Where Farmers Have Reason to Doubt Viability of Seed, Germinating Test In Recommended by Government Expert. Testing seed com for Bormlnatlon always n profitnblo farm practlco is n absoluto necessity this year in many sections. In a number of dis tricts tho last corn crop from which seed for planting will be taken was lato In maturing or so moist when har vested as to call for special precau tions. A high moisture content makes seed corn particularly susceptlblo to damage from freezing or heating. While complete testing for germina tion should tako placo shortly boforo tho seed Is plantod, the specialists of tho United Statos department of agri culture believe that It will be simple forohandednoss for farmers who havo any reason to bo doubtful about tho viability of their seed to make a pre liminary gormiuatlng test with a fow typical ears taken at random from tho rack. If these preliminary tests show that tho seed is good, tho owner tmn can continuo his precautions to guard It from weathor damage If, however, this test with a fow ears indicates that tho seed Is of low vitality, tho farmer should at onco mako further tests to satisfy himself as to whether his seed corn generally Is good or bad. If-a farmer finds his seed is bad, he should tako steps at onco to meet the difficulty. The farmer should secure his seed from well known sources, buy it upon a germinating guaranty basis Do Not Plant Corn From Eare Llko These. rod get his seed or typical samples early enough to mako his own germi nating tests. It tho farmer happens to havo a stock of seed left over from year be fore last and doubts tho seed from last year's crop, ho would do well to test the older seed also and then uso whichever bIiovb tho greater vitality. Seed corn If properly cared for will retain Its vitality for sevoral years, Many farmers knowing this always select an extra amount of seed from any unusually good harvest. The following method of testing seed corn is takon from Fanners' Bulletin 704: Tho corn 1b placed on drying racks made by driving wlro finishing nails about four inches apart on four sides of a stick. A number is placed over tho nail and tho butts of tho ears aro put on tho nails. If wire fencing or other seed racks aro used tho cars can be numbered in other ways. In single ear testing, two kernels from opposite sides ot tho ear on tho top, two from the middle and two from tho butt aro put in numbered Bquares or portions of gorminatin boxes or other testers. The kernels aro kept moist at a room temperature not bolow 90 degrees Fahrenheit, nor bolow 60 degnoes Fahrenheit. After six or seven dtys tho seed should be gin to sprout. Only those ears from which all tho kernels glvo strong Bprouts should be reserved tor plant ing. SPROUTED BARLEY FOR HENS Good Substitute for Oats and Easily Handled Green Food Is Desirable for Youno Chicks. It ono is having troublo getting sat fsfactory growth in oat sprouts or get ting tho oats to sprout at all, perhaps the seed has been treated with too much sulphur for tho smut. A man In Now Hampahlro roportB that his treated oats molded and would not sprout. Darley makes a good substltuto for jats to produce green poultry food in tho winter aDd oarly spring beforo nature furnishes greon vegetation out doors. Tho barloy may bo Bprouted about llio same as oats, the Bced being soaked in warm water 24 hours and then spread out tho thin layers sprouting tlnB or on shelves, whero moisturo and heat may bo provided Green food Is especially deslrabl tor part ot the ration of young chicks as It holps to keep tholr digestlvo or gans healthy and "ids their appetites, Need of Green Food. Thero is all tho moro need of green food toward tho ond of winter to got tho fowls in condition to lay fertile eggs for hatching. Socond quality cabbago, mangels, spocked apples, or anything ot that kind, will do. Burn the Dead Chicks. The best thing to do with dead Jhlcks is to burn them up as soon as found. WARMTH FOR LITTLE CHlttKS Temperature In Brooder Kept Close to 100 Degrees During First Week, Then It Is Reduced. Tho advent ot oovcrnl hundred brooder chicks moans that nil other plnns are subservient to them for tho first two weeks of their Ufa. Wo plan ahead so that tho household work ced not intcrfcro in any way with giving thorn full caro, especially for tho first four or flvo days, says a writor in an exchange Wo have found that when wo can keop our chicks growing steadily until bIx weeks of ago thero is llttlo troublo afterward. Warmth is of first lmportanco for those downy babies. With a valuable hatch wo exnmlno tho tcmporaturo several times each night until flvo days of ago. Wo koop tho tcmpora turo in tho brooder closo to 100 do grecs during tho first week, and ro duco this about ten degrees during tho Bccond weok. After tho third week, if tho chicks are well grown and tho weather Ib moderate, wo placo them In a tireless brooder heated only with jugs and cans of hot water. Theso brooders consist of a stout framowork six inches high, which is placed over plenty of chaff on tho floor of tho brooder houso. Over this is placed looBoly nn amplo covor of burlap bo that it touches tho floor about tho sides and sinks down in tho center so as to rest on tho floor. Under UiIb burlap tho chickens lovo to crawl. During tho day one Jug or can of hot water Is kept undor each broodor to oncourago tho chicks to enter whon tired. At night onough nro used if tho weather Is cool so that they can all got near tho heat. If there is a tendency toward piling up It indicates that thero is not sufllclent heat. When sufficiently warm tho chicks sproad out ovenly about tho brooder. Tho burlap while retaining tho hoat yet admits fresh air. Tho chicks use theso brooders until old enough to roost on low porches. INSECTS HELP RAISE CROPS? Many Plants Are Pollinated Chiefly by Buj8 Wind Also Playo an Important Part. (By W. W. rtOBBINS. Colorado Agrlcul- turai