EVEN PERIODS FOR MILKING

Cows Thus Milked Gave More Milk In
Evening Than In Morning Ef
fect of Phosphates.
An English experiment station has
lcflnltcly determined that tho total
quantity of milk Is not Influenced by
equal or unequal periods of milking,
hut that tho fat pcrcentngo Is mate
rially altered by the length of time
between morning and evening milk
"ings. Cows milked at even periods
gave moro milk In the evening than

tulned cither on tho quantity or qual

this material had no effect on the

TREATMENT FOR LEAKY TEAT
Forty-Penny Spike, Rounded Off to
Point and Applied While Hot Will
Prove Effective.
Many good cows are butchered be
cause they milk so easily that the
pressure In the udder during a big
milk flow causes the teats to leak.
Leaking teats can usually be Iden
tified by the conenve depression nt
the milk opening. Hurd milkers have
n convex surface around the orifice.
To stop a cow's teat from leaking, tho
best method I have found Is to file a
40-penny spike, round off the point,
heat tho end hot enough to sear, and
press it gently into the milk orifice,
says a writer.
Hold In place till the cow Informs
you that you have done enough. It
Is better to repeat the operation than
to do too much at the first trial. The
burn will nearly always cure readily
as the result of the soothing Influence
of the milk, but If it is slow in healing,
grease with salve. When the scar
forms around the milk orifice, it con
tracts tho opening and prevents the
milk from leaking.
CLEANLINESS OF THE DAIRY
Vital Factor In Successful Production
of Milk Rack for Sunning Cans
Is Illustrated.
Cleanliness Is n very vital factor in
the successful production of milk. The
illustration shows a simple sunning
rack for milk cans and utensils. Any
farmer can quickly construct this rack.
All you need Is a few 2-by-4s and 1-by-4s.
The framework is of 2-by-4s and
tho braces are l-by-4s. Tho cut shows

an end view and the length will depend
on tho number of cans and utensils to
bo sunned. The rack should be ad
justable to the direct rays of the sun.
Tills Is accomplished by tho uso of an
iron bolt In securing the horizontal
pieces at their intersection, with the
upright 2-by-4s forming tho pedestal.
For clean milk cans, wash first in cold
water, then steam (or scald, If steam is
not avallablo), then uso tho sun rack.
THOROUGH COOLING OF MILK

Prompt and thorough cooling is ono
of tho Important steps In the caro of

by Co-Operation.
Every spring-wheat grower wants
to know whether to grow common or
durum wheat on his farm. A study
of tho dlngram shown will help to
answer tho question.
The dlngram shows wheat yields nt
17 experiment stations- In tho great
plains area. Theso results wero ob

ral experiment stations, partly by the
United States department of agricul

For each station tho figure shows
a series of vertical columns, shaded
in different wnys. Tho number of
columns In ench case shows tho num

Preston (heavy slanting Hues), and
bluestem (dotted lines).
Tho study of tho illustration tells
somo things very plainly. Hero they

MOLES DEVOUR MANY GRUBS
Dill of Fare Also Includes Earth
worms, Cutworms and Other In
sects, but Not Potatoes.
Before you kill the mole let him
have a big dinner of grubs, if you
would follow the suggestion of J. E.
Guthrie of Iowa state college, who has
found that ground moles will cat more
than their weight of grubs In ono day
If they cun find them. The mole's bill
of faro also includes earthworms, cut
worms and various Insects, but not
potatoes which he Is sometimes ac
cused of eating. Of course, severo
measures are necessary and he humps
up tho lawn, but unless ho so con
ducts himself It is evidently better to
leave him to his grub-consuming activ
ities. Ilolllng lawns will often dis
courage the operations of moles.

CLEANLINESS IS BIG FACTOR
Plenty of Fresh Air and Liberal Use

Cleanliness is the most important
factor In tho successful raising of

HAY SUPPLY OF IMPORTANCE

CELERY OF HIGHEST QUALITY
Spraying to Prevent Blight and Rust
Is of Utmost Importance Much
Work Required.
Ono aero of celery properly cared for
represents a lot of work, extending
from tho time of planting tho seed In
tho greenhouses or hotbed, transplant
ing tho plants, setting them In Uie
open field, wntering, cultivating, spray
ing, harvesting, bunching nnd market
ing. But tho returns from a bumper
crop of, say 40,000 head from tho acre,
averaging 50 to 00 cents a dozen heads,
pays well for tho labor and care be
stowed on this crop.
""Spraying to prevent blight and
rust is of the utmost importance to In
sure a good yield of best quality cel
ery." So says Samuel Beach, a Cana
dian truck grower. Ho uses bordeaux

spraying materlnls Is considerably
higher since tho war began, but Mr.
Bench finds that tho spraying cannot
be omitted, even wero the cost of spray
ing mnteriuls several times as high as
they aro at present.
SERVICE FROM DOUBLE GATE

