The Second Adam. 11. Hut the text suggests that tho Dlrth of Christ in the soul would bo mposslble had not Christ himself aeon born into tho world. Our nat jral man could have ro existence rvithout a natural progenitor, and thin is equally clear of our spiritual or egenerated man. Why Is Christ :alled in Scripture the second Adam, f not that he was, so to speak, a new Uarting point for man, "the pnro spring of a redeemed race"? Thi3 3oe3 not mean merely that he was he purest, noblest and best man who 5ver lived, but that in his humanity io was much more than any other nan from Adam down, in a certain jonso humanity was reborn in tho nanger nt licthlehem. Redemption begins by a new birth in the race tvliich includes all men. at least to '.his degree, that in Christ dwells Dotentlnlly all that all men need, rhero Is now a chance, which but Vr tho incarnation of Christ nover :ould havo been, that each of us may Decome regenerated and begin our ife over again. In caso a woodshed is available, with an old stove that can be used there, theso should be pressed Into servicn for washing during tho wlntoi months. Tho woodshed as a wash room would necessitate a washday which is mild and sunshiny, hut there is usually more than ono such day In each week; and when the health ol the family is at stake, tho wsshlup can well be done on some other dn than Monday At best, tho woodshed would be cold, hence tho worker would need a piece of old carpet or linoleum and warm bricks or n soupstono tc protect her feet wlillo standing at the tubs, A small bench a rollers, made the same height as the wash bench, will enable tho houscwlle to move the lllled tubs about without any lifting Such preparations on the day previous art necessary in order to shorten tho proo esees on washday and hasten the dry ing of clothes, for tho earlier in tbr day that somo of tho clothes can b. put on tho line, the less need there will be for the remainder to He wet in tin house or to be dried there. In caso a shed is too cold for use ir all processos of washing, it should bf used for those which send olf inucl' steam such as running clothes thiougl tho washing machine. Wringer, wnsl bench, boiler, basket and hampei should be kept in this shod rathei than carried from the cellar and back or rather than keep doors open while carrying them from the smokehouse to washroom, as is tometiines done. USING THE SEWING MACHINE One Who Does Much Sewing See That It Is Always Perfect Condition. Shoulc In When much machine work lias bo done, filling the shuttle Is a con stant annoyance. This can be part ly obviated by threading the shuttle with iincr cotton than that used on the needle. The sowing will be quite as strong, and tho shuttlo will nol need refilling half so often as it would if threaded with the same num ber of cotton as tho needle, because tho spool will hold a great deal more of tho finer cotton. If you want your sewing machine to do satisfactory work, remember that it needs to bo kept clean. After every ten hours' work it needs oil, but all surplus oil must be carefully wiped off afterwards. Always work it steadily, and nover start or stor. with a jerk. Ono dressmaker, whose machines aro noted amongst her sowing girla for their smooth nnd easy running oils them onco in every tliroo times with paraffin instead of tho usual oil Of courso she is careful that the inn chines are kept scrupulously clean. A dirty machine can't bo expected to da good work. When your machine is not In use tee that tho wheels are left so that tho oil holes aro at tho top of the hub. This will savo clearing awa the superlluous oil, which trickles out and causes tho hub to catch the dust. Uoforo you begin to sow take an odd pleco of mnterlal and stitch back wards and forwards beforo commenc ing ordinary work. If any oil works up with tho needle, as so frequently happens after oiling or cleaning. It will not spoil your material. Treat a machine as a delicate in Htrumont, nnd keep it away Troin draughts and damp. To Cook Cabbane in Half an Hour. Havo plenty of salted boiling water in which a teaspoonfui of soda lias been dissolved. Plunge tho cabbage in, top downwnrd; leavo it uncovered and let it boll until tender That will be from twenty minutes to hair an hour. Tnko it out into a colander, drain well, put into a hot dish; add lots of butter, somo salt and pepper and