Pigeons, With One Exception, Kepf Confined Average Annual Prbfit Per Pair Varies From 32 Cents to $3, Averaging $1.52. (By A. K. LEE.) A list of questions on pigeon raising was sent to pigeon breeders through out tho United Stutes, and, among sthers, replies were received from 22 largo breeders who kept from 300 to 2,200 pigeons and produced squabs for mnrket. The records from these breeders arc considered more appli cable to the commercial production of squabs than tho replies which were received from breeders keeping only a few pigeons for homo usu or pleas lire. These large breeders reported keeping tho Homer and Carricnux varieties utmost exclusively for squab raising, with a comparatively small number of the Dragoon, Maltese Hen nd White King mentioned. All except one breeder kept their pigeons con fined. The birds were mated nt from five to seven months old, the average mating age being 5,7 months. Grains Commonly Fed. Wheat, corn, knflr corn, Canada peas, millet and hemp were the grains most commonly fed, while a number of other grains, Including peanuts, grass seed, oats, buckwheat, sunflower seed, rice, Egyptian corn, cowpens and mllo maize were nlso used. About one- half of tho breeders reported the use Squabs, 28 Days Old, Ready for Market of some kind of green feed, including a wide range of such material. The use of rock salt was reported by one half of the breeders, loose table salt by one-fourth and table salt baked Into a hard lump by the rest. About 10 per cent used some extra feed, such as mil let or hemp seed, during the molting period, while several who did not uso any special feed for assisting the molt supplied these grains In their regular rations. One-third used hoppers in feed iug tho pigeons. About one-half supplied tobacco stems as the entire, or for part of the nesting material, and hay and straw were commonly used, while others used pine needles, cut pea vines and alfalfa stems. One-half reported free domfrom all diseases, and about one fourth gave canker ns a commou cause of sickness. The average annual profit per pair of breeders, varied from 82 cents $3, and averaged $1.52; tho feed cost from 05 cents to $2, with an averago of $1.32. All sold squabs for market wniie UDout one-mur sold Doth as breeders and for market. The aver ago price lor tne year received per dozen squabs varied from $2 to $4.02 and averaged $3.43. ERGOT SEPARATED FROM RYE Many Growers Perform Task by Put- ting Grain Into a 20 Per Cent Brine Solution. Tho most serl6us and destructive disease of ryo Is ergot. In this, one or raoro kernels of the head aro re placed by a horny violet or purplish structure, usually somewhat larger than the kernel. Where ergot Is pres ent rye should not follow ,rye in the rotation, and seed tree from ergot should bo sown. It 1-s dangerous to feed ryo containing ergot to live stopk. Many growers separate ergot from seed ryo by putting tho grain into a 20 per cent brino solution. The ergot will float in tho salt water, but the ryo will sink. Those who used this simple treatment found that it did not affect germination, and tho rye could bo sown as soon as the surplus water had drained off. LENGTHEN LIFE OF A BINDER Machine Given Proper Care and Pro tectlon Will Last From Ten to Even Twenty Years. A binder left In the field from ono season to another will last at best three or four years, whereas with proper care a binder should do good work for 10, 15 or even 20 years. Tho same kind of thing may bo said of almost all farm Implements. Ileforo long, winter will bo here, levying Its tat upon farm 'Implements left in the open. This Is the time, therefore, to raakt &mib for housing farm machinery. The saving in tho vnluo of muchln- cry In ono year will almost pay for the cost of a good machine shed. LITTLE POINTS ON POULTRY Look for Vermin ail Chicks Provide Roomy Coops for the Flock Re move Broody Hens. Watch for head Hco on the chicks. If found, rub top of hoifd with a smull piece of lard freo from salt. Avoid crowding by keeping in small flocks and by providing roomy coops. Thin out If thoro aro too tnnny. Broody hens sjiould bo removud to Hint-bottomed coops as soon m dis covered. Leave them t'uoru until thuy forget It. COTTONSEED CAKE IN FAVOR Has Almost Two-Thirds Value of Meal Accordlno to Test Made at Mis sissippi Station. On most of tho northern markets, thero are for sale cottonseed meal, containing 8S to 40 p5r cent" protein, nt $30 to Jf-15 per ton, nnd cold pressed cottonscod cake, containing 20 to 20 per cent protein, at ?30 to 35 per ton. Most of our dairymen, for some rea son, have given tho preference to cot tonseed menl, although many steer feeders prefer the cottonseed cake. It la Interesting to note that tho Missis sippi stntlon has conducted a feeding test with dnlry cows, comparing cot- .tonsecd menl with cold pressed cotton seed cake, the Indications being that cold pressed cottonseed cako has al most exactly two-thirds tho value, pound for pound, of cottonseed meal. With prices as they now prevail, dairy men nro no doubt Justified In prefer- lng cottonseed meal to cold pressed cottonseed enkc. ESSENTIALS FOR FALL PIGS Select Good Individual Sows of Pure bred Stock Havo Separate Houses for Farrowing. First nnd very important in having geod fall, plga one must select good in dividual sows of some good purebred stock. These must bo bred to u pure bred male of same stock. The second Important thing Is to havo tho sows fnrrow about tho first week in September, then they got n good start before