L CITY AM) COUNTY NEWS A. E. Crosby, of Sutherland, was visiting in this city Tuesday evening to attend the meeting of the Masonic lodge. Charles Hendy of Denver, arrived in the city tho first of tho week for a visit of several days with relatives resident of this city. Tho Triangle club, a newly or ganized club of young ladies, was de lightfully entertained Tuesday even ing by Miss Mildred McKtown at her home on South Locust street. Prof. E H. Flowers was able to bo on duty again at the high school building Wednesday after having been off for a short time on account of tonsilltis. Misses Ethel Dean and Harriet Johnson left Wednesday evening for 'Ogden, Utah whero they will spend two weeks visiting relatives and friends. Mrs. Etta Harrison left tho first of the week for Omaha for an extended visit with relatives and friends. She had been staying in this city with her daughter Mrs. Wilson Tout. A number of tho members of the Masonic lodgo who reside in Suther land and vicinity have made applica tion for a charter to have a lodge of their own In that city. The matter will be taken up with tho grand lodgo and decided. Mrs. A. L. Burr returned to her new homo In Omaha after visiting In the city for several days at the homes of Mr. and Mrs. Glenn Miller, Mr. and Mrs. Frater and other friends. Dr. Barr loft for that place earlier In the week. He Is connected with the St. Joseph's hospital in Omaha. Mrs. Lee Hite, of Gerlng, Nebr., ar rived in tho city the fore part of tho week for a visit of several days with lier parents, Mr. and Mrs. Gus Diener. Supt. Frank Smith, of the Suther land schools was In tho city Tuesday evening to attend tho meeting of the Masonic lodge. W. H. Cramer left Wednesday for Seward where he Is working on some heavy construction work. Ho Bpent several weeks during tho holiday sea son visiting in this city with his fam ily. Tho weather was so severe In Soward that he had to stop work for some time but It Is now pleasant again. Motor-Driven Ico Bont. U. W. Vroman of this city has re cently completed an Ice boat which Is motor-driven, being hitched to n motorcycle with lugs on tho rear wheel. Tho boat was taken out ysc terday afternoon for tho first try-out and did some fine work although there are a few Improvement that he will add. The boat Is made on tho same order as the sail boats. Tho four runners are shod with pieces of angle iron and a stearlng gear similar to an au tomobile steering gear governs the two front runners and guides the boat. Tho motorcycle Is attached In tho middle of the boat and the rear wheel Is shod with bolts which form sharp lugs. The front wheel of the motorcycle Is taken off so that the boat will steer better. Tho speed of tho boat Is regulated by wires running from tho throttlo to tho helmsman's seat. Tho boat will carry more per sons than a sail boat and will also take them faster. It needs no wind to run it and there is no trouble with having to tack to go either way of the river. Twentieth Century Club Meets. At the meeting of thq Twenleth Century club Tuesday evening at the library building several matters of civic interest wero discused. The main featurei of tlio meeting was an address given by MayorE. H. Evans on different civic matters. A good at tendance and an interesting meeting wero reported. Mayor Evans spoke upon many dif ferent matters of civic interest includ ing the trials of city administration and economic questions. He brought up the matter of street and park light ing, garbage and dumping grounds, city waterworks, water meters and several other matters. His address was comprehensive In every respect and brought out somo points for that or ganization to work on. Word was received hero this week from Cordlco Ruby, formerly a stu dent nurso In tho Good Samaritan hospital, telling that alio had entered training in a hospital in Kearney. Mr, Rosencrantz, of Cozad, arrived in tho city this weok to visit for a few days with his daughter, Mrs. I. A. Gilbert und family. Tho basketball enthusiasts ot tho high school havo dropped tho Idea of doveloplng a team this year and so far as is known activities in this lino will now bo dropped until tho high school has a gymnasium. Thoy had hoped to get tho use of tho Lloyd opora house, but slnco tho skating rink went In they cannot uso it even ings for games and practice would bo to no avail. Basketball is a sport much needed in tho schools. It fills tho gap bo tween fall and spring nthlctlc cxer- clso for both tho boys and tho girls of the school. It is agamo that com mands nearly as much interest as (football and) many of tho smaller schools in this part of tho stnto havo good teams. Anothor ndvantngo of basketball is tho practlco it gives tho football players In catching an Inflated ball in their hands. Somo of tho teams that met tho North Plntto eleven this season wero better on open plays and forward passes for tho reason that they had had moro practice in catch ing tho ball and wero thus moro suro of It. Tho gamo also holds tho intorcst of tho public as well as tho pupils In tho school nnd school work much moro than any other kind of winter entertainment. Tho need of a good gymnasium in tho local schools Is folt moro each year and It will undoubtedly bo only a matter of time until this is added to tho cqulppment. Will Clean up City. Mrs. A. L. Fletcher was given hear ing Wednesday afternoon before Po- lico Maglstrato Mlltonbcrger on the charge of running a disorderly house. Nick Legas, her son-in-law, was chlof witness for tho defense. After tak ing tho testimony tho court gave tho woman freedom on her promise to leave the city at once. lie imposed no flno ns it would only necessitate putting her In jail and Mr. Mlltonber- ger deemed it better to transport her. He states that tho city will now bo thoroughly cleaned of such hell-holes and he Is proceeding to carry it out.