Tho ranking of tho double gato on

that a lfl-foot gato Is to be built, nnd

all' In ono piece. It is then set in place
nnd tho four hinges aro mado fast, the
post well tamped, and the gato Is then
sawed In two In the center (as showr
at A).
This method will bring both gates
on n line, and they will be sure to
close evenly. It Is a good plan to place
tho two center sldepleces about one
half inch apart, and make two saw
cuts, cutting out tho extra half-Inch
which will prevent the rain from swell
ing tho gate, which may prevent Its
closing evenly.

POULTRY
COLD STORAGE IS EFFICIENT
Recommended by Expert of Kansas
Agricultural College as Best Way
of Keeping Eggs.
Cold storage is the best way to pro
servo eggs, In tho opinion of F. E,
Musschl, Instructor in poultry hus
bandry In tho Kansas State Agricul
tural college.
"Many preparations are used foi
preserving cggs,'f says Mr. Musschl,
"but none nro ns efficient ns cold stor
age. Some persons uso sodium sili
cate, commonly known as water glass,
whllo others uso lard or one of the
many commercial preparations to pro
sorvo eggs.
"Theso methods of storing eggs pre
vent decomposition by bacterial action,
but do not Btop enzyme action. Tho
enzymes nrc always present in tho egg
and nro active nt ordinary tempera
tures. With good fresh eggs kept nt
tho proper storage temperature 31
or 82 degrees Fahrenheit enzymo ac
tion as well as bacterial action Is pre
vented. Three months Is n long time
to keep eggs nt room temperature yet
this Is what tho poultry department
has done."
In order to prove tho superiority of
lnfertllo eggs over fertile ones in keep
ing quality, Mr. Musschl kept n dozen
eggs In his ofllco for three months.
When examined nt the end of the
period they showed no signs of decom
position other than a Blight thinning
of the white (UuTyc-lk, and n faint
odor. These chuuges wero duo to tho
action of enzymes within tho egg.
ERADICATION OF RED MITES
All Night Pests Fill Their Bodies With
Blood From Fowls and Then
Hide In Daytime.
Tho red mlto is tho worst enemy
tho poultryman has to contend with,
nnd tho very hardest ono to fight,
This pest is very small and normally
Is grayish In color, but, moro often,
It presents n deep red color, be
cause of tho 'blood with which It Is
Qllcd.
Unless very numerous, the mites nro
seldom found on the hens. Tho pests
work on tho hens nt night, lining their
bodies with blood, nnd hide beneath
tho perches, and in cracks and crev
ices near the roosting quarters during
the day.
Whitewash is not very effective In
fighting tho red mite. A better spray
ing mntcrlal Is coal oil emulsion. This
Is mndo by dissolving half a bar of
laundry soap in hot. water and adding
half a gallon of coal oil. This mixture
can bo diluted with flvo gallons of
wnter. Tho emulsion Is best applied
with a spray-pump, for tho reason
thnt tho pump will put tho "uld in
cracks and crevices thnt could not bo
reached with a brush.
The Job of spraying must be very
thoroughly done. Soino of tho mites
will likely escape tho first spraying,
and for this reason it Is advisable to
repeat tho spraying In a few days, and
again in a week, to destroy tho inttes
thnt hatch from eggs.
WHY LEGHORNS ARE POPULAR
Food Cost Is Exceptionally Low and
Floor Space Is Less Test Made
at Cornell University.
The cost of egg production with Leg'
horns is exceptionally low according
to tests made at the Cornell unlver

On ono largo poultryfarm .the food

breeds nro used, and in addition to this
the floor space required for Leghorns
is less thnn that required for an equal
number of larger fowls.
Theso birds also cost less to ralsn
to maturity, and all of theso character
istics will result In effecting very im
portant saving in tho cost of food,
labor and equipment.
