Telephone Toll Rates
Telephone rates should depend upon what it
costs to produce the service.
In America we pay double the wages for the
same kind of telephone work that is paid in Eu
ropean countries. ,
Jtfearly all kinds of telephone material costs a
great deal more here than it does abroad.
American Rates Lower
For distances under fifty miles, within which
four-fifths of all long distance calls are made,
American telephone rates for the same service are
much lower than in European countries.
For longer distances and for messages between
countries, European telephone rates are from
three to four times as high as our rates for the
same distance in this country.
The long distance telephone service in Europe
is generally very poor. The farthest a toll call
can be made abroad is scarcely more than the
distance across one of our states.
