THE SEMI.WEEKLY TRIDONE. NORTH PLATTE. NE RASKA. Eradicate weed pest Canada Thistle Was Introduced . Here by Weans of Seed. Only Effectual Way of Killing Is by Starvlnfl to Death Underorountl Stems Another Method Is by Cutting It Close. There Is probably no weed pest In the land thnt has been more heartily condemned than has the Canada this tle, says Wisconsin Agriculturist. It Is one of tho weed scourges of Europe, jnnd was introduced here by means of seeds. It Is different from tho tall .thlstlo or common thistle on account of Its deep running perennial root stalks, which usually Ho below tho reach of tho plow. This thlstlo also lias moro slender stems and small compact heads. From tho root stalks .below tho surface, there nro being con stantly sent up branches which form young plants, as shown In the lllus- Canada Thistle tratlon. Those young shoots will push up through two or three feet of heavy clay soil. Tho raw plants produce only leaves tho first year, dying down to tho surface In the winter, and produc ing (lower stems the second year. Where Canada thistles get u bad start they soou.-posscss the ground. smothering out native grasses, and covering an area which Is avoided Iry grazing stock. Tho only effectual means of killing out this pest is to starve out or kill the underground stems. The starving method Is the most successful. No plant can live long If the leaf stalks are kept cut off nt tho surface and mowing or close cutting three, times In June, August, nnd September will bo a good way to begin the battle. Salting and sheep grazing for two sensons afterward has been known to finish the work. In cultivated fields, cut the thistles when In bloom, close to the grouud, then plow deeply and sow to millet or Hun garian. Harrow thoroughly and seed thickly. Cut the hay in September und seed to rye. The next May plow Hinder tho rye nnd plant to corn or any hoed crop. The field can be cleaned up by this method. IMPORTANCE OF PURE WATER Large- Amount la Required by Average Dairy Cow for the Upkeep ot Bodily Functions. A largo amount of water Js needed by the avorago dairy cow for tho up keop of bodily functions. In addition to this, much moro is needed in tho production ot milk, as the latter con tains 87 per cent of water. Practical dairymen have found that it Is a good policy to provide tho cow with plenty of good, clean water. This Is especial ly true during oxtremoly hot weather. That llowlng through a muddy ditch it not suited for a dairy cow. It is also important that tho water bo of a mild tomporature, especially in cold weathor. Ico water taken into tho stomach of the cow causes a shock to tho system that Is not conduclvo to high milk production. Tho tempering of this cold water In tho cow uses some ot tho energy that might bo ap plied to other purposes. In tho winter, freshly pumped water is much bettor than tho cold water in tho tank. Tank heaters aid in overcoming this trouble, A cow will drink a much larger quan tity of warm water in the winter time than ot ico water. OVER-PASTURING IS COSTLY Field Robbed of Growth of Grass and Abundance of Feed Taken From Live Stock. By over-pasturing we rob the field of Its growth of grfirfs, and we rob tho (stock of tho nbundance of fed they need. A good practice It to pasture three head of live etock where vr? or dinarily keep four, ays Guy R Mor rlson. extension specialist In live stock, South Dakota stuto college. In England, wbero wo nil look to see better live stojk r.nd where pas ture rentals run ng high as $150 per acre per year, wc find the cattle knee rtenn in a mixed grns pastui. In place the beet type of -cattle has dls appeared, being replaced by the dairy type. We Americans can draw n lesson from this. It gives us the Idea that If we will use discretion In the pas turlng of our fields and manuring them, wo would hnvo limitless possl btlltles, still, for the growing ot u high grade beet cutti MANGE IS ERUPTIVE DISEASE Horse Is Kept In Constant Stato of Irritation, Soon Causing Him to Lose Flesh. Mango Is an eruptive disease com mon with horses that Is very eon- aglous. It Is caused by repeated at tacks of minute Insects which burrow into tho skin and can be seen easily by means of a magnifying glass. A horse troubled with mango Is kept In a constant state of irritation which soon causes him to reduce in Ilesh. He rubs his head nnd neck against the stall or manger, small pimples appear, the hair falls off and the skin is dry and hard. Treatment for mnngo con sists in separating the affected animal from tho other untnmls nnd Uiorougbly washing It with soup and water every second or third dny. Afterwards dress the nnlmnl with this application : Four ounces of linseed oil, four ounces of