The streets were lined with tho high walls ' and closed windows of convent after convent, and huge clusters of monas teries' were on the hills about the town many very newly built and modern and the town was seething with black-robed priests and brown bare footed monks and coped nuns. This was .the great Roman Catholic center, where some of the monastic ordors have their chief establishments. Lovers oft ru:,b in where husbands fcp Yvl3k iHSlet Sffi2 Fun for the Baby, but If the tops of your trees arc nipped by excessive cold tills winter do not chop down the trees at first sight. Walt until the leaves start, prune off all dead wood and cultivate the ground thoroughly. This will put new life in to your trees. Some people seem to think that in order to spray their orchards they must have a big two-horse outfit and pay out a lot of money to start. Noth ing of the kind! An orchard of 100 trees can quickly be sprayed by a bar rel sprayer set on a stone sled, drawn by a single horse. Scraping out the dead wood and fill ing the cavity with cement will be tho means of saving valuable apple trees that otherwise would be destroyed by rot. We cannot paint peaches a nice lus cious color without a liberal use of potash. Plow the peach orchard In tho spring and keep down the weeds and grasses until August, then sow rye or PROTECT THE FRUIT TREES FROM INJURY Stovepipe, Slit Lengthwise, Keep Away Injurious Little Rabbits and Mice. Rabbits do many hundred dollars' of damage to orchardlsts, nurserymen and gardeners every year. In view of the damage they do it would seem bet ter to offera bounty for their destruc tion than to Impose a fine for so doing. In winter where they are very numer ous they kill many young trees every year. Older trees of eight inches in diameter and upwards are seldom dis turbed unless the rabbits aro closely pressed for food. A good way to protect young fruit trees from injury by these pests is to procure sections of stovepipe, silt them lengthwise and pass them around the body of tho tree. Secure tho plpo to Us natural shape by means of a strong string tied about it, and press the low er end an inch or two into the soli. This method is very effective, but might lie found slightly expensive to the large orchardlst who has several hundred trees to protect. To tho farm er with only a dozen or two trees to give protection It is a cheap and con venient method of keeping tho rabbit away. Remember that mice do almost as much damage per year as rabbits and if the Blit in the pipe be close fitted after it is put around tho tree, and tho plpo pressed well into tho soil, it will be just as Impossible for mice to get to the tree as rabbits. Keep the orchard free of hollow logs, tree tops, tall weeds or grass, rail or tile piles or any other places where rabbits aro apt to frequent, and get every ono on the table you can. REMOVAL OF OLD STUMPS IS MADE EASY The Modern Stump Puller. Elevated sites are desirable for peach orchards, some of tho oldest peach trees aro on the tops of hills. Tho application of too much fresh barnyard manuro stimulates an un healthy growth of wood and leads to tho winter killing of many of the peach-buds. A few mulberry trees set out around tho fruit orchard will divert the at tention of tho birds and afford a wind break for the fruit trees. Poultry and plum growing make a nice combination for the small farmer who wishes to make use of his poultry yards. The human eye Is the great fruit buyer and wo must put our fruit up in neat, attractive packages if we care to obtain tho best prices on the market. The honest fruit grower who puts up good fruit and gives honest sized packages does not need to look up trade. It will como to him. ERADICATING PESTS DURING THE WINTER Little Extra Work During Cold Weather Season Will Save Trees From Codling Moth. During fall and winter, when the trees are bare, is a good time to rid all trees of the cocoons or nests of nu merous insects. They are thon easily discernible and may be removed from tho branches or trunks o" trees with little trouble. A little extra work dur ing the winter will savo many trees from destruction by tho codling moth. It Is the larvae or young of this insect that aro responsible for our wormy ap ples. Even tho work of removing tho cocoons will not sulllce, but it will help. Tho spring treatment is to spray with an arsenical poison, paris green or arsenato of lead, Immediately after the petals fall, using three pounds of arsenato of lead to 50 gal lons of bordeaux mixture or of water. If paris green is used it should be at tho rato of from six to eight ounces to each no gallons of spray. This spray ing should bo repeated in about ten days. Where tho second brood of codling moth causes damage, a fur ther spraying should be given, in lati tudes about parallel with northern In diana In the latter part of July, and in latitudes liko southern Indiana about two weeks eailier. Tho first codling moth spraying given-just after tho petals fall, should be as thorough as it can possibly bo made. Try to get some of the poison In tho open calyx throat of eery blossom on tho tree. How Uncle Sam Sets Drinking Water Standard NOW that Uncle Sam, through the United States public health service, hat set a standard of purity for all drinking water furnished on common car tiers entering into interstate traffic, many Inquiries have begun to pour Into Surgeon General Ituport Blue's olllco about the manner nnd method used by the government's chemists and physicians in setting this new water btandard. Just how this standard Is reached was described in nontechnical nnd understandable English by nn olilcer of the public health service, as follows: About fifteen drops of water are taken from the Samplo in tho labora tory, and this small quantity of water. is spread upon the burfucu of a thin film of agar, a sort of gelatin, poured into a fiat glass dish, after tho dish and all Instruments used, including the ugnr, have been thoroughly sterilized to kill such germs as aro ordinarily present. This dish of gelatin, or culture media, as it is termed, containing the wntfcr, is placed in an Incubator and kept at a temperature of 98.0 degree? Fahrenheit for 21 hours. After this period has elapsed, the plate Is taken out and very small spots nro noticed dotted over its surface. Each one of these spots represents n colony of germs which has developed; each colony from a separate germ con tnlued in tho original sample of water. The colonies aro counted by means of a disk ruled into squares, which fits under the thin glass dish. If the number of colonies found In the amount of water planted on tho ngar (in drops) exceeds ono hundred, tho water Is to be rejected as unsatisfactory Any count loss than 100 colonies per plate Is considered a safe limit of per missible bacteriological impurity. There are other tests to which the water is subjected, using larger quan tities and different materials as culture media. American Mule Still Holds His Own in Our Army THE American army mule need hnve no fear for his laurels becnuso of the great part gasoline motors have played in transportation problems ol Kuropeau armies in the present war. A few j ears ago it was determined to experiment with motor transporta tlon as a means to iuereaso the radius of field artillery. General Cro.ler, chief of the army ordnance bureau, designed a motor battery wagon, which was tried out in maneuvers. It proved n Hat failure, for It was no heavy that 11 broke through bridges, sunk to tho hubs in soft roads and gonorally ham pored tho battory to which it was attached. Tho exporlment wa3 abandoned and tho ordnance bureau Is now content to await the results of tho experi ments of tho quartermaster's department In solf-propollod army transporta tion units.
