caw TIIIRTY-SECOND YEAR. NORTH PLATTE, NEE., JANUARY 23, 1917. No. 3 JJktte a m m b-m am am m-mi 7- V .4.. '4 7 SOUTH PLATTE BRIDGE ELECTION SOON CALLED ESTIMATED COST OF STRUCTURE IS $10,000, OF WHICH CITY WILL PAY ONE-FOUKTH Election to Yoto Hondo will Soon bo Called In South Sldo District und . City ivlll Yotc on Proposition at tlie April Election. Tho county commissioners, upon petition, will soon call an election in the recontly constituted bridge district south of tho river for the pur ,poso of voting bonds for tho erection of tho new stool or concrcto bridge across tho South Platte river south of town. Tho cost of tho bridge is esti mated nt forty thousand dollars, of which tho state will contribute $20, 000, tho south side district $10,000 and Uio city of North Platto $10,000. It is probablo that tho bond election for tho city will bo hold on tho regular municipal olectlon day In April. Tho bridge will b? seven or eight hundrod feet long with a fill on the north ond and probably one on the south end. However, It has not been definitely decided, wo undoratand, whether there will bo fills at both ends or just on tho north end. The old wooden structure at present in use has about sorved its purpose, and tho repairs which have been made yearly for several years has cost about as much, if not more, than will tho interest on the bonds, and of course each succeeding year those repair bills havo grown heavier. Experience has demonstrated that steel or con crete is the only material to use In bridge construction. This class of bridg-e may cost more on tho start, hut tho upkeep is so slight that In the long run a permanent bridgo is much cheaper than one constructed of wood. Those who read the commissioners' proceedings from time to time and note the bills allowed for bridge lum ber ajtd bridgo repairs, must at once conclude that a wooden structuro is a vory expensive bridge after a fow years of use.