oil of tar and three ounces of sulphur. Mix nnd rub into affected parts. All clothing, hnrncss, etc., which hnvo been used on a horso affected with the mange should bo cleansed good before they ure used again. WAYS OF HANDLING MANURE Easy to Figure Out How Spreader Will Pay for Itself In Compara tively Short Period. Hero Is the way three farmers han dle immure: One hauls his manure and dumps It In plies to save the washing. Another spreads it on the wagon, while tho third uses a manure spreader. . It takes Farmer A and li 21 minutes to put on a ton loud of manure. It takes Farmer C 18 min utes. In unloading, Farmer A requires 32 minutes; Farmer B, '23 minutes, and Farmer C, two minutes. To take a load of manure to the field nnd un load requires 01 hours for A, CO for B and 29 for C. Considering labor, teams and tools, the cost for A is 44 cents n load, or $88 for 200 loads ; B, 40 cents n load, or ?S0 for 2CO doads, and C, 20 cents a load, or .$40 for 200 loads. One can soon figure up tho value of a manure spreader and how quickly this tool pays Its cost. These figures ure ac tual facts and they may be verified by any farmer In his own vicinity. CONTROL SQUASH-VINE BORER Cut Out Affected Parts of Vines and Harrow Infected Fields Lightly In the Fall. The squash-vine borer, which de stroys melons, cucumbers, squashes and pumpkins by boring through tho stems of the plants, and through the leaf stalks, is a hard pest to control. Spraying does no good. About the Squash-Vine Borer a, Male Moth; b, Female; c, Eggs; d, Full-Grown Lar va in Vine; e, Pupa; f, Pupal Cell. only way to gqt rid of It Is to cut ou tho affected parts of the vines. If your crop Is Injured this year, plant vines In a different place next year. Harrow tho Infected fields lightly in tho fall, and then plow at least six inches deep In the spring. Or you may cover tho vines with earth here and there, while growing, so that now roots will put out, and If the borer cuts off the plant from the original root It will still live. Furm Life. KEEP HORSE STABLES CLEAN Practice of Removing Litter Only Once Every Week Is Worthy of Strong Condemnation. Tho custom on many farms of clean ing the barns, especially the horse stnbles, only once every week, ten days or two weeks, is to bo con demned. It takes but a very few min utes to clean the horse stable eacli day, nnd benefits received from so do ing are far in excess of the labor In volved. Not only do the animals have cleaner, healthier and moro comfort able quarters, thus minimizing the likelihood of dlsense, but there Is an actual saving in bedding, and In time used in making the horso presentable by use of the currycomb and brush. An up-to-date litter carrier is a fast tlmo nnd lnbor saver and a stable thus equipped Is much moro likely to bo kept clean. GOOD MILK COWS ESSENTIAL They Provide Cheapest, Best and Most Wholesome Food for Family Value Hard to Estimate. Tho first reason for having good milk cows on tho farm comos from tho fact that they provldo tho cheap est, best, and most wholesomo food for tho family. Their value is hard to estimate when wo consider tho amount saved on tho bills. Their prod uce Is a superior substitute for many foods necessarily purchased at high prices. In fact, thoro Is no economic way of doing without plenty of good milch cows on tho farm. Chilling Causes Trouble. Chicks that get wet ure ulraoat In variably chilled and chilling Is likely to b followed by digestive troubles. I w n Designers That Are Noted for Originality Have Given Their Atten tion to the Bathing Suit, With Results That Need Only to Be Appreciated New "Swagger Sticks" Greatly In Popular Favor Just at This Moment. At last tho time has come when n regulation, practical swimming suit Is good to look upon. If nnyone doubts that It Is possible to look pretty when emerging from a morning dip let her contemplate tho picture here. So far as her clothes arc concerned,, tho maid tuny bo said to have on a most becom ing outfit, ns full of style as any other of her apparel may be. Tho suit pictured is of black nnd black-and-white striped satin, nnd Is mndo up of roomy bloomers of striped snUn, reaching to the knees and, with a rather wide frill at tho bottom, nnd a one-piece overdress cut In an easy fitting Princess style. The bodice Is cut with short kimono sleeves lined with the striped satin, and a border of It outlines tho V shaped neck. Tho skirt is open nt the sides In a slit that Is rounded at the bottom. It Is finished with a cord cov ered with the plain satin nnd reaches a little below tho knees. The stockings are of black silk with pin stripes in white, nnd tho shoes of black cloth are finished with white. When tho maid Is fully equipped for her