servo at once. It will bo as leli coto as cauliflower and the color br retained, ns well as no unpleasant odor over the liouso such as is ulwavs associated with boiling cabbage. Trv It onco. Underdone Meat. If a joint of meat should bo too un dordono to oat, and sovoral slices have been carved out, it can bo conked aRain and served up ns a fresh Joint if tho liolo 1b filled up with mnHhed potatoes and cooktl In n brisk oven for an hour. Tho brow nod potatoes will be much appreciated and tho fact that It is tho second timo of sending it to tablo will not bo noticed. Browned Flour for Gravy. Koop u quantity of brownod flour on hand for making gravy; you will tir.d It savoB a great deal of tlmo. Put sovoral spoonfuls ovenly on tho bot tom of a baking pan and stir It over a moderato flro until it becomes an ambor brown. Turn It Into a bottlo and keep for use. Dran Gems. I WRCIIARD COVER CROPS FOR MULCHING One of the Best Means of Protecting Roots of Apple and Cherry Trees Kcopo the Soil Molnt. Tho relation of soil moisture and soil covor to root killing of apples and cheiry stocks has been studied at tho experiment statlonu. Tlio results showed that n straw mulch, or a cover crop that mats down like iv straw mulch, tonds to prevent freezing nnd alternate freezing and thawing, nnd thus reduces injuries to tho roots. Any method of culturo I hut leaves the ground perfectly bare In tho fall. t! us favoring deep freezing nnd iU tomato freozlng and tliRwing, is not to bo recommended whore root killing Is at all common. A cover crop is one of the best means for protecting Un roots ot f-eos. Likewise, any means of culture that leaves tho ground moist in fall has un advantage oer methods that leavo the ground very dry In this regard, clean cultivation might bo expected to bo ahead of coor crops. Tho best all-around method of culturo for young orchards Is thor ough cultivation in early Hummer, lol lowod by a cover crop in tho fall, so far as tests covering only a few jenr"" cm prove any method best. A mulch of straw is known to keep the soil moist during tho summer, and it also protects tender roots in winter, hut its uso will suiely increase winter Injury to tender tops of trees by prolonging fall growth. Resides n mulch lndiu-es a shallow root development, which may result disastrously in later years, and its use is out of ttic question in largo orchards. Thorough cultivation protects trees ngalnst drought as well as mulching, and keeps tho roots Irom forming near the surface of tho ground. When cul tivation is given in early summer, all that is necessary to furnish winter pro tection is to stop cultivating in mid summer, grow ti cover crop (weeds bo ing better than nothing), which will diy tho ground in fall, causing tho new wood growtli to ripen early in prep aration for winter, and which will, by holding the snow out by matting down to lorm a mulch, protect toudcr roots during winter. Good cultivation in early summer can often bo given nung tiecs b growing some culti vated crop in tho orchard. FALL SPRAYING IS FAVORED When Possible Select Warm Day for Operation, as Insects Then Crawl Out for Sunlight. After all rotten apples, pruned, limbs and other refuse havo been cleared up about tho orchard tho trees should bo given a thorough spraying. If possible, one should chooso a warm day for tho operation, so most of tho insect pests crawling out to lifo in the sunlight will be exposed to tho ucliou of tho spraying solution. Special attention should be given old knots and rough ami rotten spots about tho tiees, as in these places tho fruit pests deposit their eggs for next season's crop and at the same tlmo many of theso pests themselves aro harboring in safe retreat till winter is over. There aro -tioveiul reasons for this fall spraying. It not only destroys tho insect pests, but thoir eggs, also, which have been laid. After tho spraying, tho trees will bo left healthy and clean and tree from 'tho petals wlillo they aro dovoloplng their next season's fruit crop. Another light spraying next spring will not coiuo amiss, but tills fall spraying will insuro tho work being dono not neg lected next spring, when the rush sea son is on and the Held turns tho farm er's attention from tho orchard. 4 ooooo HORTICULTURAL NOTES t Do not cut out largo limbs Paint over tho larger wounds t Keep tho tree frco of suckers.
