The havoc wrought among the 30, 000 Bhopmon whoso strike against the so-called Harrlman lines In 1011 was lost was sketched statistically this week before the United States com mission on industrial relations. The witness was Prank Comerford for many years nttornoy for tho nion One thousand question blanks were sent at random to tho strikers thirty four months after the strike. His ilg urca, Mr. Comerford explained, up plied to !thu!30 1,000 men, and ' lie thought that a fair social survey of tho whole numbor could bo obtained by multiplying his figures by thirty. Of tho 1,000 men whoses rcplys were checked up according to Mr. Comor ford, 18G wore single when tho strike was called Sept. 30 1911. There were 1,743 children, a small number which he thought might be traced to low wages and a subnormal scale of living Forty-two per cent of the men owned their homes, or wore buying them. Tho striko cost 15 per cent of these tholr homes and of the whole number 91 por cent moved from tlio lowly domiciles to even cheaper quarters. Twolvo por cent of tho strikers had to sell their furnlturo and 10 per cent to seek charity The averago period of idleness occasioned by tho striko waa ono year. Tho witness claimed that he had traced sixteen cases of suicldo to tho strike and nine cases of Insanity. Discuss Ilrldgo Complications. About fifty business men of the city wore present Tuesday afternoon at the court houso to discuss tho compli cations that havo. arisen regarding the lotting of tho contract for tho now bridge acfossB the Platte river east of the city. Tho mooting was called to order by E. V. Sooborgor, and after ho had outlined tho matters an lie understood thorn lie called for a discussion and County Attornoy G-ibbs told of tho mat tor as It stands. Mr Glbbs stated that tho delay in lotting tho contract was In no way tho fault of tho county com missioners anil attorney, us had been stated but that tho dllllcutlcs lay with tho stato board of Irrigation. It ap pears that tho now bridge ns proposed will bo built with certain arches and ro-onforcemonts that are patented and that tho patentee demands a royalty. Tho payment of this royalty was not specified In the plans and specifica tions and the Cnntdn Hrldge Co. which put In low bid did not flguro on tho paymont of the royalty. Thoy thore- foro refused to accept tho contract unless the county commissioners would Indomnlfy them against tho pay ment or mis royalty, a matter of about $3,000. Two nionihors of tho stato board of Irrigation havo signified their willing ncsB to assume their half of these roy altlcs If tho county will assume half, but tho third mourner, Attorney Gen oral Reed, has refused to do this. The bonrd also will not Incorporate this niattor within tho contract, but thoy promise to curry It out and tho Canton people will not work on n mcro promiso by representatives of tuc state. Tho questions before tho meeting was whether the county commission ers should bo Indemnified against porsonul loss should they contract to pay the county's share of tho royalty, or whether the Canton bid bo allowed to die, and tho contract awarded to tho Omahii company for a steel bridge,' or whether new bidB should bo askod. After much discussion, w. V. lloaglnnd presented the following resolution, which wao adopted "Resolved, That It la tho sense of tho North Plutto Chamber of Conmjerco and the citizens of North Platte that thctntiito Irrigation boaird nndhocoun ty commissioners of Lincoln county be requested to co-operate and insist up on the brldgo contract with tho Can ton Rrldgo Company as bid; that If necessary tho state and county guar antee tho brldgo company ncalnst nnv liability, for prftent royalties and that If Hie liability is established ono-half of tho royalties bo nald out of the state brldgo funds and the other half no paid out of brldgo funds votpd. And bo it furthor "Resolved, That a commlttco bo ap pointed by tho president of tho Clinm- uor or cominorco to go to Lincoln In CO-OPOmilOn With tho COtintv onmnila, slonora and tho county attornoy nnd prosont our views to the stato board of Irrigation and endeavor to settlo tho question. And bo it further "Resolved, that it is to tho host in terests of tho stato and county that tho contracts should bo mado on tho prosont bids and that tho brldeo con- tracts should not bo ro-ndvortlsed."
