JEFFERS NEW GENERAL
MANAGER FOR TJIE U. P.
An official clrpular Igsuod from
Union Pacific hoadquartors Saturday
morning, signed "by A. IL MWilor,
president, announced tho appointment
of Wi 'M. Joffersv tt former North
Platto boy, general manager of tho
Union Pacific to succeed Charles
Ware, resigned. The offlcal dutlos of
Mr. Joffon becamo effective yesterday.
While the appointment was mado by
Prosldont Mohler, who retires July
1st, It was done after ho conferred
with Mr. Calvin, wIvt will succeed him
as prosldont. Mr. Jeffore had been gon
oral superintendent for several months
nnd that office, while not nbollshed,
will bo vacant for an Indefinite period.
Tho promotion of Mr. Joffors to be.
gonoral manager of ono of tho groato!
railroads In Uie world and with which
ho began his sorvlco as mossengnr
boy In this city Is particularly
pleasing to Tho Tribune as well as to
all his frlondB In North Platto. As a
boy "Hill" Joffors' advantage were
no greater than surrounds tho avorage
boy, but ho wan industrious and am
bitious; ho had a dosiro to do his
work woll. As a messenger boy he was
active, as a telegraph oporator stud
ious, as train dispatcher enroful, as
trainmaster ho guvo ovldonco of his
oxecutlvo ability. IIo was appointed
assistant superintendent of tho Wy
oming division whon that section of
tho Union Pnclflc was in a chaotic
condition. A month aftor ho took
hold conditions improved and contin
ued to improve. Corporations aro not
slow to recognlzo meritorious work,
and nftor a fow yeare as assistant,
Mr. Joffors was mado superintendent
of tho Wyoming division. In tho moan
tlmo that part of tho road tho m!ot
difficult to hundlo on tho system had
been brought up to tho highest stan
dard of maintenance and operation,
tho moralo of tho employes had been
wonderfully Improved, land tho oper
ating expenses reduced. "BUI" Jeffcrs
hnd mado a record that was known
not only In headquarters In Omaha
but with tho directors In Now York.
Then camo a call for Mr. Jcffors as
gonoral superintendent; now he is
general manager.
"Watch Bill Jcffors Climb," remark
ed Tho Tribune moro thnn n dozen
years ago; and the inferred prediction
has como truo. Somo day ho will be
president of tho Union Pacific then
perhaps his cup of ambition will bo
run.