uoucge, iort (Jomns, coio.) It Is well known that most of oui crop plants will not form fruit and seed unless the flowers are proporly pollinated. Tho principal carriers ol pollen aro wind and Insects. In some plants, such as tho beet, both wind and insects play an important part in tho spread of pollen. In all ceroo.li and grasses, and in the potato, the pollen 1b carried mainly by wind. In most of our common plants of garden, field and orchard, insects-nro the chief and most effective carriers ot pollen. Tho following Is a Hat of inoect-pol-linntcd plants: Onions, asparagus, buckwheat, goosoborry, currant, cab bago, radish, turnip, raspberry, black berry, strawberry, apple, pear, plum, cherry, peach, alfalfa, clover, melons, cucumbers and squashes. Wo are very dependent upon the bees and other Insects for a good crop yield. MANURE LOOSENER IS HANDY Tool Contrived by Progressive Young Farmer for Using Horse Power to Tear Up Manure. Here is a sketch of a tool contrived by ono of our progressive young farmers for using horso power to teai up stable manure that haB become Manure Loosener, to Be Pulled by One Horse. packed undor tho cattle and sheep that are fed looso in tho barn, writes J. M. Hare of Illinois in Farmers' Re- viow. It is hard work to tear this up by hand and get It Into shape for oven spreading by the manure Bnrendnr. This man tried ono hook at first. and it helped him bo much, he made tho same tool with two hooka, and it saves him 50 per cent time and labor in separating and loading hiB manure spreader. Tho.hooks are made of 2x4-lnch steel bars. 18 to 20 inches in thn bond bolted to 3x3-inch or 3x4-Inch oak bars four feet long, and It has been found none too strong for ono horso. START FOR ASPARAGUS BEDS One-Year-Old Crowns Found Superior by Experiments at Pennsylvania College. Experiments at tho Pennsylvania stato college havo proved that one year-old asparaguB crowns aro suporl or to two-year ones. Growers can easily produce crowns from scud cheapor than they can buy as good ones. Moreover, they can select tho largo ones, which tho college has proved will yield far better than sec ond and third sizes. In a six-years' test on this point, the largo-sized crowns havo .produced $100 an aero moro a year than tho small-sized crown, so It will pay growers to throw away tho small ones when planting. Tho slight differonco in cost of large abovo small crown is returned many timos over each year as long as tho bod lasts, which H should, for fifteen to thirty yoara. 2 PLAN FOR RAISING GOSLINGS Hen Will Cover Only Five or 8lx Eggs, While Mother Goose May Hatch From 12 to 15. Geeso usually begin to lay In March, and It not allowed to sit will lay from 20 to 30 eggs each. Tho first goslings aro not hatched until the graBS begins to como in green. A hon will cover only flvo or six goose egga, whilo tho mother goose may hatch from 12 to. IS. Although tho period of Incubation averages 30 days, it will vary from 28 to 33 days. As tho time for hatching is half as long again as for hen's eggs, only hens that aro in good condition and kept free from ltco and proporly fed will Btay on tho nest long enough to bring off a good hatch. Slnco tho first gosling may appear as early as tho twenty-eighth day, and tho last ono not until tho thirty-third or thirty-fifth day, It Is a good plan to removo the goslings from tho nest I to a warm, flannel-lined basket as fast as they hatch. If this is not dono tho hon may become restless boforo tho hatch Is finished nnd lcavo tho nest. It is not wise to assist goslings from Flno Pair of Geese. tho shell. It Is important, howovor, to bco that tho eggs aro kept moist. When Incubator hatching all non- fertilo eggs aro removod upon testing, tho Blxth day. It Is important to know that gooso eggs need moro cooling than hen's eggs. After tho tenth day tho eggs aro sprinkled dally with luke warm water. INCREASING THE EGG OUTPUT Success In Poultry Business Depends Largely on Attention and Caro Given to Eggs. Keop tho hena' nests clean and havo plenty of nests. Gather oggB twico daily In warm weather and daily during other sou sons. Handle eggs as llttlo as possible, as handling deteriorates them. Market eggs of the correct sizo, 24 to 28 ounces a dozen. Cut out all very largo or very small eggs. Sell nothing but clean eggs; novei wash them for markot. Produco only infcrtllo eggs by ro- moving all roosters as soon as tho breeding period is over. Keep all eggs In a cool placo. Don't lot eggs como Into contact with vegetable or kitchen odors. Don't hold eggs too long, as thoy de teriorate rapidly; market at least twico a weok. Keop only ono breed ot chickens and raise eggs of ono color. Markot your eggs in clean, 30-dozon cases, or In cartons holding ono dozen eggs, depending on tho demand. Don't expose eggs to files and dust. Confine broody hens at onco and re move them to tho hatching depart ment. Never cxpoBe market eggs to tho direct rays of the sun, to extremo heat or rain. Keep poultry houses free from ver min. Food wholesome, clean feed and provide puro water in clean veBBels and often. Sell your eggs only to buyors, who buy losB-off and who aro willing to nay for quality. Disinfect the Coop. To keep down lico and mites Bpray tho roosts and walls ot tho chicken oop with a good disinfectant. If you cannot do this, you can at least clean out the coop and kerosene tho roosts woll with a rag on tho end of a stick. Tako tho same precautions with tho nests. Avoid Heat-Producing Foods. Caro should bo exercised to avoid feeding too much heat-producing foods, but wo should atrivo to main tain tho hreodlng unimals in a good, vigorous flesh-forming condition by foedlng them a ration made up ot cloan, wholesome blood, bone and muscle-forming foods. Guineas Prove Profitable. Guineas aro proving profitable with some of our farmers. Theno birds aro easy to rnleo and koop and furnish tho finest kind of fowl meat for tho tablo.
