of tho call.
Last Sunday night it was our turn
to go on guard. Formal guard mount
ing was called off by reason of a
heavy rain bo guard was maintained
Informally. Thtf night passed very
quietly and without any excitement.
Last Friday our battalion took its
first practice march of fionio ten miles.
Every ono canio through in good
shape, no ono falling out during tho
ontiro march.
LaBt woek General Parker, comman
der' of tho BrownBVillo district, talked
to tho officers or tho Fourth and Fifth
regiments. Ho gavo us to understand
that wo woro not brought to tho bor

if it developed that wo woro not
needed that wo would bo sent homo at
once.
Our instruction Is in charge of a
regular army offleor who 1b detailed to
each regiment. Resides four hours

in tho evening thoro Is always a cool
hreczo mowing from tho gulf.
It might bo Interesting to know
that wo pay forty-five conts a pound
for butter, thlrty-flvo cents for eggs
and fifteen cents a quart for milk. On
tho other hand wo ttorchased two doz
en egg plants for tho company for
fifty-cento. This is a greut vogotoblo
country. Tho Hummer crop has boon
harvested and in a short tlmo they
win plant another crop for tho win
tcr markot. Last Friday wo saw, in
tho samo fluid, cotton being picked nnd
cotton growing, tho latter to ho pick
ed In tho fall.
With kindest regards to all. ,
