SELECTING GOOD SEED i
Best Grade Is Produced Under
Favorable Conditions.
Look Over Various Parts of Field and
Murk Parts Wanted for 8eed
Should Be 8tored Separato
From Other Grains.
(By C P. BULL University Farm, St.
I'HUI.j
Tho very best Umo to got good seed
Is when It Is in the making. Good seed
Is like good live stock best when it
:omes of good ancestry and Is produced
under favorablo conditions. So It is
that somo parts of the fields arc better
than others for tho production of ma
ture, wcll-flllcd. sound seed ; whllo oth
er parts will produce n less valuable
product. Looking over tho various
parts of tho field before cutting, ono
may select tne parts 01 mo crop to uo
handled separately for tho next year's
seed supply. No extra work or "fuss
ing" will bo necessary before cutting.
The field may bo cut as a wholo and
shocked, but extra enro is necessary in
setting up shocks In tho "seed" part of
tho Hold. A 12-bundle shock with two
cap sheaves will withstand unfnvor
able weather and protect tho grain.
As soon as the grain is field-dry it
should bo stacked or threshed. Tho
seed grain should be put In n separato
stack and the cap sheaves should not
bo allowed In with tho other parts of
the shocks. They may go in with tho
feed or sale grain. When threshed tho
seed grain should bo stored separato
from other grain, thus keeping it un
mixed. When thus kept separato from
3old to bin it will bo ready nt nny time
for tho last analysis tho fanning mill
before sowing.
It is not an easy matter always to
Judge th Increased profit that comes
from saving seed grain in this manner.
Dllmate, soil and diseases have much
to do with tho apparent physical con
dltion of the crop, but In tho long
run, such saving of seed will give much
stamina to tho variety and increase its
yielding capacity.
CLIP YOUNG ALFALFA PLANTS
Practice Keeps Down Weeds, Encour
age Greater Growth and Develop
ment of the Roots.
Clipping the young alfalfa crop Is
considered a good practice. It keeps
doWi weeds which, if allowed to get
thelP full growth, might smother out
the yonng plants. It encourages tho
?roV'th of a more stocky plant and
greater root development. Set tho
sickle bar of tho mowing machine high
ind go over tho Held several times dur
.ng tho summer.
No hay crop should bo removed tho
irst year unless very early seeding
has been done on unusually rich soil
It is safest to leave a good growth on
:ho ground as a cover during the win
ter. Late summer seeding needs no
attention. Tho entire growth should
bo left ns a winter cover and should
oot bo grazed.

Where Scales Are Not Handy, Estl
mates or Feeding stuns Will Be
Found Quite Convenient.
In keeping records of feeding cows
or other animals scales should be
handy. But It may not bo necessary
to weigh every feed ns this might re
quire considerable tlmo and perhaps
not bo convenient owing to early and
late hours being used when n light
might bq required.
A good way to do this Is to weigh
n measure full of feed and estltnntc
tho weight by this measure. Ono can
estlmnto tho weight within close limits
In this way.
Frequently no scnles aro nt hnnd
when tho feeder is trying to fowl a
balanced ration. Tho following esti
mates of tho common feeding stuffs
will bn handy:
A quart measure of cottonseed meal
weighs 1.5 pounds; wheat bran
(coarse), .5 pound; wheat middlings
(coarse), .8 pound; wheat middlings
(fine), 1.1 pounds; mixed wheat feed,

SOLID FOUNDATION FOR SILO
There Should Be No Shoulder Left by

, to the Silage.
Tho first silo shown has a badly con

npproxlmntely correct. There should
be no shoulder left by the wall, ns
this causes spoiled silage. Tho founda

serious objection, though perfectly
Hush doors arc certainly un advantage.
A vertical wall is the only satisfac
tory wall to use, its a wall inclined out
ward will support tho silage to a cer
tain extent and prevent it settling sat
isfactorily, thus creating air pockets.
When tho wall is. inclined Inward the
silage will settle away from It In
tho enso of concrete silos with ta

LATE BLIGHT IS INJURIOUS
Disease of Potatoes Is Especially Seri
ous During Wet Seasons
Caused by Fungus.
Ono of the serious potato diseases is
the lato blight. This dlseaso Is espe
cially injurious during wet seasons.
Blight Is caused by a fungus which
lives over winter in the tubers. When
the diseased tubers are planted tl)e
mycelium of the fungus grows up
through th6 sprouts to tho surface ol
the ground whero spores aro produced
on the surface of tho stems nnd leaves.
Theso spores aro blown to other plants
where, with sufficient moisture, thoy
grow nnd enter tho tissues of the
plnnt, branching out In all directions
Many of tho spores fall to tho ground,
where they may Infect tho young
tubors. If the tubers nro dug while
tbo disease Is active on tho vines
largo numbers of spores come in con
tact with tho tubers and may produce
infection.
LIVE STOCK FAVOR ALFALFA
Not Generally Pastured for Reason
Plant Does Not Thrive No Seri
ous Danger of Bloat.
Alfalfa makes excellent pasture foi
nil kinds of llvo stock, but it Is not
generally pastured for tho reason that
It does not stand pasturing well if
heavily pastured with cattle. Light
pasturing, however, Is not objection
nblc. There Is no serious danger of
bloat If tho cattle are turned on grad
unity nnd In tho middle of tho day
and nfter they are pretty well filled up
on other pasture A sudden change ol
feed Is not well for hungry stock of
nny kind. You can pasturo your nl
falfa Rifely and get good results from
it, but If wo were anxious to keep the
field In alfalfa continuously and get
tho greatest yields possible we would
not pasturo It.
COTTONSEED AS DAIRY FEED
One of Cheapest Sources of Protein
Supply Amount Fed Dally 8hould
Not Be Larne.
(By R, S. HULCE3. Illinois Experiment
Station.)
Cottonseed meal is ono of the cheap
est sources of protein supply for dairy
cows. Only meal that is in good con
dition should bo used In a grain mix
ture. Since tho menl Itself Is very
rich concentrate, thb amount of cot
tonseed meal fed daily should ordi
narily not exceed threo pounds nnd
should be used as one of several feeds
in n grain mixture. Tho character of
the grain mixture thnt should h6 fed
will depend somewhat on the nature ol
the roughages being used.
