for tho murder of Vernon Connett. Ills
trial is. sot In tho district court for
January 26th, Tuesday of next weekf
Roberts was brought hero In tho
night and overy precaution was taken
to keep tho news away. A demonstra
tion of feeling was fared by tlio pf
flccrs and for this reason tho news
of his nrrivnl was kept a secret with
in tho sheriff's ofllce. He was brought
horo handcuffed that ho might bo
given no chanco for escape as tha
officers realize that ho Is only wait
ing opportunity to attempt a getaway.
Ho seemingly realizes that ho is a
doomed man and his spirit, which was
so evident provious to his confession.
Is broken.
Roberts 1b being kept in a lone cell
in tho Jail so that no one will be given
opportunity to bco him. His trial will
open Tuesday but It will take prob
ably several days to get a Jury and tho
trial will take up tho greater part of

When called upon by a reporter
yosterday afternoon Roberts refused
to discuss tho case against him. Ho
sits in his cell alone and has llttlo
to say ovon to tho other prisoners who
can get within speaking distance of
him. Ho has engaged Attorney Jas.
T. Keefo of this city for legal advice
and seemingly Intends keeping silent
until tho trial comes off.
Charles Clayton is also being held
at tho Jail. Ho is merely awaiting tho
trial of RobertB at which ho will bo
one of tho chief witnesses. No charges
havo been filed against him and none
will be filed, presumably, until after
tho trial of Roberts, unless ho shoulq
get restless and attempt to get out.
