TUESDAY SEPT. 29, 1914, The week following Roosevelt's visit to Lincoln does not develop nny hole In tho Nebraska political sea. Evi dently tlio republicans of Nebraska liavo arrived at the wlso conclusion that feeding the democratic party through factional differences Is a fool ish proqduro. Editor Fumes, of tho Maxwell Tele post, in tho last issue of his paper, denies the persistent rumors that he has withdrawn as an npplicant for tho reglstorship of tin North Platte land olllco. Tho parties responsible for theso rumors are probably those who do not look with favor upon Mr. Eamos' .candidacy. Evon If success of woman's sulfrage In Nebraska docs result in denying to us the privilege of buying a glass of beor whon wo are thirsty, wo feel con strained to cast a vote favorable to giving tho girls a right to voto. In tho present engagement between the Germans nnd tho allies the number of men Is placed at 3,000,000. If tho Gettysburg douth rato prevailed, tho number killed would be colossal. But evidently the death rato Is much less; tho fighting Is principally at long range whllo nt Gettysburg It was almost a hand-to-hnnd engagement. Candidates say it Is almost Impos sible to got the voters interested in politics; In fact if tho subject is not broached by the candidate tho avorago votor remains mum. Twenty years ago when oven a county campaign was on you could count n score of men argu ing politics on tho street corners any hour of tho day and any day of tho week. Now you can stand on tho streets for a straight hour and not hear a man mako a political chirp. Our young friend Ilrownllcld can hardly afford to waste much time on a wild goose chaso for tho olllco of sher iff. With a less formidable opponent than Art Salisbury Mr. Brownlleld might havo a fighting chanco, but with Salisbury in the best of trim, tho out como of tho race has already been marked up. Tho real purposo of put ting up ' Mr. Brnwnllold, as well as Whito for trensuror and Larson for clerk, was to maintain tho democratic organization in the county rather than tho hop,o of success. Whllo at Brady last week a demo crat of that village whispered in our ear that Colonel Bcatty is no longer tho democratic controller In tho east part of tho county. This was cprtnlnly some news, as wo wcro of tho opinion that thoro was no ono In Lincoln coun ty tiulto big enough to dispossess tho Colonol of hlB tltlo of "WIio'b Who" and in fact wo are a llttlo skeptical as to whether tho Colonel has roally been dispossessed. Tho filibustering tactics of tho re publicans In tho United States senato resulted in decreasing tho river nnd harbor appropriation bill in the sum of thirty-three million dollars. Porhaps If those same republican senators will do a little more filibustering it will not bo necessary to levy the "war tax" in order to keep tho government alloat financially. When you think about It, a "war tax" at a timo when tho country is at peace, is a peculiar proceeding; It almost looks as though tho democratic party was deficient In ability to properly manage tho affairs of state. If thoro Is any decidod opposition to tho ro-olectlon of Commissioner Sprlngor it is slow in developing. As a matter of fact tho people of Lincoln county regard Mr. Springer ns a mighty good commissioner; a careful, conscientious mombor of tho board. Ho has dovoloped Into "a watchdog of tho treasury," inasmuch that ho de mands that tho county shall rcolvo a fair and honost measure of labor or material for tho'inonoy 1t-pys nut. If bills are cxhorliitant they must be corrected before allowed, If work Is not up to tho standard he wants to know why. The Inclination on tho part of some to "stick it to the county," is oxtromely unpopular with Mr. Spring er. Whan the olty council decrood that Ayater consumers bo placed on tho mo tor system and pay for the water thoy used, about half of the propurty own i'W sent up a most pitiful wall and predicted all kinds of dire results lawns would bo neglected, gardens discontinued and the water cost would bo so high that tho people wouldn't havo enough money loft to buy bread. llavo tho predictions como true? Well we hare noticed that lawns have look ed as protty as ever, wo have never soen morp productive gnrdons, and aa to the cost of service,-compare our meter bills of the past six mouths with the flat rato you had boen paying how much grontor tho cost? To give the most efficient service, the construction, equipment and operation of this Company must conform to the best known practices. To meet these requirements, the Company must charge such rates as-will meet necessary operating expenses, provide adequate reserves for replacing worn-out or obsolete plant, and give a return on the money actually invented in the business that shall be reasonable and sufficient to invite new capital as required for expansion.