plunge she will don a clnse-llttiug satin cap of black or black-and-white satin and It Is likely to bo provided with a visor or something In the way POPULAR "SWAGGER STICKS." of a Uttlo shade for the eyes. Under it she may wear a close cn'p of rub ber cloth or sho muy select one of tho many rubberized enps or bats which the season provides. Ccrtnlnly no girl r.enlly needs a "swagger stick," and Just us certainly every girl wants one or will as soon ns sho sees them. Theso breezy Uttlo accessories have no excuse for being In our midst nt all except thut they aro pretty und nnnounco vhnt their youth ful wearers ure out, for u walk und oman s rxeaim may possibly need n little help or sup. port. For, whatever else her girl ship may consent to do without in this ungenerous world, sho simply will have a vanity bag. UDDER DEVELOPMENT OF COW Sufficient Importance Not Placed on Dairy Characteristics by Dairy Cattle Owners. Many ovvnorn of dairy cnttlo do not placo sufficient importnuco on tho purely dairy characteristics of tho an imals thoy koop and breed. Ono of tho points ofton overlooked is udder dovolopment, although it would sepm that this would bo tho first thing ni Intelligent dairyman would look for In tho selection of a cow. Whllo nn oc casional cow with a small, Ill-shaped udder will glvo a good quantity ot milk, such animals nro merely tho ox coptlons which prove tho rule thnt good dairy cows should show good do volopment of tho milk organs. Tho good udder is largo but docs not display its slzo by hanging in a Flno Type of Dairy Cow. low Invortod conical shapo. Such an uddor does not add to tho beauty and symmetry of tho animal and too ofton its dangling, swaying motion In travel is 'a sourco ot Irritation. It cannot possibly bo expected to glvo ns good results as a blocky compact uddor of equal slzo in each quarter and extend ing well to tho front and roar. Tho teats should bo ot sulllclont olzo to bo grasped firmly whllo milking. Thoy should bo set squarely on tho quarter and bo of cylindrical rather than conicnl shapd. Tho cow with a low hanging bag and conlcnl-shaped toata is not a cholco animal to milk and it will usually bo found that sho does not do well at tho pall. Pnrentago has much to do with tho conformity of tho cow's uddor, nnd whllo tho slro will lnlluenco this char acteristic to a certain extent tho func tion of tho uddor la not after his na turo nnd tho dam will liavo to bo, depended- upon largoly to porpotuato propor form In this regard. Practical oxpcrlonco will provo that a holfor calf will ordinarily havo In a marked degrco tho oxtornal milk organ char acteristics of hor dam. It Is thcroforo doubly desirable that In tho selection of breeding stock closo nttontlon bo paid to tho uddor development. VARIETY OF FEEDS FOR CALF When Animal Is Four Weeks Old It Can Get Along Without Milk Gruel Answers Purpose. After a calf la four weeks old- It iian got along vory well on Uttlo or no milk If you aro short. Mako a gruel out of a varloty of feeds, say corn meal, oil meal, middlings, bran, grouud oats; mix thoin all together and cook a kettlo of It, having about tho con slEtency of gruel. At first feed a pint of this In threo quarts ot warm wator, Jncrenso to a quart of tho gruel. In addition, glvo tho calf clovor hay nnd onsllago If you havo It; In fact, any roughago you happen to havo. Also begin to feed It comment and ground oats us soon ns It will cat. SUMMER WORK IN THE DAIRY Nothing Moro Unpleasant Than When Pastures aro Short and the Files are Troublesome. At no tlmo of tho yoar Is dairying Tioro unpleusaut work than during the tlmo when pastures aro short and the flics nro troublesome. Now is tho tlmo when It pays to havo supplemental forngo crops and to darken tho Btuhlcs and keop the cows lnsldo during tho hottest part of tho d,y. Tho cold weather during tho win ter is less difficult to contend with than tho hot sun nnd lllos during the summer. COWS REQUIRE MUCH WATER Animals Should Havo Access to Sup ply at Least Twlco Dally Well Water Is Best. Milking cows roqulro a much inrgot quantity of water than Is necessary tot growing animals. Thoy should havo access to a good clean water supply at least twlco a day, Tho host supply Is well wator pumped Into a tank or trough, falling this a running stream 1b boat. REFUSES TO GET EXCITED Mrs. Midge Considered Information From a Point of View That Was Perfectly Utilitarian. Mr. Midge took an extraordinary do light In digging little factH out of tho papers and holding forth on them to his wife. Ono evening, ns they snt togother, sho sewing and ho rending, a smoth ered grunt of sntlHfactlou wnmcd Mrs. Mldgo that her husband had dis covered something which ho consid ered Interesting.
