J McNatnara will be of Interest to residents of tho olty as It contains some vital facts re garding tho paving of streets together with estlmntcs on tho differcn pay ment constructions. In conjunction with this letter It must bo borno In mind that the tax payers of North Platto arc required to pay only for the paving of the street Intersections and the remnindcr, com prising over four-fifths of tho expense 1b homo by tho owners of the property abutting on tho paved streets. Theso samo property owners will also pay their apportionment for tho paving of the intersections nnd it will be higher than residence owners will have to pay as their property is assessed high er. Tho following Is Mr,. McNamara's letter: Editor Tribune: I have been asked by a riumber of prominent citizens for in formation regarding the cost of vnr ous kinds of street paving also my opinion as to tho best type for North Platte, should our city decide to pave the business streets. As this subject Is of Interest to every citizen I would like to present it through the columns of your paper. In order to get fairly accurate fig ures ns to the cost, letters were sent to a number of cities in the state ask ing for data on paving and I also made estimates with what Information I had a hand and submit tho following prices of cost per square yard for different pavement construction: Concrete, $1,50 per squaro yard. Asphalt, $1.85 per square yard. Brick, $2.30 per square yard. Wood Block, $2,80 per square yard Tho abovo figures should only be taken as preliminary estimates for there are several Indefinite quantities considered whicli cannot be deter mined until tho details of the typo of pavement decided upon arc noched out nnd a survey made of the street, In caso of brick pavement for In stance, it will bo necessary to know how much excavation Is required, depth of concreto base, kind of brick and filler to be used. For the business Btreets I am very much in favor of brick pavement on concreto base using asphalt or cement' grout ns a filler. Where brick Is used1 'it is an easy matter to repair and; when the pavement is taken up for' water mains, gas mains or conduits the brick can be ro-lald with almost their original surface by ordinary la bor. This typo of pavement gives good service nnu while the first cost ex ceeds that of concrete or asphalt It will last longer and is les8 expensive x.i. iu maintain. On Dowey or Locust street brldk paving will cost the abutting property owner $G.90 per lineal foot or $152 for twnety-two foot frontage. Street In terseclons will cost $1460 based on any estimate of $2.30 per square yard. This Is a good year for paving as work is scarce and contractors tire bidding close, tho city would also get a large number of bids,. C. J. McNAMARA, City Engineer. Glee Club Pleases Onialiii.