sevoro weather seta la nnd everyote knows cold wenther Is worso on little fall pigs than oc spring pigs, they feel the change more. Always hnvo Individual hoghouses If possible. Sows when separated and put ench one in its own lot nnd house a week or ten days before farrowing time will he better contented after far rowing and each can tnko good care of their young. FILL SILO WITH DRY FODDER Can be Successfully Used If Water Enough to Moisten Ie Added While Being Filled. Corn fodder can be successfully cut Into the silo If water enough to mois ten It is ndded at the time of filling. Tho water Is best run into the cutting box with n hose which moistens tho fodder evenly. When corn hns been badly frosted before cutting It is also necessary to add about one-third its weight in wa ter when filling tho silo. After tho sllnge has settled the silo may be filled up with dry fodder moistened in this way. PLAN FOR STARTING PLANTS Commonest Method In Northern States Is by Means of a Hotbed They Are Easy to Make. Tho commonest method of starting early plants In tho northern states is by means of a hotbed. They arc slm pie nnd easy to make and are regarded ns a necessity for very early garden work. Methods differ in various local- Hotbed Plan. ities. Tho cut shown here Is taken from ono of tho department of ngrlcul ture bulletins and a bed made after this manner will prove successful Tho best gardens will havo a perma nent hotbed that may bo used season after season with but llttlo repair. All farmers should have a silo. Cows need succulent feed In fall and winter. Puro wnter and cholco feed for the cows Is the first need. Keep all milk vessels scrupulously clean with hot water and soap. Itegulurlty In milking, like regular ity in feeding, is what counts. Tho cucumber vines will continue bearing if you keep the cucumbers plckftl. It Is hard to tell n water glass egg from a fresh egg, If tho former Is prop erly kept. Now Is a good time to make up the list of vegetables and the quantity of each wanted for next ycar'n garden. Follow up tho premium won nt tho state or county fair with a llttlo judi cious advertising. It will help roako sales. We certainly must bow before wo can expect to reap. This applies us truly to beekeeping as to any other line I of business- HOW TO IDENTIFY CHICKENS Where Fowlt In Neighborhood Are Much Alike It Is Excellent Plan to Paint or Dyo Them. Neighbors living close to each othci grow chickens which nro very roues alike. Often each party thinks tho oth er Is in possession of some of his bird! and troublo begins. In order to avoid this, ono neighbor will get somo blach chickens becauso his neighbor hai white ones. 1. Hens in adjoining yards, if thoj get through tho fence, otten mani their homo In tho now quorters. 2. Different varieties In adjoining breeding yards nro In great danger ol becoming mixed. 3. All birds in any community which are apt to range together should be one variety properly branded. A good grado of dye or paint is the best method of marking the birds to bo detected at Bight, different people using different colors. If all aro grow- Inc whlto birds, ono person can use red on his birds, another blue, nnothci green, etc., placing the color on the wings and tall so they can bo seen nl n distance. This gives quick ldentlli- cation of the birds, and In addition tc helping neighbors to identify thcli own birds, will help control wholesale chicken thieves, becauso of this Identi fication. TEST WITH WHITE LEGHORNS In Experiment at Pennsylvania Station Five Pens of Pullets Fed Allko Except as to Protein. In a test by the Pennsylvania sta tion five pens of Whlto Leghorn pul lets were fed alike except as to tho protein feeds allowed. Pen 1 received meat scrap, or animal protein, and penB, 2, 3, -1 nnd 5.33 per cent of soy bean meal, gluten menl, Unseed oil White Leghorn Pulleta. meal and cottonseed meal, respective ly, In n dry mash. All pens received the ordinary grain mixture. It was ob served that during the first year tho mortality was high in tho pens receiv ing the ollmcnl and the cottonseed meal. A number of the birds apparent ly broko down under the strain of tho highly concentrated rations. Five pens of 50 Whlto Leghorn pul lets each were fed alike except ns to succulent feeds. Pen 1 received a commercial product, succulent tab lets; pen 2, dried beet pulp; pen 8, mangel beets; pen 4, sprouted oats, and pen 5, no succulents of any kind. Tho total egg production for tho year was 4,432, 4,070, 5,347, 5,517 and 4,280 for the respective lots. HOW TO SELECT THE LAYERS Good Test Is to Watch Fowls Going to Roost at Night Cull Thoso Having Small Crops. Tho ordinary person, who does not uso trap nests nnd only has a few hens, should notlco tho hens that go on tho roost first nt night. They arc not tho profitable members of the flock. Another good test can bo made after tho liens nro on tho roost. Feel of their crops. The ones that havo largo, well-filled crops aro tho producers of eggs. Cull out tho ones with small crops. FOR SUCCESS WITH POULTRY Fowls Must Be Kept Comfortable to 8ecure Best Results Afford Ample Protection. No success can bo obtained tvltb poultry unless Uio fowls uro kept com fortable. A fowl drenched with rain is not comfortable. A man caught In a rainstorm can change his clothing nnd thus suvo catching a cold, but a fowl must allow her clothing to dry on her. No fowl can stand a constant ex posure to inclement weather, und tho more wo protect them tho bettor will hq the results. ARE YOUR KIDNEYS WEAK?
