business deal will reach an agreement easier and more quickly In n private place where Inter ruptions are not necessury, where ref erences und papers are nt one's el bow, und where u business ntmosphere pervades the surroundings. A scnrclty of eggs in winter is n loss that every true poultry keeper tries to avoid. Being tho only sourco of rcvenuo expected from the flock nt this time of tho year, overyono la unxlous to hnvo a goodly supply, and with proper caro and feed, satisfac tory results can reasonably bo ex pected. Proper quarters in which to house tho hens Is tho first and foremost necessary essential. Tho house should be kept clenr of dirt nnd rubbish, und tho nests sweet and cloan. A cold dry hen houso provided It 13 free from dafts, Is to be preferred to n damp, warm one, as the latter is suro to bring dlseaso to your flock. In tho dust bath which must al ways be provided In winter should bo mixed rcllablo louso powder, to keep Modern Poultry House, hens free from vermin. A louse-In- tested fowl positively won't lay nnd is n losing proposition, always. Make tho hens work for every slnglo bit of food they get In winter, It will prevent them becoming too fat nnd helps keep up a vigorous circulation, preventing n chilled and shivering fowl. Hot food In winter Is Imperntlvoj every morning und night It should bo fed piping hot. In the morning feed a dry mnsh, made by boiling small pota toes, beets, turnips, vegetable parings and the like, thickened with bran or other middlings. This mnsh should be fed in clean troughs, placed high enough to mako the hens hustlo to reach them. Hen? delight to scratch In n litter of dry leaves and It makes tho most ideal scratch-material. Small grain generously scnttcrcd In n deep litter of leaves will keep tho flock hap pily busy and contented the whole duy through. For tho last feed in tho day corn Is tho most satisfactory, Imparting tho heat so necessnry for tho well-being of the fowl during the cold, bitter winter nights. The best way to feed corn Is to place It In the oven on the cob and leave it until It Is baked u nice delicate brown. The savory odor of baked corn Is very appetizing, and when tho ears arc cut up In short lengths nnd fed thus to tho fowls it will keep them busy to pick up tho grains. Water must be provided in abund ance. Of course, It Is a dllllcult matter to keep water before the liens In zero weather, when It freezes al most as soon as It Is put out, but you must provide .It often enough to insura each foul getting its full. share. WINTER QUARTERS FOR HENS House Described and lilustratod That Accommodates Fifty White Leg horns Comfortably. I bclicvo I have tho best henhouso for health, comfort and capacity, cost considered. I have kept 50 White Leg horns in It for the last four winters and never had a frozen comb, nor a case of roup, writes F. It. Campbell of Nebraska In Missouri Valley Farmer. The house Is 10 feet wide, 12 feet deep, i feet high at tho caves und 7 nt tho ridge. There is a 12-inch board nt tho bottom In the open end and under tho west door so that no litter Is wasted. Houso and Floor Plan. A piece of 1-inch mesh wire netting is needed on Uio south side. Tho window on the eust sido may bo removed dur ing the summer for ventilation. Tho roof Is covered with patent roofing :ostlng $1.10 n square, nnd thero are absolutely no open cracks for drafts ou cither sido except tho south. Onco or twice u week u forkful of mil let or alfalfa Is thrown hi to the hens and wheat or onts scattered over thlH every morning. Tho hens aro busy tho coldest days. When a strong south wind comes up tho wlndown and doors are closed. Onco a month I take out tho roosts nnd nests which nro null kegs, and spray with coal oil. Tho low roof confines the body heat dove). oped nnd keeps tho hens warm, at tho same time being high enough for uu at tendant to dn his work. m 1 V I 1 1 hfutootv I I I I !
