THE SEMI.WEEKLY TRIBUNE. NORTH PI ATTE, NEBRASKA 1 HAS HAD HI CROPS And Likes the Laws in Western Canada. "1 lived near Lcc, Illinois, for 46 years. I camo to Saskatchewan In tho spring or 1912 and bought land near Brlcrcrent. I have farmed this land, 1680 acres, over since I have had grand crops. In 1914 I had 100 acres of wheat that yielded 40 bushels to tho ncre. I sold this whoat at $1.50 ler bushol. 1 llko tho country and my neighbours. M y taxes on each quar ter section (160 acres) aro about ?32 a year. This Thero Is No War Tax So Called. covers municipal tax, school tax, hall Insuranco tax everything. Thoro is no war tax so-called. I llko tho laws In force here. Thoro Is no compulsion to me in any way. I am Just as inde pendent hero as I was In Illinois, and I fcol that my family and I aro Just as well protected by tho laws of tho prov ince as wo were in our old homo In Illi nois. What I earn hero is my own. 1 have seven children and they take their places at school, in sports and at all public gatherings tho samo as tho Canadian born. (Sgd.) M. P. Tysdal. Our gov ernments, however, dominion and pro vincial, aro taking steps to oxposo the false statements that aro being made, and thereby keep tho channel open for continuing the stream of settlors that has been flowing to us for the past decade. "Youth Is tho rising sun of life, when ho thinks of what a heck of a feller ho Is going to bo; manhood is the sun at full me ridian, when ho Is satisfied that he is Indeed a heck of a feller; ago is the setting sun, when he sags around and brags about what a hock of a feller ho used to bo." Judge. STOP SCRATCHING! RESIN0L RELIEVES ITCHING INSTANTLY That Itching, burning skin-trouble which keeps you scratching and dig ging, Is a source of disgust to others, as well as of torment to you. Why don't you got rid of it by using Rcsl nol Ointment? Physicians have pro scribed It for over 20 years. In most cases, it stops itching instantly and heals eruptions promptly. It is very easy and economical to uso. Sold by all druggists. Adv. No Occasion to Worry. "My husband worries so over the amount of gas wo burn." "Tell him that is a matter to make light of." PREVENT RABBITS FROM INJURING TREES A Good Rabbit Trap (By D. C. MOOIUNQ.) Rabbits aro very particular as to what they eat, and feed only on vege table matter. They profor tho moro succulont kinds, such as vegetables, clover, alfalfa and fallen fruit When none of these foods aro available, they ofton oat tho bark of trees, especially when snow covors other food. It is very easy to provont rabbits from injuring trees, and all cases of damago aro duo to neglect rathor than to a lack of elllclent remedies. Your premises should not afford hiding places for1 rabbits such as brush pllos. This is not meant to includo groon cover crop in tho orchard. An or chard with a cover crop above the snow Is seldom if over injured. Traps aro very offectivc In catching rabbits. Tho moro traps you havo tho bettor. This is not so economical a method as poisoning for protecting tho troos, but lt furnishes nmusemont for tho children and also provides meat for tho tablo. Thoro aro two general ways of pol Boning rabbits. (1) Dy placing poi soned water in their runs, especially during dry weather. (2) By placing poisoned food whero they can got lt. The following, which was originally recommended by tho Ohio station, has given satisfaction: Ono part sulphate of strychnlno, ono-thlrd part borax, ono part whlto Boap, ton parts water. Shako well and apply to tender twigs with a brush or by dipping and dis tribute tho poisoned twigs around tho troeB. There havo been a number of washes and paints of various kinds recom mended as being effective against rab bits. Tho disadvantage of theso CONSTRUCTION OF A Serviceable Tester A shallow box filled with sand makes i scrvlceablo tester for corn. Near tho upper edge wires or threads are stretched in both directions, forming a number of squares. The box is filled with moist sand up to tho level of theso wires or threads, and on this sand the seed grains aro laid, and cov ered to keep from drying out. It is covered with muslin, drawn tightly and tacked, on which two-inch squarec, each ono numbered, aro marked with an indelible pencil. A box 20x40 inches would have 200 squares. A plain, moistoncd cloth Is placed TENT CATERPILLAR DOES MUCH DAMAGE Insect Was in Great Evidence Last Year, and Promises More Destruction This Summer. The apple tree catorplllar which was In great evidence last year Is promis ing moro destruction during tho com ing season. Prof. M. A. Cobb of the agricultural department of tho Cen tral Michigan Normal school finds that thero aro millions of egg masses fas tened on the limbs of tho fruit and forest trees. These masses can bo gathered and destroyed at this season of tho year, and lt will do much to roduco tho number of tho pests that come out noxt season. Last year many orchards wero near ly defoliated by tho tent caterpillar and largo apple trees wero found which contained frcm two to fifteen tonts. Tho groworv. jften burned thorn out with torches boforo they had con sumed all tho foliage on tho tree, but tho difficult work in thickly infested orchardB and whera tho egg masses can bo destroyed, that is tho surest way of reducing tho number of tho troublesome pest. Get Good Seed. Don't purchase the lowest-priced seed. In nino cases out of ten the highest-priced seed is by far tho cheapest. Tho seed doesn't cost much, aftor all, in proportion to tho labor put on plants, once they start. A full crop Is Important, and possible only with good seed. u Which Explains Itself. washes Is that heavy rains wash them off and make lt necessary to repeat tho application. It 1b not difficult to llnd or dovlso preparations which will kcop rabbits away. Rabbits aro vory particular about tholr food, andnny taint on tho trco will keep them from injuring lt. Tho following lins boon recommended by tho Oklahoma sta tion and found vory satisfactory: "Water, ono gallon; ono pound of soap; two to four ounces of carbolic acid." Somo prefer to add enough vermilion red to give tho mlxturo a good pink color and tho consistency of cream. This Is painted on tho trunk of tho trcoB with a brush or swab of rags tied to a stick. Another wash, which has given sat isfaction, is mndo by slacking ono peck of fresh stono lime with soap suds. Thin to tho consistency ot whitewash, add ono-half gallon ot crudo carbolic acid, four pounds sul phur and ono gallon of soft soap. Tho United States dopartmcnt of ng riculturo recommends tho Hmo-sluphur wash a3 giving satisfactory results. This wash consists of: Unslaked lime, 20 pounds; flowers of sulphur, 15 pounds; wator, 50 gallons. The lime, sulphur and ono-thlrd of tho water aro boiled together for one hour, and then tho rest of tho water is added. By add ing salt tho wash will stick bettor. Tho Arkansas experiment station has found that painting tho trunks of tho trees with whlto load and llnsoed oil gavo vory satisfactory results. Mixed palntB should not bo substituted ns they may contain oils which would injuro tho trees. Ono advantage of this mixture Is that ono application is sulllclcnt for tho entire season. SEED-CORN TESTER for Seed Corn. over tho kernels, and a sack made for tho purposo and partially filled with sawdust, about two Inches thick, is placed on top of tho cloth and pressed down firmly. The toster should bo placed where lt will bo held at ordinary room tem perature, or warmer, for five or six days. Tho oars from which tho four sam plesfour, fivo and six grains have been taken should bo arranged in sec tions of tens to correspond with sec tions of tester, and whore thoy will bo undisturbed after test is finished. DIVERSITY ON FARM IS MOST PROFITABLE Opportunity Given for Crop Rota tion and for Maintenance of Fertility of the Soil. (By AL.YA BENTON, Unlvorslty Farm. St. Paul, Minn.) Farm records Bhow, and good farm ers agree in general, that diversified farming Is most profitable. Diversified farming means raising llvo stock and various kinds of cropB. Diversified farming gives opportunity for crop ro tation, for distribution of man and horse labor, and for tho maintenance of soil fertility. All of those aro es sential to good farming. Crop rotation aids In maintaining crop yields and soil fertility; tho distribution of labor reduces tho cost of operation; tho maintenance of soil fertility is tho ba sis of all successful agriculture. Diversified farming is of great im portance becauso it gives tho farmer an opportunity to carry out all tho best farm practices. la your farming properly diversified? Cost of Farm Tractor. In considering tho cost of the trac tor on tho farm lt Is necossary to con sider tho items of oporatlon, efficiency, upkeop cost and possible length of service. Spray to Control Worms. Thero is no longer any moro ques tion regarding tho control of worms affecting apples, or other fruit. Spray ing will do tho work. OMENS ill m n mm FEEDING THE YOUNG TURKEY Breeder Should' Remember, First ol All, Never to Overfeed and Never Glvo Anything Spoiled. In feeding small turkoys, remember never to ovorfecd, and novor to food anything tho least spoiled. Feed ofton but vory llttlo at a time. Provldo grit nud charcoal. Plnhead oat meal and a llttlo millet aro also very good. Green food In tho form of finely Bllccd onion tops aro vory good, but must indeed bo fed vory sparingly. Keep tho turkoys cool, and above all, froo from lico and in clean sur roundings. Do not allow thorn to stroll through long grass early In tho morning, thus bocomlng exhausted and wet. FEEDING MILK TO CHICKENS Has Mbst Favorable Influence on Growth and Lessening of Mortal ity Average Among Flocks. Tho feeding of milk to young chicks has a most favorable Influence on tho growth, and on lessening tho mortal ity average. Sweet and sour milk aro of equal valuo In chick feeding. Tho degrco of sourness docs not affoct tho nutrltUo value. Chicks fed milk freely should havo abundant cxcrclBo. This applies par ticularly to early hatched or brooder chicks. In no way Is milk injurious, hut whether you feed sweet or sour milk, tho samo should bo fed continually until tho end of tho milk feeding period. Whichever Is most convenient, cdhoro to conBlstontly. SPROUTED OATS FOR WINTER Excellent Green Food for Chickens During Cold Weather How the Trick Is Performed. Sprouted oats havo proved an excel lent feed for chickens during wlntoi months. Tho oats may bo sprouted in a regular Bproutor, In trays by tho kitchen stove, in tho cellar, on dirt or on burlap. Tho trick Is to soak tho oats with wator, spread them out in tho light and keep them warm and moist until tho blades aro from three to six inches long. A successful feeder soaks tho oats for 24 hours, spreads thorn In a shal low box and places lt In tho collar. Frequently an Inch or moro of sand Is placed In tho bottom of tho box upon which tho oats aro spread. Watch Fowls Closely, Watch your flocks closely. It ofton happens that when mntod up, tho malo is not popular at least not generally. It is a common thing, to notlco somo females that persistently and success fully avoid tho malo placed with them, and a chango to another pen and malo produce a marked difference. If tlyiro nro such cases In your vards, try tho changing method. Don't Doctor Sick Fowls. As a gonoral rule lt does not pay to doctor sick fowls and lt Is much bet ter practice to pruvont disease than to euro it. Easy Flock to Manage. On tho avorago farm a flock of 100 to 150 hens Is moro easily mudo profit able than ono of a thousand. Pigeon Terms. Sudden Death Caused bj Diiease of the Kidneys Tho close connection between tho heart and tho kldnoys is well known nowaday. Whon kidneys aro diseased, arterial tension is lncroaaed and tho heart functions aro attacked. Whon tho kidneys no longor pour forth wasto, uremlo poisoning occurs and tho per son dies, and tho causo is often given as heart dlsoaso, or dlsoaBo of brain or lungs.
