KILLING WHITE GRUBS Plowing In Late Fall and During ' Winter Will Help. According to Their Life Cycles Pests Will Be Abundant Next Year, Causing Much Damage to Various Farm Crops. Every effort should bo made to pre vent destruction by whlto grubs, which, according to their life cycles, will bo abundant In 1017 and 1018, causing damage to timothy and small grains In 1017 and to corn In 101S. Lato fall and winter plowing will destroy many of the hibernating cut worms as well as such Insect pests as whlto grubs. 'This, therefore, should bo practiced when earlier plowing Is Impracticable. Farm poultry trained to follow tho plow nro also a great valuo In destroying tho pest, nnd hogs White Qrub and Parent Beetle. that aro allowed to pasture upon lond that harbors cutworms will root up and dovour great quantities of tho In sects. In most enscs tho moths lay their eggs In the lato summer or curly fall In fields which aro covered with grass or weeds. Tho worms hatch in n fow weoks, feed upon this vcgotatlon -until cold weather, nnd then hlbernnte as partly-grown caterpillars. When tho Infested field Is broken up nnd planted to corn or other wide-row crops in the spring, tho worms nro deprived of their natural food and are compelled to' at tack tho ncwly-plonted crop. They continue to consumo an enormous amount of food until they huvo at tained their full growth, and change to tho pupal or resting stage In late Juno or early July. LAYING QUALITY OF PULLETS Purchase a Purebred Male and Stop Trying to Keep Flock of All Kinds apd Colors. The thinking poultryman realizes that tho male Is "half of the pen." The chickens have one father In com mon nnd may have separata mothers, so the male's vigor and personality Is In every chick. Get n purebred male. Stop this keep ing n flock of nil kinds and colors. Bo careful to choose a male of real merit, bred with care and for a purpose. Whichever of the two alms eggs or meat Is tho best with you, select for that purpose, but never forget that a well-bred cockerel, one bred from meat-producing nnd egg-laying ances try, will decldely improve tho laying quality of the pullets, oven If you aro aiming and have chosen for the pur pose of size. CHARCOAL GOOD FOR CHICKS Given to Poultry as Corrective, Not as Food, Says Expert of Kan - sas State College. Charcoal Is given to poultry as n corrective, and not ns a food, asserts II, M. Sherwood, acting head of tho department of poultry husbandry in tho Kansas Stato Agricultural college. "In caso of Improper feeding It Is well to glvo charcoal to absorb lutes tlnnl gases," said Mr. Sherwood. "It la generally fed to growing chicks only, becauso of its high cost. "When there is n supply of cobs on tho farm, charcoal can bo mndo from them, and this would bo cheap enough to warrant feeding tt to hens ns well as chicks." CUTTING PEAS WITH MOWER Machines Run Better If Land Is Smooth Harrow Will Put Land In Good condition. Farmers should always remember that In sowing pus they must be cut with a mower. Mowing machines run better If tho land Is smooth. By using n harrow on tho land, It can enslly bo put In good condition for tho mower. In cutting' peas on rough land, It Is hard on the driver, the mower nnd the stock. MAINTAIN FERTILITY OF SOIL Specialists at Ohio Experiment Station Recommend Use of Phosphates to Reenforce Manure. I Slnco phosphorus Is carried oft the farm In rolntlvoly largo amounts In grain crops, In tho bones of animals, and in milk, soil specialists nt the Ohio experiment station recommend tho uso of acid phosphnto or raw phosphato rock to re-enforco bnrnynrd manure, if fertility of tho soil Is to be main tained. Acid phosphato Is more gen erally recommended, because under averago conditions It is nioro effective and more economical than tho raw rock. Acid phosphate has returned moro than three times Its cost In crop yields in many tests nt the experiment sta tion, qven when used In connection with manure. It Is ordinarily used nt tho rato of -10 pounds per ton of ma nurc. Tho phosphate may bo spread over tho manure In tho shed or yard or mixed with It nt tho tlmo of hauling. It may also bo sprinkled over tho stable floor behind tho animals, about ono pound being used dally per 1,000 pounds live weight of tho nulninl. In tho hitter case It also acts as au ab sorbent of tho liquid manure. POOR METHODS ARE COSTLY Farmers and Jobbers Could Mako $2,000,000 More a Year If Modern Plans Were Adopted. Kansas farmers and Jobbers aro pay ing a high price for carelessness and poor methods In handling nnd market ing eggs, according to F, 13. Fox, as sistant In poultry husbandry In tho Kansas State Agricultural college. "The egg business In Kansas amounts to nearly $30,000,000 annual ly. On this $2,000,000 moro could be mndo if farmers would realize tho im portance of proper methods In han dling eggs and poultry," commented Mr. Fox. "This enormous loss Is duo to Im proper nesting nnd housing, improper feeding, Improper care nnd handling of eggs on the farm, carelessness in hauling nnd shipping, nnd cnrclcssncss on the part of tho merchant in mar keting. "Loss to the producer duo to theso causes Is principally in tho quality of tho product, for which ho receives a lower price. Loss to tho consumer la In receiving eggs of poor quality, for which ho pays moro than they aro worth." CLEARING WALKS AND ROADS Adjustable Scraper is Useful for Many Kinds of Work on Farm' During Winter Season. My adjustable "V" scraper of crowder proves useful for many kinds of work, and especially in winter for clearing wnlks or roads of snow, says n writer in Missouri Valley Farmer. It Is truo that It Is being grown In somo of tho eastern states, but It docs not begin to compare with that grown under irrigation or under dry-farming conditions. WELL-ROTTED MANURE BEST Better for Gardens and Cheaper Than Commercial Fertilizers In These War Times. Well-rotted manure Is better thnn fresh manure for gardens. It Is also cheaper than commercial fertilizers In theso war times, when tho supplies of .some fertilizers nro cut off by tho blockado and tho materials used in making others aro very high In price becauso they are vscd In making ex plosives. CONCRETE TILE ARE DURABLE Causes of Failure May Be Traced to Improper Mixture Hardening Is of Importance. Concrete tile, If properly mnde, are very durable. Causes of falluro may bo traced to the use of too lean or too dry a mixture' Improper hardening nnd placing Id the ground too soon after making. Tho tllo need at least threo or fnur weeks' curing nnd hardening before It Is safe to lay them. Tho tlmo has como when moro nt I tentlon must bo given to high produc i Hon In tho farm flock. It is not enough I that tho poultry fanciers breed up I (heir layers mid attempt to Increase I iho strain. Furiuers ahould breed ur their own flocks. Wo should know what tho hens pro-' duco and let their star on tho farm depend upon what they pny. This la j tho only business way to look at potil i try raising. j Trap nestlnc Is tho fancier's way. II j is n good way, but other ways may be devised to keep records of tho hens, j Tho Important problem Is to And out j how many eggs each lieu lays nnd ! when sho lays them, j Summer lnycrs arc not near as Inv I portant ns early spring and wlntni I layers, for winter eggs always bring better prices, so do early spring eggs. It follows from this that a hen that lays in winter, though she produces tower eggs, may bo moro profitable than a summer layer. nut authorities tell us not to keep hens till they are very old. They say tho second season Is generally tho best for a laying hen. Hut there Is need of more records on this subject. Anyway, bens mnko better mothers when old than when pullets.
